:20:22. > :20:23.# While the weather's calm and still.
:20:24. > :20:25.It was the brainchild of John Grace, who taught
:20:26. > :20:27.TV animation to graphic design students in the 1970s and 1980s.
:20:28. > :20:30.Sadly John passed away in 2004 but his colleague Mitt Parsons, who
:20:31. > :20:34.lives in Bournemouth, co-wrote the music.
:20:35. > :20:39.John entered a photographic competition and won the competition
:20:40. > :20:41.and it's based on these three plasticine characters, Portland
:20:42. > :20:52.And as a result he was contacted by the
:20:53. > :20:56.company who made the Wombles and Paddington.
:20:57. > :20:58.Graham Clutterbuck, the director, asked him if he would like
:20:59. > :21:01.to make a series, and John said, well, I will write all the story
:21:02. > :21:04.script, and, Mik, would you like to write the music?
:21:05. > :21:06.So we kind of collaborated, it was quite a nice
:21:07. > :21:09.project to work on while we were teaching at the same time.
:21:10. > :21:11.Ross was having a terrible time trying to
:21:12. > :21:14.Most of the characters were named after sea
:21:15. > :21:16.areas and coastal stations around the British Isles, mentioned in the
:21:17. > :21:32.West 40s, Cromarty, Forth, Tyne, Dogger.
:21:33. > :21:39.There were two series, 26 stories, and I think the theme tune was the
:21:40. > :21:45.most memorable. # Oh, come with me to the rolling
:21:46. > :21:52.sea while the weather's calm and still. Dot.
:21:53. > :21:59.It is very much a cult thing so it has lasted years, and sometimes my
:22:00. > :22:04.students will come to me and say, did you write the music to Portland
:22:05. > :22:10.Bill? I think, that was 30 years ago!
:22:11. > :22:19.I think we have somebody who has heard it for the first time here.
:22:20. > :22:23.Yes, but I know the names from the shipping forecast.
:22:24. > :22:29.Any snow? I think we will get a little bit,
:22:30. > :22:37.not too bad. That might be my Michael Fish moment. We have had a
:22:38. > :22:40.lot of sunshine today. It is all change as we go through tomorrow,
:22:41. > :22:45.very cold and windy. Through the bulk of the day it will be rain but
:22:46. > :22:49.as the weather system moves eastwards there is the risk of some
:22:50. > :22:53.rain turning to sleep and snow. The main risk will be tomorrow night
:22:54. > :22:57.into Friday. It is worth keeping an eye on your local radio forecast. I
:22:58. > :23:02.think we will see some ice and snow showers, so it is worth keeping
:23:03. > :23:06.up-to-date. We have the north westerly flow, the winds will ease
:23:07. > :23:10.as we go through tonight, they were fairly gusty winds today. This
:23:11. > :23:14.weather system has been giving us a bit of a headache. It seems the bulk
:23:15. > :23:20.of that will fall as rain but as it moves further east parts of Dorset
:23:21. > :23:30.and Somerset, we could get snow over high ground. Anything that falls out
:23:31. > :23:34.of the sky on Friday is likely to be wintry and we also have the risk of
:23:35. > :23:39.some ice first thing on Friday. Very little changes into the weekend,
:23:40. > :23:43.Saturday, marginally lighter winds, the risk of wintry showers, but it
:23:44. > :23:48.turns my other through Sunday. We have had a fair bit of sunshine
:23:49. > :23:51.across the South West, a bit more cloud wishing in over the last few
:23:52. > :23:55.hours, relatively quiet for the first part of the night, the winds
:23:56. > :23:58.gradually easing through the evening. The bulk of the rain will
:23:59. > :24:02.come through the day tomorrow but with the breeze and the cloud
:24:03. > :24:07.temperature is not getting too low, four or 5 degrees. Then we start to
:24:08. > :24:12.get the rain pushing in. Initially it is rain, heavy at times, but when
:24:13. > :24:17.it clears eastwards on the back edge of that it could turn to sleep and
:24:18. > :24:21.snow, particularly for parts of Dorset, Somerset we could see a
:24:22. > :24:27.couple of temperatures. For most of us it will be over high ground. Much
:24:28. > :24:32.colder air behind so we could see some wintry showers. I think the
:24:33. > :24:37.temperatures will be colder than this with the strength of the winds.
:24:38. > :24:41.For the Isles of Scilly, most of us will see it falling as rain. The
:24:42. > :24:51.winds will be quite strong and gusty, 30 to 40 mph at times. In
:24:52. > :24:56.terms of our surfing forecast, I wouldn't recommend going out, very
:24:57. > :25:02.messy along the north coast, big waves quite widely across the
:25:03. > :25:13.south-west. South-westerly through to north westerly for the coastal
:25:14. > :25:17.winds. A lot happening over the next couple of days, it is worth keeping
:25:18. > :25:23.an eye on the forecast. Tomorrow, fairly heavy rain, turning
:25:24. > :25:27.increasingly wintry. Then the cold air starts to dig in, so the risk of
:25:28. > :25:31.ice on Friday with some wintry showers, but turning milder for the
:25:32. > :25:40.weekend. You are up to date so far but there
:25:41. > :25:41.will be late news at 10:30pm. We are back with Spotlight tomorrow at
:25:42. > :25:46.6:30pm.
