:00:11. > :00:13.59 years in jail for eight members of a drug gang

:00:14. > :00:15.which tried to flood the South West with cocaine and amphetamines.

:00:16. > :00:22.The men and women worked as part of a major supply chain disrupted

:00:23. > :00:26.We'll report on the jail sentences handed down.

:00:27. > :00:29.Also tonight ` on alert ` protesters begin patrolling the countryside at

:00:30. > :00:33.There's no word yet on marksmen beginning

:00:34. > :00:36.their work aimed at preventing TB in cattle ` we'll hear the lengths

:00:37. > :00:39.some campaigners are prepared to go to in order to disrupt the cull.

:00:40. > :00:45.Controversial changes to our coastguard system start to take

:00:46. > :00:54.And the rare Dartmoor discovery that casts light

:00:55. > :01:01.Eight men have been jailed for a total of more than 59 years for a

:01:02. > :01:04.drug smuggling operation across the South West using Jaffa Cake boxes to

:01:05. > :01:09.The gang of 17 men and women took delivery of the drugs

:01:10. > :01:14.from London and diluted them ready for sale in the West Country.

:01:15. > :01:18.The police investigation ` codenamed Operation Rosco `

:01:19. > :01:20.included surveillance in London, Liverpool, Devon and Cornwall.

:01:21. > :01:29.John Henderson was in Plymouth Crown Court for the sentencing.

:01:30. > :01:40.The moment police pounce. A covert investigation into the supply of

:01:41. > :01:45.cocaine and amphetamines into Devon and Cornwall. It but a lot of

:01:46. > :01:55.heartache and damage to the communities. Cocaine is an addictive

:01:56. > :01:59.drug and causes crime and it can result in violence. It could have

:02:00. > :02:03.caused a lot of damage in the counties. The drugs were coming from

:02:04. > :02:09.London and the south`east by car. Sometimes even by train. Cocaine

:02:10. > :02:13.arrived in places where it was dilutive and bulked up to be sold on

:02:14. > :02:19.the streets of Cornwall and Plymouth. Today these men were sent

:02:20. > :02:23.to prison for their part in the conspiracy that was large`scale and

:02:24. > :02:28.lucrative. Police used on supermarket carrier bag containing

:02:29. > :02:32.blocks of cocaine with a street value of ?45,000. And a packet of

:02:33. > :02:39.oatcakes and a packet of oatcakes and Jaffa cakes. They did not find

:02:40. > :02:44.snacks but drugs money. When the smuggling of the careers turned to

:02:45. > :02:46.amphetamines. A camper van was searched in Plymouth carried 25

:02:47. > :02:50.kilos of the drug with a street value of a quarter of a quarter of

:02:51. > :02:54.?1 million. The driver was jailed for three years and four months. The

:02:55. > :02:59.lookout was jailed for four years and nine months. Amphetamines were

:03:00. > :03:04.now coming from Liverpool. This car was stopped on the M5 on its way to

:03:05. > :03:09.the south`west and found to have ten kilos of the drug. Another carp was

:03:10. > :03:14.stopped with two kilos. Police suspect that this man as the

:03:15. > :03:19.ringleader. Today he was jailed. At 18 years, his was the longest

:03:20. > :03:25.sentence. The judge described him as a professional criminal making money

:03:26. > :03:30.out of crime. Two men were given suspended sentences and walked free.

:03:31. > :03:33.The coastguard in much of Devon and Cornwall and Brixham has been

:03:34. > :03:38.But all that is about to change as a major overhaul

:03:39. > :03:42.At its heart is a new centre coordinating search

:03:43. > :03:47.It's based in Hampshire and opened its doors today.

:03:48. > :03:49.Work currently done by the station at Portland will

:03:50. > :03:53.transfer there next week with Brixham shutting in November.

:03:54. > :03:56.Falmouth stays open ` joining the new national network next month.

:03:57. > :04:01.Alison Johns reports on a highly controversial move

:04:02. > :04:08.Dave is a fisherman who has been working out

:04:09. > :04:15.He likens the new National Maritime Operations Centre in Hampshire to a

:04:16. > :04:20.call centre and is worried about the loss of the local team in Brixton.

:04:21. > :04:23.You just get the feeling that when something is going on locally,

:04:24. > :04:29.I also was airlifted off with a suspected heart attack

:04:30. > :04:34.a couple of years back and you just feel more confident when you think

:04:35. > :04:39.that it is Brixton, they are within 30 or 40 or 50 miles of you.

:04:40. > :04:41.Just up the coast, Dave's worries are shared by

:04:42. > :04:48.I think a major concern is really when you

:04:49. > :04:51.are in the business of saving lives at sea, every second counts really.

:04:52. > :04:54.We feel down here certainly that any extension of that response

:04:55. > :05:06.time is going to put ultimately people's lives in further danger.

:05:07. > :05:10.We have yet to see any evidence actually that they can still fulfil

:05:11. > :05:11.their role really and keep response times down.

:05:12. > :05:14.The MCA says there has been an extensive tensting programme

:05:15. > :05:17.Live exercises have been carried out with lifeboats

:05:18. > :05:19.and coastguard rescue teams which it says were very successful.

:05:20. > :05:22.The end user will see no difference at all so whether you're

:05:23. > :05:25.in the water or walking along the coast there should be no change in

:05:26. > :05:37.What this will allow us to do is maintain all the other services that

:05:38. > :05:39.we required to such as vessel traffic monitoring around the UK,

:05:40. > :05:47.The UK Maritime safety information broadcast while still delivering

:05:48. > :05:50.In two months and the National Maritime Operation Centre

:05:51. > :05:53.takes over from the coastguard team here in Brixton.

:05:54. > :05:55.The MCA say the modernisation will lead to a more effective

:05:56. > :06:00.But many sea users here in the South West fear that the loss of local

:06:01. > :06:08.Protesters have been on patrol overnight gearing up for

:06:09. > :06:11.the start of the new badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire .

:06:12. > :06:13.Some say they're prepared to break the law

:06:14. > :06:19.But farmers say the cull is needed to control

:06:20. > :06:29.As the sun went down over the cull zone, the protesters came

:06:30. > :06:32.out amid rumours that the shooting was about to start.

:06:33. > :06:34.The people who are doing in these actions,

:06:35. > :06:37.the shooters and responsible shooters, if we are in the vicinity

:06:38. > :06:46.If we are in the facility that means badgers won't be killed.

:06:47. > :06:49.And so they walked ` about 80 opponents of the cull,

:06:50. > :06:52.mostly local, some who clearly did not want to be identified.

:06:53. > :06:55.The protesters say we are now on the edge of the cull zone.

:06:56. > :07:05.We do not know, they don't know if the cull is going to start

:07:06. > :07:08.tonight, and if it doesn't then they will back tomorrow the night

:07:09. > :07:18.But they say this proves they have the numbers to cause problems

:07:19. > :07:22.for the cull marksmen whenever they get underway.

:07:23. > :07:27.20 miles away in another corner of the cull zone, another group of

:07:28. > :07:32.People here have come from all over the country.

:07:33. > :07:37.Some say they are prepared to break the law if necessary to protect

:07:38. > :07:42.Potentially they get chopped up or jumped on.

:07:43. > :07:56.I would say it makes my heart sink to hear the cages are

:07:57. > :07:59.But those who protest will find little sympathy from farmers whose

:08:00. > :08:02.livelihoods have been ruined by the scourge of TB in cattle.

:08:03. > :08:05.We've got to do something about it and it is not desirable

:08:06. > :08:08.that a disease that is so bad for animals, whether they be

:08:09. > :08:10.wildlife or cattle, is allowed to run rampant in the countryside.

:08:11. > :08:13.The arguments over whether or not badgers are to blame

:08:14. > :08:16.The two sides as far apart as they ever were.

:08:17. > :08:18.And what is different though is the technology

:08:19. > :08:23.Night vision lenses and thermal imaging cameras

:08:24. > :08:34.which they say will help them track the marksman more easily.

:08:35. > :08:36.Two detectives are having their work monitored

:08:37. > :08:39.and a call handler has been disciplined after a case in which

:08:40. > :09:07.The commission said the call was handled poorly. Detectives were

:09:08. > :09:11.criticised for failing to find his former girlfriend.

:09:12. > :09:13.The Territorial Army Reserve Centre in Truro,

:09:14. > :09:16.which was due to be re`located to Devon will now stay open.

:09:17. > :09:19.The MOD says D company 6th battalion "the Rifles" headquarters will move

:09:20. > :09:21.to Plymouth but the Truro base will remain open

:09:22. > :09:25.The move follows a petition which called on

:09:26. > :09:28.the MOD to retain traditional links between the county and the Army.

:09:29. > :09:32.The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry was the county's regiment.

:09:33. > :09:36.Obviously we've gone through the antecedent

:09:37. > :09:39.and the Rifles that have now become the county regiment of Cornwall.

:09:40. > :09:41.So the historic link ` the golden thread `

:09:42. > :09:45.remains and it is important that we keep troops here in the county.

:09:46. > :09:48.They will mentor our cadets and it will give us a focus

:09:49. > :09:53.in the county for the Ministry of Defence and the Army in particular.

:09:54. > :09:55.Scores of young footballers in Exeter were devastated

:09:56. > :09:58.after the start of the football season was disrupted when gypsies

:09:59. > :10:04.Several football fixtures had to be cancelled after

:10:05. > :10:06.around 20 caravans and vehicles forced entry onto the pitches

:10:07. > :10:12.Today, Exeter City Council began taking legal action

:10:13. > :10:16.The gypsies say they're simply living their traditional way

:10:17. > :10:26.Our Community affairs correspondent Carys Edwards reports.

:10:27. > :10:35.Legal action may be underway to remove the gypsies. For now they are

:10:36. > :10:38.going nowhere. More than 20 caravans and vehicles remained on the site

:10:39. > :10:41.along with horses. They are parked along the edges of the football

:10:42. > :10:45.pitch but all pictures over the weekend had to be cancelled on the

:10:46. > :10:50.advice of police. More than 200 players were affected including boys

:10:51. > :10:53.and girls from the Exeter youth league. A number of them were

:10:54. > :10:59.devastated. The teams have been working hard in preseason and they

:11:00. > :11:03.were really looking forward to the season. Locals were also concerned.

:11:04. > :11:06.I have got nothing against travellers and actually I think it

:11:07. > :11:09.is quite a nice lifestyle but maybe they could have showed a bit more

:11:10. > :11:16.consideration for the football matches. Terrible. Terrible. I do

:11:17. > :11:20.not play myself but if I did I would be annoyed. They arrived in convoy

:11:21. > :11:24.and broke into the park to these emergency gates. As you can see they

:11:25. > :11:29.have sliced off the end of the emergency aria to gain entry. The

:11:30. > :11:32.gypsies did not want to be interviewed on camera but told me

:11:33. > :11:35.they are simply trying to lead their traditional way of life as they have

:11:36. > :11:40.done for thousands of years. They say they are doing no harm, will

:11:41. > :11:44.keep the site tidy and will respect local people. They said they had no

:11:45. > :11:54.idea about the plans for local football. We would have let the kids

:11:55. > :11:58.watch. We couldn't stop a football match. We would have liked to have

:11:59. > :12:01.seen it. Today the council began legal proceedings to evict the

:12:02. > :12:06.gypsies but it will take time to get a possession order from the County

:12:07. > :12:10.Court. If they refuse to go we will have to do in the procedure but I am

:12:11. > :12:15.sure these people will see sense. We have been told that they are just

:12:16. > :12:19.going to stay there for a few days and then they will move on. So the

:12:20. > :12:24.gypsies will eventually move. Travelling as they have always done.

:12:25. > :12:27.For now the football pitch lies empty and dog walkers are key ring

:12:28. > :12:33.`` keeping their dogs on a lead. Vandals have set fire to a pair

:12:34. > :12:36.of huge straw figures The straw man and

:12:37. > :12:40.his dog were advertising the annual Crantock Bale Push which has raised

:12:41. > :12:42.thousands of pounds for charities. The arson attack on Saturday night

:12:43. > :12:45.came a day after vandals had The Bale Push will take place

:12:46. > :12:49.on Friday evening. Thousands of people turned out to

:12:50. > :12:52.a packed Dorset County Show over Organisers were pleased with

:12:53. > :12:57.the size of the crowds. More than 2000 animals

:12:58. > :13:01.were shown and there were 90 food stands demonstrating

:13:02. > :13:15.delicacies produced in the county. A fur pelt found

:13:16. > :13:17.in an ancient burial chamber on Dartmoor has led experts to believe

:13:18. > :13:20.that bears once lived on the moor. It's thought the bronze age grave or

:13:21. > :13:23.cist was possibly Archaeologists say the find is one

:13:24. > :13:27.of a kind as Jemma Woodman reports. Well, who would have thought that

:13:28. > :13:30.nearly 4000 years ago bears may well have roamed this wild

:13:31. > :13:32.and rugged landscape. And we were always told that

:13:33. > :13:34.the Beast Joining me is Jane from the

:13:35. > :13:40.Dartmoor National Park. Nicely framed under

:13:41. > :13:44.this lovely tree. Tell me, could bears really

:13:45. > :13:49.have roamed Dartmoor? We know that there were bears

:13:50. > :13:53.around in England as a whole So until about 400AD there were

:13:54. > :13:59.still bears present in the country. Everything to do with

:14:00. > :14:07.the cist has been a first actually. I don't think that there is any

:14:08. > :14:12.other finding of a pelt from this period 4000 years ago within

:14:13. > :14:15.a burial context in this country. And it was difficult to identify,

:14:16. > :14:17.wasn't it, why was that? To begin with

:14:18. > :14:21.when they actually recovered the pelt we thought it was going to

:14:22. > :14:25.be easy, we could do DNA on it. But unfortunately

:14:26. > :14:28.because the pelt was in peat it has destroyed any DNA it once contained

:14:29. > :14:35.so we had to go to an alternative analysis technique and that was

:14:36. > :14:37.looking at proteins within the fur. I don't begin to understand how that

:14:38. > :14:44.worked but it has taken a lot of specialists a lot of time and going

:14:45. > :14:48.through that went through a whole lot of animals that it could have

:14:49. > :14:51.been, ranging from seals and camels. And now they are absolutely

:14:52. > :15:04.definite it is a bear. Why was a bear pelt

:15:05. > :15:07.in this burial chamber? It was actually used to wrap up

:15:08. > :15:09.cremated remains of the person who had been cremated and

:15:10. > :15:13.then placed in their cist and it was There is a suggestion that this was

:15:14. > :15:17.a cloak belonging to this person and was a suitable per thing to wrap

:15:18. > :15:20.up the remains. There are lots of other things,

:15:21. > :15:22.weren't there, Over 200 beads, including

:15:23. > :15:28.amber beads, which obviously In the most beautiful bag in

:15:29. > :15:43.which all the things were placed so we think that this was the person's

:15:44. > :15:47.bag, I am saying her because we are Jane,

:15:48. > :15:50.thank you very much for joining us. You can see and discover more

:15:51. > :15:53.about these grave goods at an exhibition at Plymouth's

:15:54. > :15:55.museum which starts this Saturday. To find out more before then,

:15:56. > :15:58.do join me tonight for Inside Out It's time for the sport now

:15:59. > :16:10.and there was a dream start for Exeter Chiefs

:16:11. > :16:13.in the Premiership this weekend as However as one team

:16:14. > :16:19.in the city celebrated another commiserated ` Exeter City hit

:16:20. > :16:22.the bottom of the football league. To discuss the contrasting fortunes

:16:23. > :16:25.I was joined earlier by Torquay United manager Chris

:16:26. > :16:29.Hargreaves and former professional A great weekend

:16:30. > :16:36.of sport to talk about but we have I just had a small job on in

:16:37. > :16:48.the interim but great to be back. We haven't seen you for

:16:49. > :16:51.so long then all of a sudden you win It is important for us

:16:52. > :16:57.at the moment. A great win for them this weekend

:16:58. > :17:02.as well. A tough place to go,

:17:03. > :17:11.newly promoted Luton. Probably had too much time to think

:17:12. > :17:19.about it, natural instinct would normally take over

:17:20. > :17:22.but the winning goal was sublime. I wouldn't have done this

:17:23. > :17:31.but Dominic did. Brilliant footwork there

:17:32. > :17:36.and a superb finishe. PLayed in the 21s game

:17:37. > :17:41.in the week to get In contrast Exeter City haven't won

:17:42. > :17:47.all season and obviously not No, you can get yourself

:17:48. > :17:53.into a lot of results. It is a difficult position to be

:17:54. > :17:56.in and it is a tough job. Mansfield ` big strong side,

:17:57. > :17:59.quicker to react there and score Mansfield are a big team

:18:00. > :18:03.and they are always looking for Ten games in, a brilliant goal from

:18:04. > :18:18.Matt Grimes one of my old sixteens. Just couldn't quite get back

:18:19. > :18:21.into the game. You are not too worried

:18:22. > :18:24.about them yet? No, you cannot pass judgement

:18:25. > :18:27.at this stage of the season. Let's go on to what must be

:18:28. > :18:30.the result of the weekend. I know, but before I start with this

:18:31. > :18:37.have to explain these trousers. Normally Chris comes out in mint

:18:38. > :18:40.green but he's let down today. I invited you to a fancy dress,

:18:41. > :18:43.you turned up and I didn't. If the coaching team could have

:18:44. > :18:49.described how they wanted their first game to go this would've

:18:50. > :18:51.been it. The new players were getting

:18:52. > :18:53.on the scoresheet. Here is Thomas the Tank Engine

:18:54. > :18:55.with his signature celebration. The youngsters really showed up

:18:56. > :19:05.as well. London were not great but the Chiefs

:19:06. > :19:17.were brilliant. The biggest threat was repetitive

:19:18. > :19:22.strain injury from the hugging. Another youngster, Jack,

:19:23. > :19:24.took this ball and you can see why London have got to be worried,

:19:25. > :19:32.and worried because there were less The youngsters did well and the

:19:33. > :19:37.new players linking in well there. He is going to be playing

:19:38. > :19:39.for Namibia in World Cup and he shows that he's got plenty to

:19:40. > :19:42.offer as well. If you are a Chiefs fan maybe take

:19:43. > :19:50.a picture of that league table. Normally associated

:19:51. > :19:52.with footballers. Unfortunately not all results

:19:53. > :19:59.worked that well for our teams. Albion slipped through a 27`6 defeat

:20:00. > :20:02.at Doncaster and the Pirates were beaten 29`19 by Yorkshire Carnegie.

:20:03. > :20:06.Getting off to a good start is important and unfortunately

:20:07. > :20:08.for those two it didn't happen. Andy, Chris,

:20:09. > :20:16.lovely to see you again, thank you. In League One, Yeovil Town stretched

:20:17. > :20:18.their unbeaten run to four matches Aaron Martin scored twice

:20:19. > :20:24.in the first 25 minutes to put Bradford pulled one back soon

:20:25. > :20:31.after but AJ Leitch`Smith made sure there'd be no comeback with this

:20:32. > :20:39.superb strike to seal the win. Roseland gig club took the title

:20:40. > :20:42.at the Ladies County Championships The Roseland A crew beat

:20:43. > :20:47.the host side into second place with Mounts Bay and Caradon finishing

:20:48. > :20:49.third and fourth. 700 gig rowers from across Cornwall

:20:50. > :20:53.were taking part in the hugely To the detriment of lots

:20:54. > :21:06.of other things. You cannot go out as much

:21:07. > :21:09.as you like, you see family less than you'd like because we are

:21:10. > :21:11.on the water in training. We love it

:21:12. > :21:14.and we're such a tight`knit crew Well picking up as many skills

:21:15. > :21:29.as you can is a start. And from the playing field to

:21:30. > :21:31.the growing field ` that's exactly how a Cornish charity

:21:32. > :21:34.has been helping a group of people with learning difficulties

:21:35. > :21:38.as Hamish Marshall reports. This is a cricket team of people

:21:39. > :21:42.in gardens. Those who work on placement with

:21:43. > :21:45.the college charity of learning It gives them

:21:46. > :21:52.the life experience and helps them Playing sport helps

:21:53. > :21:59.build confidence too. What is your strength in cricket,

:22:00. > :22:05.batting or bowling? It is going to be a good day today,

:22:06. > :22:14.lots of fun and that. And these are the results

:22:15. > :22:16.of people in gardens at work. Produce grown

:22:17. > :22:19.at the hostel is sold fortnightly And the cricket team looks

:22:20. > :22:26.the part too. Ahead of a fundraising match

:22:27. > :22:28.against The Eden Project, The cash was raised by investors

:22:29. > :22:33.putting in small amounts of money. I used crowdfunding

:22:34. > :22:38.and that was really, really useful. It gave us a lot of exposure

:22:39. > :22:41.in the community and also we actually raised above

:22:42. > :22:51.the amount we wanted to so we have On the pitch, Eden bat first in what

:22:52. > :22:56.is a fiercely contested match. They raised ?800 last year and it

:22:57. > :22:59.is hoped they would do so again to It helps me get out of the house,

:23:00. > :23:04.doing something in the community and we grow lettuces, rockets,

:23:05. > :23:15.we grow runner beans and we have The extra funding is allowing people

:23:16. > :23:44.to strengthen both at work and It is really like summer is back.

:23:45. > :23:48.Pretty good for the second week in September. There is more to come as

:23:49. > :23:55.well. High pressure is well and truly in charge. This time last year

:23:56. > :24:01.the weather started to change. For this week ahead, it is dry and find

:24:02. > :24:07.and the warm sunshine continues. The only downside is it will be a little

:24:08. > :24:15.bit at night. No rain in the forecast. Cloud in the satellite

:24:16. > :24:17.picture. A lot of it is hazy. The area of high pressure moves around a

:24:18. > :24:22.little bit over the next few days. This is the middle of the day on

:24:23. > :24:24.Tuesday. It has moved away certainly by the middle of the day on

:24:25. > :24:30.Wednesday and it will bring an easterly breeze as we move into the

:24:31. > :24:34.latter part of the week. Still dry and largely fine and one. Today we

:24:35. > :24:37.have had a build`up of cloud but the most of us the weather has been

:24:38. > :24:42.fine. It is quite hazy. This was earlier today at a beach where there

:24:43. > :24:55.was some lovely weather. Glorious sunshine. They see temperature is 17

:24:56. > :25:09.degrees ``. This fine weather continuing. There is not much for

:25:10. > :25:13.our servers though. `` surfers. Let's follow the progress of what is

:25:14. > :25:17.happening overnight tonight. Some is forming later in the night and maybe

:25:18. > :25:21.some fog patches in the valleys. Most of us clear and dried.

:25:22. > :25:25.Temperatures falling away quite smartly. Last night we had single

:25:26. > :25:30.figures and the same sort of damage to night but perhaps a degree or so

:25:31. > :25:34.nowhere. 6 degrees or 7 degrees at the minimum temperature. And for

:25:35. > :25:37.tomorrow it is a nice day. Ms clearing and a cold start. Sunshine

:25:38. > :25:42.coming out and it will warm things up and by the time we get to the

:25:43. > :25:46.afternoon the sunshine will give us temperatures of 90 degrees or 20

:25:47. > :25:51.degrees. A few places getting warmer than that, possibly 21 degrees or 22

:25:52. > :25:59.degrees. Pretty strong sunshine at this time of year. A dry day here.

:26:00. > :26:02.Just a bit more of a breeze developing. A bit morbid breeze

:26:03. > :26:04.developing by the end of the day and it will bring temperatures down a

:26:05. > :26:26.little bit. Cooler and fresher for the coast and our islands.

:26:27. > :26:33.Disappointing for our surfers. For many of our beaches there is not

:26:34. > :26:36.really a wave to serve. For our coastal waters forecast at the winds

:26:37. > :26:41.are from the East or north`eastern tomorrow. By the time we get into

:26:42. > :26:50.the evening possibly picking up to a force for two five. Here is the

:26:51. > :26:54.forecast for the rest of the week. Most of us pleased with what we see.

:26:55. > :27:09.Whether they is fine and dry. More cloud on Thursday. Generally more

:27:10. > :27:13.wobbly breeze `` more of a breeze. Have a nice evening. Who needs all

:27:14. > :27:21.of this when you have September? Thank you. Join us tonight if you

:27:22. > :27:30.can. We're back tomorrow at 6:30pm.
