:01:18. > :01:28.Exeter City Council wanted the facade brought down to reduce

:01:29. > :01:32.the cordon on Cathedral Gredn to allow more businesses to open

:01:33. > :01:38.All of it is very sad, but it will be built again.

:01:39. > :01:42.Our policy is to build it to what it was, at least thd front

:01:43. > :01:49.The cathedral, spiritual sotl of this city, has now reopened.

:01:50. > :01:52.Today was the highest profile part of the demolition operation.

:01:53. > :02:10.The rest of the work is expdcted to take several weeks at le`st.

:02:11. > :02:14.The ground and first floors are historically very important

:02:15. > :02:24.They date from the 13th century so the plan is now for

:02:25. > :02:32.the demolition crews to work slowly and carefully around them

:02:33. > :02:35.in an attempt to try and prdserve that precious heritage.

:02:36. > :02:37.A rising number of police officers in Devon and Cornwall are bding

:02:38. > :02:41.This year, nearly 250 officdrs in the force have been assatlted,

:02:42. > :02:44.in four cases it was so sevdre it was classed as

:02:45. > :02:48.The number of assaults on officers is rising year on year.

:02:49. > :02:50.Well, today the issue was debated in Parliament.

:02:51. > :02:53.Spotlight has been speaking to PC Dan Care who was assaulted one night

:02:54. > :03:01.One of the males became aggressive and punched my

:03:02. > :03:08.It ended up back around this area here.

:03:09. > :03:11.The male started throwing punches at me and

:03:12. > :03:16.other people in the group started to get involved.

:03:17. > :03:19.I didn't know I'd be able to go back to front line policing.

:03:20. > :03:21.It is something I really loved doing.

:03:22. > :03:23.It's had a big effect and it's been a

:03:24. > :03:29.It's only recently going on holiday that I realised how much of an

:03:30. > :03:32.effect it had on me, and my wife noticed the change.

:03:33. > :03:38.It took that to realise how bad it had been.

:03:45. > :03:46.There's been scathing criticism of the Environment Agency

:03:47. > :03:50.for the way it dealt with flooding on the Somerset Levels

:03:55. > :03:56.the agency to be stripped of some of its powers,

:03:57. > :04:00.and a new National Floods Commissioner to be appointed.

:04:01. > :04:03.Temperatures may have been in the high teens earlier this week,

:04:04. > :04:06.but tonight gritters are out on some of Devon's major roads

:04:07. > :04:11.Road surface temperatures are forecast to drop close

:04:12. > :04:14.to freezing in a number of areas overnight.

:04:15. > :04:18.Torquay will have Christmas lights this year after all.

:04:19. > :04:21.The town's Chamber of Commerce had been struggling to fund

:04:22. > :04:29.But now a local radio station has stepped in to help.

:04:30. > :04:34.Work's under way in Devon to reunite child refugees and asylum sdekers

:04:35. > :04:36.with their families in other areas of the UK.

:04:37. > :04:39.20 boys under the age of 18 arrived in Devon from Calais last wdek.

:04:40. > :04:42.The Mayor of Great Torrington says the outpouring of generositx

:04:43. > :04:46.But as our north Devon reporter Andrea Ormsby reports,

:04:58. > :04:59.The Plough art centre in Great Torrington is the

:05:00. > :05:11.Until last week, this is where they were based in Calais,

:05:12. > :05:14.now dismantled and cleared of thousands of people

:05:15. > :05:17.who fled their own war-torn countries.

:05:18. > :05:19.The community outpouring of kindness, love and generosity has

:05:20. > :05:25.quite emotional to see all the positive stuff happdning.

:05:26. > :05:32.Of course, it is not all positive as some groups have been set up

:05:33. > :05:34.specifically to protest about the refugees

:05:35. > :05:36.being here and one on

:05:37. > :05:40.Facebook is trying to organhse a protest rally to show the strength

:05:41. > :05:48.This is another protest grotp, but it's against the idea of a

:05:49. > :05:51.demonstration saying it would be wrong to burden the police.

:05:52. > :05:54.Its Facebook page has gone back online

:05:55. > :05:58.after winning an appeal after complaints of racism.

:05:59. > :06:02.The group said it formed because several Devon counchls

:06:03. > :06:07.friendly without consulting constituents first.

:06:08. > :06:14.Other Facebook pages are springing up in responsd.

:06:15. > :06:16.This one has more than 4,000 likes after a week.

:06:17. > :06:20.And heartening to know so many other people

:06:21. > :06:23.Another vanload is off to the refugees.

:06:24. > :06:25.The process of reuniting thdm with family members

:06:26. > :06:33.already in the UK is said to be ongoing.

:06:41. > :06:42.at Eastwood Park women's prison in Gloucestershire.

:06:43. > :06:45.To mark its 20th anniversarx, reporter Lee Madan has been given

:06:46. > :06:50.exclusive access to find out what life inside is like.

:06:51. > :06:56.The thought of coming here is just mind blowing.

:06:57. > :06:59.There are bullies within thd prison, but I don't think you'll evdr be

:07:00. > :07:02.Diane is serving two-and-a-half years for committing fraud.

:07:03. > :07:05.Anne, 12 years for conspiracy to supply drugs.

:07:06. > :07:10.For both, their first time behind bars was daunting.

:07:11. > :07:13.I think I cried constantly all night.

:07:14. > :07:19.I do beat myself up for it, I do feel totally responsible

:07:20. > :07:25.Prison may be about punishmdnt but it's also about rehabilhtation.

:07:26. > :07:28.It offers courses run by Western College and finds some

:07:29. > :07:31.inmates jobs they can do from inside jail.

:07:32. > :07:36.Diane works for the national career service.

:07:37. > :07:39.As tough as it was I thought there's no way I'm going

:07:40. > :07:43.Although Eastwood Park has seen many changes over 20 years,

:07:44. > :07:46.one thing has stayed the sale, the fact that staff agree

:07:47. > :07:51.with estimates that 50% of hnmates here and in every other wom`n's

:07:52. > :07:56.prison in the country are themselves the victims of abuse.

:07:57. > :07:59.Since it opened Eastwood Park has tried different ways to try

:08:00. > :08:06.It's incredibly difficult for women to turn around and walk awax

:08:07. > :08:09.from people who may be abushng them, with young children -

:08:10. > :08:11.potentially very young children - when the alternative

:08:12. > :08:17.If you give them that opportunity where they can earn a living

:08:18. > :08:20.and they can sustain life independent of that it gives

:08:21. > :08:24.Most women prisoners are on short sentences.

:08:25. > :08:26.The Governor wants judges to consider giving longer sdntences

:08:27. > :08:37.It is impossible to undo decades of abuse.

:08:38. > :08:40.The governor wants more timd with inmates to stop jail

:08:41. > :08:44.being a short-term refuge they keeep coming back to make it somewhere

:08:45. > :08:53.they can properly plan their escape from a lifetime of abuse.

:08:54. > :08:56.The Lizard juniper is thought to be one of the rarest plants in England

:08:57. > :08:58.and only grows on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula.

:08:59. > :09:00.At one stage, experts estimated there were only 13

:09:01. > :09:05.But it's hoped that it's now no longer under the threat

:09:06. > :09:08.of extinction as cuttings t`ken have successfully grown

:09:09. > :09:18.It's expected after a littld nurturing they will begin to thrive
