:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to Spotlight on a big night so it's goodbye from me,

:00:00. > :00:00.for one of the South West's leading football clubs.

:00:07. > :00:16.Plymouth Argyle get another crack at Liverpool in the FA Cup

:00:17. > :00:21.And we're going to be live at home Park as 17,500 fans pour into the

:00:22. > :00:25.stadium. We'll also be hearing from members

:00:26. > :00:28.of the Green Army who'll be watching Also tonight - alarm over

:00:29. > :00:40.an early morning wake up call. Fireman were stood there wearing

:00:41. > :00:42.their suits with their helmets and gas masks.

:00:43. > :00:43.Residents were forced to leave their homes,

:00:44. > :00:46.following an arson attack in Newquay.

:00:47. > :00:48.The settlement that is being proposed for Devon schools is

:00:49. > :00:53.Furious MPs condemn funding plans which could leave

:00:54. > :00:59.many of the region's schools worse off.

:01:00. > :01:01.And back with the family of a much loved Somerset nurse -

:01:02. > :01:04.the World War One autograph book signed by the patients

:01:05. > :01:28.Final preparations are underway at Home Park ahead of Plymouth Argyle's

:01:29. > :01:32.third round FA Cup replay match against Liverpool tonight.

:01:33. > :01:35.It's a sell out match - Argyle's Chief Executive telling us

:01:36. > :01:37.that he could have sold double the number of tickets

:01:38. > :01:42.But this is much more than just a football match.

:01:43. > :01:44.The game is also providing a major boost for Plymouth's economy.

:01:45. > :01:47.In a moment we'll be live at Home Park but first

:01:48. > :01:49.John Henderson reports on how the city has been

:01:50. > :02:09.Anyone for today's big match scarf? Today's souvenir match scarf. Game

:02:10. > :02:15.on! The football match that's a great shop window for Plymouth. With

:02:16. > :02:21.my binoculars down at the front, looking at the two warships sailing

:02:22. > :02:24.out this morning. Beautiful. Travelling fans have packed the

:02:25. > :02:35.city's hotels and began thes. -- Bed city's hotels and began thes. -- Bed

:02:36. > :02:39.Breakfasts. A lot of money coming in, a lot of new blood. People

:02:40. > :02:44.coming back for their summer holidays. They say Plymouth is a

:02:45. > :02:49.hidden jewel and I think it is. Good advertising for the town and it has

:02:50. > :02:56.filled up all my rooms. For one business, the icing on the cake. A

:02:57. > :03:01.sugar rush for the boys, giving them the energy to score that goal

:03:02. > :03:10.tonight. Tickets were hard to come by but just as sweet. These are my

:03:11. > :03:19.initials, 08 is for Steven Gerrard, my favourite player. And obviously,

:03:20. > :03:23.everybody knows the Kop. No price for guessing which team this

:03:24. > :03:28.Plymouth taxi driver is supporting. I've been getting a lot of grief.

:03:29. > :03:34.There's a lot of the full support is in Plymouth. Even those that aren't

:03:35. > :03:43.going are excited. It's nice. But little buzz going on. The Reds are

:03:44. > :03:47.here but Plymouth is united in green.

:03:48. > :03:49.Well the excitement is building at Home Park.

:03:50. > :03:56.And we'll be back with her later in the programme.

:03:57. > :04:01.Seven people were forced to leave their homes in Newquay

:04:02. > :04:04.early this morning after an arson attack on their building.

:04:05. > :04:06.A fire had been lit against the front door with police

:04:07. > :04:09.saying if the flames hadn't been spotted by a neighbour,

:04:10. > :04:12.the consequences for those living inside could have been far worse.

:04:13. > :04:19.The seven people who live in this building divided into two flats

:04:20. > :04:22.were given just minutes to leave after the fire brigade arrived

:04:23. > :04:31.that had been started against the front door.

:04:32. > :04:37.The Fire and Rescue Service had attended after being alerted by a

:04:38. > :04:42.resident who saw flames outside the front door. They put out the fire

:04:43. > :04:47.promptly and evacuated to seven persons. Police are treating this as

:04:48. > :04:52.suspicious. The police say the fire was lit on the outside of the door

:04:53. > :04:56.but the flames quickly made their way through the door and there is a

:04:57. > :04:59.strong smell of an accelerant such as petrol.

:05:00. > :05:01.This couple live in the ground floor flat.

:05:02. > :05:07.They then say their first thoughts were for their new kitten.

:05:08. > :05:13.There were fireman with their suits and their gas mass, they said we had

:05:14. > :05:20.to get out and get our stuff. And is there anyone else in the house. It

:05:21. > :05:29.was very much a panic. It could have been a lot worse. I think it was

:05:30. > :05:36.Lynn upstairs who found out what was going on. We were lucky that she got

:05:37. > :05:37.up at 6am. If it had started earlier, it could have been more

:05:38. > :05:39.dangerous. The police believe the fire

:05:40. > :05:46.was started between five o'clock They want anyone who saw

:05:47. > :05:52.anything suspicious in St Thomas' Road

:05:53. > :05:54.at this time to contact them. MPs are warning they'll vote

:05:55. > :05:56.against the government's education plans unless more funding

:05:57. > :05:58.is provided for Devon's schools. The county has always received

:05:59. > :06:01.one of the lowest amounts of cash per pupil and schools had hoped

:06:02. > :06:04.things would improve in proposals But analysis obtained by the BBC

:06:05. > :06:08.shows more than a third of Devon Okehampton College is one of those

:06:09. > :06:20.which stand to lose out. It will have a detrimental effect to

:06:21. > :06:22.everything we try to do. Whether that's extracurricular

:06:23. > :06:26.opportunities, potentially class sizes will be affected, staff

:06:27. > :06:29.allocations will be affected. There is no good news in this.

:06:30. > :06:32.Devon's MPs debated the issue at Westminster today.

:06:33. > :06:34.Conservative Gary Streeter was one of those with a stark

:06:35. > :06:39.If this educational funding settlement does not change,

:06:40. > :06:42.in relation to have in schools, if there is no significant uplift,

:06:43. > :06:44.whatever format it comes, whether in six months,

:06:45. > :06:47.nine months, 12 months' time, I will vote against it.

:06:48. > :06:50.Because the settlement that is being proposed

:06:51. > :07:06.for Devon schools is simply illogical and unfair.

:07:07. > :07:09.All this week we're shedding some light on the pressures on the health

:07:10. > :07:11.service to find out what effect they're having

:07:12. > :07:14.So-called bed blocking is one of the main sources

:07:15. > :07:18.It's when patients remain in a hospital bed even though

:07:19. > :07:25.It cost south west hospitals more than 15,000 days

:07:26. > :07:28.Most of the patients were waiting for care to be

:07:29. > :07:30.arranged for them elsewhere, but providing that care

:07:31. > :07:32.is increasing the demands on our local councils.

:07:33. > :07:35.They're warning they don't have enough funding to pay for it.

:07:36. > :07:37.Our health correspondent Jenny Walrond has been investigating.

:07:38. > :07:39.When social care works well, the need to use other health

:07:40. > :07:44.Chris Head from Connor Downs has motor neurone disease

:07:45. > :07:52.and says his care package enables his wife Jacqui to care

:07:53. > :08:01.They are widening every door in the bungalow so I can get the wheelchair

:08:02. > :08:10.through without colliding with the doors which I have been doing for

:08:11. > :08:14.the last few months. Know that people in their own homes with the

:08:15. > :08:18.right equipment is helpful to everybody in the longer term.

:08:19. > :08:20.But not everyone has such a good experience.

:08:21. > :08:22.The main cause of so-called "bed blocking"

:08:23. > :08:24.in our hospitals is the wait some people face

:08:25. > :08:26.getting social care packages arranged to enable them

:08:27. > :08:32.And that has an impact throughout the hospital.

:08:33. > :08:35.Nigel Charles has non-Hodgkins lymphoma and spent 13 hours

:08:36. > :08:38.on a trolley in Derriford hospital's emergency department

:08:39. > :08:41.after experiencing a pulmonary embolism.

:08:42. > :08:44.He says he was told a shortage of social care

:08:45. > :08:58.It makes you really cross. It's not the fault of the hospital but the

:08:59. > :09:04.broader social care system which has inadequate funding. Thinking, I

:09:05. > :09:09.could be properly taken care of. In particular, I have observed, there

:09:10. > :09:13.are lot of old people around me. That is what really upset me. Older

:09:14. > :09:15.people stuck on trolleys for hours on end.

:09:16. > :09:17.Derriford hospital says its emergency department is seeing

:09:18. > :09:20.unprecedented demand and that staff try to make patients as comfortable

:09:21. > :09:23.And problems arranging social care can means patients

:09:24. > :09:26.at the Royal Cornwall Hospital's emergency department

:09:27. > :09:31.also sometimes spend 12 hours or more waiting for a bed.

:09:32. > :09:40.We know that most days over the winter, we've had over 100 patients

:09:41. > :09:45.who been medically fit for discharge just awaiting additional social

:09:46. > :09:50.care. That has a knock-on effect for patients in A who need to be

:09:51. > :09:58.admitted to hospital. It's easy to see the impact that a lack of social

:09:59. > :10:03.care has. But authorities warned that they don't have money to pay

:10:04. > :10:07.for it. Many authorities are not confident they have the funding to

:10:08. > :10:12.fulfil their legal responsibilities this financial year. Even more are

:10:13. > :10:16.not confident about the next financial year. While the government

:10:17. > :10:20.says it is giving more money for social care, it is difficult to see

:10:21. > :10:23.the problem going away any time soon.

:10:24. > :10:25.On tomorrow night's Spotlight some of the key decision makers

:10:26. > :10:27.in the health service in the South West

:10:28. > :10:30.will be here for a special debate which we'll continue

:10:31. > :10:31.after the programme live on our Facebook page.

:10:32. > :10:34.You don't have to have a Facebook account to join the debate.

:10:35. > :10:39.Just go online to facebook.com/BBCSpotlight

:10:40. > :10:42.And our local radio stations are also debating

:10:43. > :10:44.the state of the national health service tomorrow.

:10:45. > :10:48.Join Laurence Reed on BBC Radio Cornwall at midday -

:10:49. > :11:09.and you can have a chat with me on BBC Radio Devon from one o'clock.

:11:10. > :11:18.A book in which soldiers drew pictures and signed autographs in

:11:19. > :11:19.honour of the nurse that cared for them has just been returned to her

:11:20. > :11:21.family. Violet's book is full

:11:22. > :11:23.of touching letters. "I wish you all the best

:11:24. > :11:28.things of the world." Iris Simmons founded 40 years ago

:11:29. > :11:31.and has treasured it since. She is very tender

:11:32. > :11:35.and caring to the men But determined to return

:11:36. > :11:42.the book to Violet's family, Researchers found Violet's grandson

:11:43. > :11:50.and they met for the first time. I was just so pleased that somebody

:11:51. > :11:56.had gone to all that effort to track me down to let me have

:11:57. > :12:11.something that my long lost grandmother

:12:12. > :12:13.owned, who I know virtually nothing about,

:12:14. > :12:15.to return it to me, and it's Iris was living there

:12:16. > :12:19.when she found her book. Strangely, Iris and Mark now

:12:20. > :12:22.live within a few miles Stranger too, Dave

:12:23. > :12:25.discovered Violet's old home I've lived all over the place

:12:26. > :12:30.and settled in this area and didn't even know that this

:12:31. > :12:33.was on my doorstep. It's been really good

:12:34. > :12:35.to find all this out. Firstly that the book has been

:12:36. > :12:39.recovered by family and will be, hopefully, in the family

:12:40. > :12:43.from now on. Violet died in 1972

:12:44. > :12:45.but her life's work lives If you've just joined us,

:12:46. > :12:54.it's a big night for one Live now to Home Park and Natalie's

:12:55. > :13:01.there with all the news 17,500 fans are expected

:13:02. > :13:12.to be here at Home Park tonight for the game -

:13:13. > :13:15.many of them have made it already. But there are many many

:13:16. > :13:17.more who won't be here - some of them are in far flung

:13:18. > :13:20.corners of the world. I've tracked a few of them down -

:13:21. > :13:23.from Afghanistan to the USA to Australia and New Zealand -

:13:24. > :13:46.all members of the I will be watching in Kaboul,

:13:47. > :13:52.Afghanistan. I'm from Perth Western Australia, here is my mum Sue and my

:13:53. > :13:58.dad Mike, and we are all going to be watching the game against Liverpool

:13:59. > :14:06.on Monday morning at 3:45am. I'm Claire and this is Kevin and we will

:14:07. > :14:14.be watching from the beautiful island in Honduras. I'm going to be

:14:15. > :14:23.watching from Mick Ugen USA. My name's Andy Soper, I'm calling from

:14:24. > :14:30.New Zealand. I'll be watching from 5am tomorrow morning. I'm very

:14:31. > :14:37.passionate with the North Argyll. I'd rather be there in real life.

:14:38. > :14:42.He's the reason I'm so Argyll mad. He took me when I was seven and it

:14:43. > :14:49.has carried on from them. How does it feel to be so far away from the

:14:50. > :14:54.big game? It's so frustrating. One of the best feelings is to look at

:14:55. > :14:59.the app on my mobile phone and to see the next game is Liverpool

:15:00. > :15:05.against Plymouth Argyle. I've considered flying home on a couple

:15:06. > :15:11.of occasions. Unfortunately, losing at Wembley. I was never able to make

:15:12. > :15:16.it. It's a great thing that they are airing on screen here. Not only one

:15:17. > :15:22.game, but two, and maybe three if they beat Liverpool. I've told my

:15:23. > :15:28.mates that I won't be at golf because this is far more important.

:15:29. > :15:33.Did you watch the first game at Anfield? We were on the edge of our

:15:34. > :15:38.seats. They took so much pressure in the second half but they worse

:15:39. > :15:43.magnificent. Were hoping for more of the same on Wednesday. We had a

:15:44. > :15:47.slight problem with the electric for the last five or six minutes so we

:15:48. > :15:53.didn't know the result until it came back on again. The one thing I miss

:15:54. > :16:00.more than anything is the trip from hail up to Argyll. I would eat my

:16:01. > :16:07.pasty, watch the game with my mates. Block three, C 92. It's a close

:16:08. > :16:14.game, really exciting. At 3:45am, it's hard work. It will be a mid

:16:15. > :16:18.afternoon kick-off for me with the time difference. Everything will be

:16:19. > :16:27.on hold for me. Albee watching the game, really excited. Albee back in

:16:28. > :16:38.a few weeks. I'll be home for the next round match. Can they do it?

:16:39. > :16:43.Come on, Argyll! Such lovely people and it was fantastic to talk to them

:16:44. > :16:48.all. If you are watching the match anywhere unusual, take a picture and

:16:49. > :16:53.post it on our Facebook page. Keep it clean though.

:16:54. > :16:55.Now let's see now how the managers are feeling.

:16:56. > :16:58.The superstars landed in Devon this morning,

:16:59. > :17:03.But how many of their big name players will be

:17:04. > :17:07.In the first match, three players who cost Liverpool more

:17:08. > :17:10.than ?60 million pounds between them,

:17:11. > :17:13.were brought on to try and break the deadlock - to no avail.

:17:14. > :17:15.The manager has no regrets, but there's a big hint

:17:16. > :17:26.We want to win the game and go to the next round. So, you will see it.

:17:27. > :17:33.Probably, it will be different to the team that we had in the first

:17:34. > :17:35.game. But that's not 100% sure. Have to wait a little bit.

:17:36. > :17:39.His opposite number has a much more simplistic approach.

:17:40. > :17:46.You've got to go and enjoy the match. It's just another game. A

:17:47. > :17:51.very good spectacle for everybody in the city but as a footballer, it's

:17:52. > :17:55.11 against 11 on the park and you never know what can happen. Well

:17:56. > :17:57.said, Derek Adams. Did you know that here in Plymouth,

:17:58. > :18:02.Liverpool fans have a meeting place where they can go and

:18:03. > :18:04.enjoy games together? It's Porters on the Barbican

:18:05. > :18:07.and tonight it's welcoming new visitors who've made the trip

:18:08. > :18:10.from Merseyside and have stopped off there for a pasty before

:18:11. > :18:12.they come here to Home Park. Hamish Marshall has

:18:13. > :18:21.been to meet them. The atmosphere is building here. The

:18:22. > :18:26.flag says it all. This is where the Liverpool fans of Plymouth com to

:18:27. > :18:31.watch the match. Some of them are able to get to home Park tonight.

:18:32. > :18:40.Steve, you're the landlord. How big is this? Over the last two seasons

:18:41. > :18:46.it has built and built. Whatever game is on, we have a great time.

:18:47. > :18:52.They are nice people. You've been out of Liverpool for a while but you

:18:53. > :18:58.are still a fan. I've been here 42 years. Supporters do a fantastic

:18:59. > :19:05.job. It's a home from home. How's it going to go tonight? I firmly

:19:06. > :19:09.believe it should be 3- 02. But Argyll did really well. I'm really

:19:10. > :19:15.pleased that they got the money for the replay but I honestly think that

:19:16. > :19:21.we'll win 3-0. Scott, what do you think will happen tonight? Any win

:19:22. > :19:28.is fine by me. I know a lot of locals and if they win, I won't hear

:19:29. > :19:33.the end of it. How nice would be to get home before midnight? It's

:19:34. > :19:41.brilliant. Normally, I wouldn't be home before midnight. Tonight, taxi

:19:42. > :19:46.home, five minutes. It's brilliant. I'm just heading up to home Park to

:19:47. > :19:52.join you up there. But those here in the pub are going to have a

:19:53. > :19:57.brilliant time. It sounds fantastic. There are loads of famous people

:19:58. > :20:04.here. I've seen Steven Gerrard, Neil Warnock. I've got some more famous

:20:05. > :20:10.people. John Houston. You are here to work for five live. Did you

:20:11. > :20:16.expect to be here for the replay? I don't think any others expected to

:20:17. > :20:21.be here. I have to say, you've deserved the right to be here. A

:20:22. > :20:25.wonderful defensive display from Plymouth. Derek Adam Scott his

:20:26. > :20:31.tactics spot on. Financially, they will be in a better place for the

:20:32. > :20:37.replay. I feel it will push them on. League 2, second at the minute, this

:20:38. > :20:45.is a fantastic boost for the club. Great atmosphere, isn't it? It's

:20:46. > :20:49.brilliant. A pleasure to be here. Not only the Argyle fans. The

:20:50. > :20:54.Liverpool fans. People have spent a whole day coming here tonight and it

:20:55. > :20:57.is a big game for both clubs but it is huge for Plymouth. They deserve

:20:58. > :21:09.it. They've worked so hard to get here. Ryan, you are injured. Are you

:21:10. > :21:13.gutted to be missing it? I am gutted. But I'm pleased to be here

:21:14. > :21:20.watching and involved in the club today. You are both summarising for

:21:21. > :21:26.radio Devon. Are you looking forward to it? I've done it all season and

:21:27. > :21:35.it's been really good, keeping my mind close to the team. He's had a

:21:36. > :21:40.blinder every game. Don't get used to the radio, we need you back,

:21:41. > :21:47.pitch. John, who do you think is going to do it tonight? The FA Cup

:21:48. > :21:52.is stoked traditionally with shocks and upsets. It can happen. You saw

:21:53. > :21:58.Lincoln knockout Ipswich last night. Already, six Premier League clubs

:21:59. > :22:02.have gone out. It can happen. You have got to dream. I think Liverpool

:22:03. > :22:06.will be too strong on the night. They will play with a strong front

:22:07. > :22:11.three but Plymouth will give it everything and it won't be a stroll

:22:12. > :22:15.in the park for Liverpool tonight. I'm hoping for an Argyll win. It's a

:22:16. > :22:24.tough test. It would be memorable. Fingers crossed. And, Ryan? No goals

:22:25. > :22:31.during the game but late on somebody can nick it. That is my guess. They
