:00:21. > :00:25.Meanwhile, one of the guests who took these pictures has been

:00:35. > :00:42.What woke me with the raging sound of fire and the sound of sm`shing
:00:43. > :00:45.glass. I could see our window was full of orange flames.

:01:30. > :01:35.Today, the owners of the hotel said they have every intention
:01:36. > :01:39.of rebuilding it with sympathy to its heritage and making ht
:01:40. > :01:43.once again a building Exeter can be proud of.
:01:44. > :01:46.The fire started in the early hours of Friday morning.
:01:47. > :01:49.Destroying an art gallery ndxt to the Royal Clarence,
:01:50. > :01:53.it then spread to the hotel and took firefighters most of the wedkend
:01:54. > :01:58.There are now questions over how the fire was able to cause
:01:59. > :02:06.We have a series of reports and reaction tonight.
:02:07. > :02:11.First, Simon Hall with a round-up today's developmdnts
:02:12. > :02:14.Today began the first week in 250 years without
:02:15. > :02:19.the Royal Clarence Hotel st`nding proud in the heart of Exeter.
:02:20. > :02:23.Plans are being drawn up to demolish much of the remains of the building,
:02:24. > :02:27.but for now, the cordons around Cathedral Green and part of the high
:02:28. > :02:33.Obviously we are really aware that businesses are deeply affected
:02:34. > :02:36.by this incident and the public of Exeter, they want to comd back
:02:37. > :02:39.and use the green and so we're going to try and get everything back
:02:40. > :02:44.It is now three days since the fire destroyed hundreds of years
:02:45. > :02:51.Police officers have been c`lled in and around Devon to staff
:02:52. > :02:54.the cordons and the constable has thanked the public for their
:02:55. > :03:01.They allowed us to get on with what we had to do,
:03:02. > :03:03.they allowed us that opporttnity to be professional, but if dver
:03:04. > :03:05.the public were professional, they were professional in showing
:03:06. > :03:08.the respect we needed for thme and space and those cordons have
:03:09. > :03:13.There has been the odd incident but funnily enough it's been
:03:14. > :03:15.the public who have often sorted out the people being foolish
:03:16. > :03:17.on the cordons, more than we've had to.
:03:18. > :03:20.They have been remarkable and I would like to thank them
:03:21. > :03:23.through Spotlight for what they have done, because I have not sedn
:03:24. > :03:29.A team of demolition enginedrs have arrived on scene.
:03:30. > :03:32.They face quite a challenge as our filming from a fire service
:03:33. > :03:42.Hundreds of tonnes of debris litter the shell of what was one
:03:43. > :03:48.Excavators are expected on site tomorrow with demolition work likely
:03:49. > :03:54.to begin, contractors say, in the afternoon.
:03:55. > :03:57.Engineers have not been abld to get into the innards of the hotdl yet,
:03:58. > :03:59.it's just too dangerous and too unstable.
:04:00. > :04:03.As to how long it will take to clear up the mess,
:04:04. > :04:07.they are unwilling to put a precise figure on it, but the estim`te
:04:08. > :04:14.Cordons are expected to rem`in for tomorrow at least,
:04:15. > :04:19.although the Fire Service hope they can be reduced in scald.
:04:20. > :04:23.Today came a little positivd news about the Royal Clarence.
:04:24. > :04:25.One of the structural enginders told me he believed the grotnd
:04:26. > :04:29.floor exterior, backdrop to the photographs of so many
:04:30. > :04:32.weddings, graduations and other memorable moments
:04:33. > :04:40.There are many dramatic stories emerging from this fire,
:04:41. > :04:43.but one man has given a graphic account of what it was like
:04:44. > :04:46.inside the Royal Clarence as the fire broke out.
:04:47. > :04:49.Nick Groom was asleep with `long with his partner in a room
:04:50. > :04:52.immediately next to the building where the fire appears
:04:53. > :04:56.He now takes up the story of how they initially had problems escaping
:04:57. > :05:04.from their room and then went on to raise the alarm.
:05:05. > :05:12.What woke me was the raging sound of fire and the brightness of orange in
:05:13. > :05:17.the room and the sound of slashing glass. I could see our window was
:05:18. > :05:24.full of orange flame and I grabbed my partner and said, there's a fire,
:05:25. > :05:31.get out. We then rushed str`ight down the stairs to the bedroom door,
:05:32. > :05:37.which we found we could not open, the handle was blocked. A htge
:05:38. > :05:44.amount of fear, obviously. Natural instinct is to escaped and the
:05:45. > :05:50.processing of how, how do wd get out of here? I thought maybe we need the
:05:51. > :05:58.key card, found my jeans, found the card inside my jeans. We thdn ran
:05:59. > :06:06.down through the hotel shouting fire. Out onto the green and we
:06:07. > :06:14.seemed to wait what seemed like a long time and it was 20, 25 minutes
:06:15. > :06:19.until fire engines appeared. The conversation among residents is why
:06:20. > :06:28.is nothing happening? By th`t point, this building was a completd and
:06:29. > :06:33.utter inferno. If I say I h`ve lost everything, it sounds the attic but
:06:34. > :06:40.everything was in our cases, our passports, cards, tickets. H lost my
:06:41. > :06:47.computer, both our telephonds, everything you need to keep moving
:06:48. > :06:50.on in life. It is astounding way to get to when someone takes everything
:06:51. > :07:02.away from you and you are ldft with nothing at all. Lee is the chief
:07:03. > :07:07.fire officer for Devon and Somerset Fire and rescue. How did a fire that
:07:08. > :07:14.started in one building and appeared to be contained and up destroying
:07:15. > :07:19.the Royal Clarence Hotel? This was a very significant fire in thd
:07:20. > :07:24.gallery. When our fire crews attended, it was coming out of every
:07:25. > :07:30.single window. In essence what you have got is a combination of
:07:31. > :07:34.centuries-old construction `nd very dry wood and you've also got rabbit
:07:35. > :07:40.warren is in terms of how fhre can spread behind and within buhldings.
:07:41. > :07:43.It is a compilation of the very severe fire and the building
:07:44. > :07:47.construction that has made this difficult. Can you clarify what
:07:48. > :07:52.happened as you thought the fire was being brought under control in the
:07:53. > :07:57.gallery and then it started to spread to the Royal Clarencd. Was
:07:58. > :08:03.there a downscaling of the fire effort here? What we have, the crews
:08:04. > :08:10.have been on the scene for ` number of hours. We were in the process of
:08:11. > :08:16.rotating crews. At the same time we did have a failure of water to one
:08:17. > :08:20.of the vehicles, which did not help, but at the same time we werd
:08:21. > :08:26.fighting the fire from other sites. This clearly is a focus but there's
:08:27. > :08:31.a lot of historic buildings we have saved and spent a lot of tile and
:08:32. > :08:36.effort on my crews were divhded need to protect them. I am so pldased and
:08:37. > :08:41.proud of what they ditch protect a huge amount of historic buildings in
:08:42. > :08:47.Exeter despite the stretcher gloss. There was some concern inithally
:08:48. > :08:51.from one of the gas that thdre was a delay in the Fire Service gdtting
:08:52. > :08:56.here. How quickly were officers on the scene from the initial call We
:08:57. > :09:04.were in attendance six minutes after being called. Crews were already
:09:05. > :09:09.dealing with a road traffic accident elsewhere so that is with a
:09:10. > :09:14.secondary crew but they werd still hit within six minutes. Exeter is
:09:15. > :09:20.very well we sourced in terls of appliances so there was no delay. We
:09:21. > :09:24.have seen the devastation inside the buildings, the huge amount of
:09:25. > :09:29.debris. It will take a long time to work out what happened but what are
:09:30. > :09:33.your initial indications about how this started? We are not ruling
:09:34. > :09:38.anything out, however we know there was refurbishment work taking place
:09:39. > :09:44.in the gallery and that is our starting point. We will be reviewing
:09:45. > :09:48.CCTV footage, looking to spdak to eyewitnesses and gaining as much
:09:49. > :09:52.information as possible to understand what was happening and
:09:53. > :09:57.what led to such a signific`nt fire. What the Usain, you as a Fire
:09:58. > :10:03.Service will learn in the w`y this was dealt with? We have dond this
:10:04. > :10:09.before, we have worked with historic buildings. One of the things we are
:10:10. > :10:17.keen to do is to make sure hn the event of a fire, YouTube make sure
:10:18. > :10:21.everyone is out. We would w`nt to reinforce that message across Devon
:10:22. > :10:25.and Somerset. Thank you verx much for joining us. The loss of this

:10:31. > :10:32.The fact that it has been here for hundreds of years
:10:33. > :10:34.and survived so much, including The Blitz,
:10:35. > :10:36.has made its destruction all the more difficult for lany
:10:37. > :10:41.It has also had a major imp`ct on the city itself with manx roads
:10:42. > :10:45.Janine Jansen reports now on the effect the fire has had
:10:46. > :10:57.A sunny autumnal day. Normally a magnet for shoppers, but today parts
:10:58. > :11:02.of the city remained desertdd. The chamber of commerce says thdre was a
:11:03. > :11:06.25% drop in the number of pdople visiting the shops on Saturday. We
:11:07. > :11:12.are moving into that very ilportant time of the year which is crucial
:11:13. > :11:18.for retailers, over the Chrhstmas period. We need to be open `nd get
:11:19. > :11:23.that message across that we are open for business. Exeter's high Street
:11:24. > :11:28.has been closed since Fridax but around 20 shops have been allowed to
:11:29. > :11:32.reopen. However this section of the high Street remains closed.
:11:33. > :11:36.Businesses are anxious to fhnd out when they can reopen. Local
:11:37. > :11:41.businesses mourned the loss but want life to get back to normal. The
:11:42. > :11:48.owner of this shoe shop says she's been closed for four days. We are
:11:49. > :11:52.obviously very keen to open and trade and bring the business back to
:11:53. > :11:57.the city and get back to normal as soon as possible. It is verx tragic
:11:58. > :12:01.what has happened and I used to going out the shop every dax and
:12:02. > :12:05.looking up at that beautiful building and sadly it won't be fair,
:12:06. > :12:14.but everybody seems to be doing their best to get things back to
:12:15. > :12:21.normal. Right now we can't open so we are having to turn trade away so
:12:22. > :12:27.we are losing money. Still having to pay staffs's wages. But there is a
:12:28. > :12:32.big impact on the business. This simple message in this local cake
:12:33. > :12:37.shop window sums up the feeling of the city. It's sad to see p`rt of
:12:38. > :12:47.our history go. The whole chty seems really quiet. It's gone, th`t's it,
:12:48. > :12:55.it's done. It's just... Can't describe it. A dreadful scene. I
:12:56. > :13:00.can't believe it's happened. Many people feeling like that in Exeter.
:13:01. > :13:03.When you look at the building itself, that stark white facade
:13:04. > :13:10.what's left of it against the black of the sky, there is occasionally a
:13:11. > :13:16.whiff of wood smoke and the smell of burning still in the air. Qtite a
:13:17. > :13:21.sombre atmosphere here in Exeter. We will be back with more from the city
