:00:11. > :00:11.Good evening. for the news where you are.

:00:12. > :00:13.An outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed at the famous

:00:14. > :00:19.Nine swans tested positive for the H5N8 strain of the disease.

:00:20. > :00:22.And tonight, another case of the illness in a wild bird has

:00:23. > :00:25.emerged on an RSPB reserve near Powderham Castle in Devon.

:00:26. > :00:28.Last month, the government ordered poultry farmers to take precautions

:00:29. > :00:30.to try to stop the spread of the virus.

:00:31. > :00:37.Confirmation of the presence of the bird flu virus

:00:38. > :00:41.here at Abbotsbury Swannery came after ten dead swans

:00:42. > :00:45.were sent for tests - nine tested positive for the H5N8

:00:46. > :00:57.It is not a threat to humans generally, that has been confirmed,

:00:58. > :01:01.so that is the good thing, but it is a very serious

:01:02. > :01:08.It does strike the young ones particularly very hard.

:01:09. > :01:12.So far this winter, around 80 swans have been found dead,

:01:13. > :01:15.double the usual number for the winter period.

:01:16. > :01:18.Tonight, government scientists are stressing that the current

:01:19. > :01:23.strain of bird flu does not pose a risk to people.

:01:24. > :01:27.This is a very serious disease of birds, but the good thing is that

:01:28. > :01:30.it's not causing any concerns to human health, so we need people

:01:31. > :01:34.to keep this disease out of their kept birds,

:01:35. > :01:36.whether it's in their back yard or in a full-scale,

:01:37. > :01:42.At the start of December, the government ordered poultry farms

:01:43. > :01:45.like this one near Weymouth to bring their free range

:01:46. > :01:49.hens indoors and to take precautions in a bid to stop

:01:50. > :01:54.They say they are disappointed that DEFRA did not tell them

:01:55. > :01:59.about the presence of the virus a few miles away.

:02:00. > :02:05.We heard that from our vet that we liaise with and over social media.

:02:06. > :02:13.Already, keeping their hens indoors has led to a substantial

:02:14. > :02:20.20% of what we normally get, so for us financially,

:02:21. > :02:25.The measures imposed to try to restrict the spread

:02:26. > :02:30.of bird flu will be enforced until February 28th.

:02:31. > :02:32.The swannery is closed at the moment for its normal winter break,

:02:33. > :02:36.but are hoping the bird flu virus will have run its course by the time

:02:37. > :02:46.So how do our poultry farmers protect their birds from avian

:02:47. > :02:50.flu, particularly those with free range status?

:02:51. > :02:55.Tonight, Johnny Rutherford has been at one farm near Saltash.

:02:56. > :02:58.At this chicken farm, 18,500 free range chickens have been

:02:59. > :03:03.I'm going to have a quick look at them.

:03:04. > :03:06.First I have to dip my feet in some disinfectant mixture

:03:07. > :03:13.The owner of the chicken farm is Ian.

:03:14. > :03:15.Free range chickens, we can see them there,

:03:16. > :03:18.but they are not allowed out so they are not really

:03:19. > :03:23.At the moment, we have to keep them in by law.

:03:24. > :03:25.They are used to going outside, so by keeping them in,

:03:26. > :03:28.unfortunately it means the birds get stressed and we have to do

:03:29. > :03:31.things to try and prevent them getting stressed.

:03:32. > :03:33.What concerns me slightly is the fact that some people

:03:34. > :03:36.don't seem to realise, particularly people with backyard

:03:37. > :03:39.flocks, that they need to keep them shut in.

:03:40. > :03:42.If they catch the disease, if a neighbour of mine gets

:03:43. > :03:45.the disease in their backyard chickens, it would mean

:03:46. > :03:48.all of my chickens would have to be culled as ta contagious flock

:03:49. > :03:54.You have to keep them in until the end of February, is that right?

:03:55. > :04:00.At the moment, that is the date that has been set.

:04:01. > :04:03.If there are not any more cases, hopefully that will be the date.

:04:04. > :04:07.If there are, I guess that date will be reviewed as well.

:04:08. > :04:09.Lots of concerns across the industry and hopefully this

:04:10. > :04:16.In 2015, Josh Clayton went missing whilst working

:04:17. > :04:22.He was last seen at a party and ten days later, his body

:04:23. > :04:25.Today, at an inquest, his death was described as a mystery

:04:26. > :04:28.with no signs of drowning or of an attack.

:04:29. > :04:31.From Plymouth coroners court, here's John Danks.

:04:32. > :04:35.Josh Clayton was last seen at around 1.45 on the morning

:04:36. > :04:43.He had been at a party on Tresco where he worked.

:04:44. > :04:46.Ten days after his disappearance, his body was discovered on a small

:04:47. > :04:50.island north of Tresco, but how he died still

:04:51. > :04:57.A forensic pathologist said there were no obvious signs

:04:58. > :05:00.Neither were there signs of drowning.

:05:01. > :05:03.He recorded the cause of death as an ascertained.

:05:04. > :05:08.Toxicology reports found no trace of drugs in Josh's system.

:05:09. > :05:11.He had consumed alcohol that evening, equivalent of 2.5

:05:12. > :05:17.The family's barrister asked the pathologist if a bloodstained

:05:18. > :05:24.No, said the pathologist, this wasn't a criminal investigation.

:05:25. > :05:27.Asked if it was possible that an assault may have taken place, no,

:05:28. > :05:31.came the reply, but there was no sign of one.

:05:32. > :05:34.Josh's family travelled down from Taunton for the inquest,

:05:35. > :05:43.A young mother from Devon, who had a rare and aggressive form

:05:44. > :05:48.We featured Kim Jenkins on Spotlight just a couple

:05:49. > :05:51.of days before Christmas, after her local community raised

:05:52. > :05:55.thousands of pounds to help pay for pioneering treatment abroad.

:05:56. > :06:00.Her husband Tom has posted a tribute on social media saying she passed

:06:01. > :06:06.away on Saturday night peacefully and with great honour.

:06:07. > :06:08.The government has announced a new contract -

:06:09. > :06:11.worth more than a quarter of a billion pounds -

:06:12. > :06:15.The deal will see the company, previously known as Agusta Westland,

:06:16. > :06:16.providing service and support for the UK military's

:06:17. > :06:20.The government says it will safeguard up to 500 jobs,

:06:21. > :06:23.but the union says it does little to safeguard the long-term

:06:24. > :06:33.It's all about these helicopters, the Wildcat, 62 of which were made

:06:34. > :06:38.in Yeovil for service in the British Navy and Army.

:06:39. > :06:42.Now the contract is valued at ?271 million and it's

:06:43. > :06:46.essentially for the maintenance of the helicopters for

:06:47. > :06:50.Actually, what was announced today was just the latest stage

:06:51. > :06:55.of a 30-year contract that was signed back in 2012,

:06:56. > :06:59.so critics argue it is really recycling old news and that in any

:07:00. > :07:06.case, what this place really needs is new orders for new aircraft.

:07:07. > :07:09.And yet, last year, the Ministry of Defence decided not to let

:07:10. > :07:13.Leonardo build the new Apache attack helicopter, preferring

:07:14. > :07:24.Of course that went to America and this almost feels

:07:25. > :07:29.All the aircraft in this production shed are here

:07:30. > :07:35.Right now there are no new orders, but the company says it is talking

:07:36. > :07:41.No firm orders yet, but like any business such as ours we know

:07:42. > :07:45.where the customer is and we know what the requirements are and we're

:07:46. > :07:49.working very hard to land those orders this year.

:07:50. > :07:52.There remains a question mark over the equipment used to make

:07:53. > :07:56.the airframes for the Wildcat, amid suggestions that could be moved

:07:57. > :08:00.to a factory in Poland, even though the equipment is owned

:08:01. > :08:10.The minister says no decision has been made yet.

:08:11. > :08:13.Plymouth Argyle will have a home draw in the Fourth Round of the FA

:08:14. > :08:15.Cup IF they can get past Liverpool next week.

:08:16. > :08:19.The Pilgrims' reward for knocking out the Premier League giants

:08:20. > :08:22.would be a visit from Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, who

:08:23. > :08:28.Plymouth's third round replay against Liverpool is at

:08:29. > :08:36.I think that is a bit of a task that we have on our hands,

:08:37. > :08:39.but anything can happen in the FA Cup, as you can see,

:08:40. > :08:42.and I think we are really happy to have a home draw.

:08:43. > :08:44.Wolves are a massive club and they are bound

:08:45. > :08:47.Hopefully they will, hopefully we get that far

:08:48. > :08:50.and it will be a great, great occasion again.

:08:51. > :09:00.Getting cold. Quite a big drop in the temperatures this week. Not too

:09:01. > :09:06.bad at the moment but each day this week, it will gradually get colder

:09:07. > :09:11.by the time we get to Friday, temperatures just above freezing. It

:09:12. > :09:16.will turn much colder and some of the showers by the end of the week

:09:17. > :09:21.will be wintry, not just over high ground. We have low pressure in

:09:22. > :09:25.charge, this was the rain we saw earlier which has now moved into

:09:26. > :09:32.northern France. Behind it, another one will follow. The big change

:09:33. > :09:38.happens as we move into Wednesday and Thursday. We start to see the

:09:39. > :09:41.air, Iceland, Queensland group towards us into Wednesday and

:09:42. > :09:50.Thursday and once this system travels through Scotland and head

:09:51. > :09:55.south, that is the really cold air. Once that gets to the south, it

:09:56. > :10:00.opens the door to cold air and to the risk of those wintry showers.

:10:01. > :10:04.For the moment the temperatures are above freezing. They will stay that

:10:05. > :10:11.way. Overnight we have some clear sky but another dry nights and with

:10:12. > :10:18.the winds from the North West week could see temperatures of three or 4

:10:19. > :10:22.degrees. Tomorrow we have a lot of cloud and it will bring outbreaks of

:10:23. > :10:28.rain through the day which will move away from the afternoon. Cloudy

:10:29. > :10:34.skies but temperatures of ten or 11 degrees. Wednesday is a bit colder.

:10:35. > :10:39.If you showers are possible through the day but in general it is mainly

:10:40. > :10:44.dry in the second half of the afternoon. Thursday, the cold air

:10:45. > :10:51.begins to arrive, some sleep. Friday, more wintry showers. Weather

:10:52. > :10:53.and travel updates on your BBC local radio station from 6am. From Bass,

:10:54. > :11:04.good night. precipitation we get will be of a

:11:05. > :11:08.wintry nation and Thursday is one we have to watch out for. The weekend

:11:09. > :11:09.outlook, it stays chilly with a northerly
