:00:00. > :00:16.A verdict of unlawful killing has been recorded into the death
:00:17. > :00:18.of a wealthy Devon businessman whose family are convinced
:00:19. > :00:28.Barry Pring was killed by a speeding vehicle in Ukraine.
:00:29. > :00:32.From the inquest in Exeter, Anna Varle reports.
:00:33. > :00:35.It has been a nine-year battle for the Pring family to find out
:00:36. > :00:40.But does today's verdict give them any comfort?
:00:41. > :00:45.The conclusion today was what we expected.
:00:46. > :00:50.However, that conclusion still isn't going to get justice for Barry,
:00:51. > :00:52.because the person that murdered him is still a free person.
:00:53. > :00:55.The 47-year-old had been celebrating his first wedding anniversary
:00:56. > :01:05.He was with his wife and former stripper, Ganna Ziuzina.
:01:06. > :01:07.The inquest heard how the couple had left
:01:08. > :01:10.the restaurant and the couple were trying to hail a cab.
:01:11. > :01:13.Ganna Ziuzina turned back to try and fetch
:01:14. > :01:16.a glove, and then Barry was hit by a car travelling at speed,
:01:17. > :01:20.The coroner said Barry Pring had been tricked into
:01:21. > :01:22.standing on a westbound carriageway, which was the wrong
:01:23. > :01:25.Despite the verdict of unlawful killing, Devon and Cornwall Police
:01:26. > :01:29.have no jurisdiction to take it further.
:01:30. > :01:31.As far as Devon and Cornwall Police is concerned,
:01:32. > :01:34.it has always been a Ukrainian-led investigation.
:01:35. > :01:37.We have no jurisdiction, we can't get any jurisdiction
:01:38. > :01:42.We are just hopeful that the Ukrainian authorities
:01:43. > :01:44.will pick up the verdict from the coroner and can
:01:45. > :01:47.take further action back in the Ukraine.
:01:48. > :01:51.The family, however, vowed to continue the fight.
:01:52. > :01:53.Does this give you any closure at all?
:01:54. > :02:00.And we will keep fighting until we get justice.
:02:01. > :02:06.That report from Anna Varle in Exeter.
:02:07. > :02:09.Campaigners in North Devon fighting to save two theatres are calling
:02:10. > :02:13.on the local council to step in and help.
:02:14. > :02:16.The trust which ran the Queen's Theatre in Barnstaple
:02:17. > :02:19.and the Landmark in Ilfracombe went into administration yesterday.
:02:20. > :02:21.They received nearly ?300,000 in council money
:02:22. > :02:32.The doors are closed now but these campaigners want them
:02:33. > :02:44.This singer performed at the theatre in Barnstaple last week.
:02:45. > :02:55.It is so sad that it is all going to be gone and this makes people
:02:56. > :02:58.like me inspired and able to dream big and I don't want it to
:02:59. > :03:02.This and the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe have gone
:03:03. > :03:07.There are calls for the local council to step in.
:03:08. > :03:12.They don't have endless money, we understand that, but we believe
:03:13. > :03:19.there is a viable future for these theatres and as North Devon Council
:03:20. > :03:22.own the theatre buildings, we hope we can come to a solution.
:03:23. > :03:25.We are pleading with the council to work with us and the administrator
:03:26. > :03:27.to find a way to get doors open again.
:03:28. > :03:29.The North Devon Theatres Trust blamed falling sales
:03:30. > :03:32.and a cut in public subsidy from the local council
:03:33. > :03:38.These closures leave the Plough arts Centre in Great Torrington
:03:39. > :03:44.as the last art centre for miles around.
:03:45. > :03:46.It survives on just ?9,000 a year in public funding.
:03:47. > :03:48.Many organisations have been on a journey of weaning themselves
:03:49. > :03:52.off public funding out of necessity and it is a journey that some have
:03:53. > :03:56.If you have got two big theatres with big overheads it is difficult
:03:57. > :04:03.to say that you will cover that from the box office.
:04:04. > :04:06.It was always going to need some sort of support.
:04:07. > :04:08.As a society we should be supporting the arts.
:04:09. > :04:15.If you go to other countries, they support the arts, phenomenally.
:04:16. > :04:18.The subsidy to support the theatres from the council was over ?300,000.
:04:19. > :04:20.The council says that it is facing financial pressure
:04:21. > :04:23.It would not comment further whilst the administration process
:04:24. > :04:25.is ongoing, leaving campaigners waiting for a verdict
:04:26. > :04:33.Well, North Devon MP Peter Heaton Jones has said throwing
:04:34. > :04:35.more public money at the theatres isn't the solution.
:04:36. > :04:40.Speaking earlier he called for the council, community
:04:41. > :04:43.and the theatres to come together to turn the situation around.
:04:44. > :04:46.Yes, it's got to be turned around, as one of the campaigners
:04:47. > :04:53.Both theatres are viable, firstly, but secondly,
:04:54. > :05:00.North Devon District Council doesn't have a bottomless pit of money.
:05:01. > :05:02.The council, by which we mean local taxpayers, have subsidised theatres
:05:03. > :05:06.to the tune of about ?3 million in the last six years.
:05:07. > :05:09.It's a lot of money, but in return, the theatre has to get
:05:10. > :05:11.people into the seats, they have to bring in productions
:05:12. > :05:17.Sadly, we have seen audiences reduced by about 20%,
:05:18. > :05:19.by about one fifth, recently, so the sums don't add
:05:20. > :05:25.We've got to try and work to make this deal happen.
:05:26. > :05:28.We had calls tonight for North Devon Council to be
:05:29. > :05:30.putting more money in. Do you think that's a viable option?
:05:31. > :05:35.North Devon Council doesn't have any money.
:05:36. > :05:40.And for that reason it has to watch every pound
:05:41. > :05:44.As I've said, the council has put in more than ?3 million
:05:45. > :05:48.That's a lot of money for a small local authority.
:05:49. > :05:51.But on the other side of the equation, theatres do have
:05:52. > :05:54.to be putting on performances that people want to come and see.
:05:55. > :06:00.And the days, I'm afraid, have gone where the solutions
:06:01. > :06:03.to these problems is to throw more public money at it.
:06:04. > :06:06.What I am urging everyone to do is get together round the table
:06:07. > :06:09.Should they be staging different shows?
:06:10. > :06:12.Is that one of the answers to getting people to go to the theatre?
:06:13. > :06:16.I couldn't answer that, but what I do know is that
:06:17. > :06:19.both theatres are viable. They are vital for the community.
:06:20. > :06:24.I've been to a number of events, not only performances and shows
:06:25. > :06:27.but also community meetings in both Ilfracombe and Barnstaple,
:06:28. > :06:29.and they are a vital part of the community and
:06:30. > :06:32.of the arts scene in North Devon. We have to save them both.
:06:33. > :06:36.I am urging everyone to get round the table
:06:37. > :06:39.to come up with a deal and if I, as the MP,
:06:40. > :06:43.can help in any way, my door open.
:06:44. > :06:46.People in Somerset may have to fork out more than ?10 million
:06:47. > :06:51.scheme which is more than two years behind schedule.
:06:52. > :06:55.No-one will even say when Taunton's new road will open.
:06:56. > :06:59.Clinton Rogers has this exclusive report.
:07:00. > :07:02.It remains the road to nowhere, already two years behind schedule,
:07:03. > :07:08.I think people are getting a bit fed up with it,
:07:09. > :07:16.That would sort them out, wouldn't it?
:07:17. > :07:29.The mile-long road on the northern side of Taunton is designed to ease
:07:30. > :07:31.congestion in a rapidly expanding town with its fair
:07:32. > :07:36.But this project has been beset by technical difficulties, not least
:07:37. > :07:38.over the construction of a new bridge.
:07:39. > :07:40.I'm telling them to get workers out here and get
:07:41. > :07:44.And this week for the first time the county council,
:07:45. > :07:46.which has already paid more than ?11 million
:07:47. > :07:57.We employed what we thought was a competent contractor to do this
:07:58. > :08:00.project a number of years ago and here we are in January 2017 and the
:08:01. > :08:02.road still is not open. Whenever this road finally
:08:03. > :08:05.does open, the question is - who is responsible
:08:06. > :08:07.for all the technical problems, all the delays and who is going
:08:08. > :08:10.to pick up the bill which The fact is, both sides
:08:11. > :08:14.are blaming one another, the council and the contractor,
:08:15. > :08:17.and it is a row that has become now a formal legal dispute and the loser
:08:18. > :08:24.could be faced with a very big bill indeed - I am told in
:08:25. > :08:29.excess of ?10 million. The contractor, Carillion,
:08:30. > :08:31.is refusing interviews The council is adamant -
:08:32. > :08:45.we're not paying a penny piece more. They want extra money -
:08:46. > :08:47.I'm not a charitable person, So now lawyers are involved
:08:48. > :08:54.in a dispute which could yet go to the courts and of course push up
:08:55. > :08:58.the final bill even higher Keepers at Paignton Zoo are helping
:08:59. > :09:09.the animals stay warm during the frosty nights by adding
:09:10. > :09:13.a mealtime favourite to their menu. The western lowland
:09:14. > :09:15.gorillas from Africa The zoo says it's one of the few
:09:16. > :09:20.things which will tempt them out Well time now to take a look
:09:21. > :09:25.at the weather and David has
:09:26. > :09:35.the forecast for us. Hello, good evening. After some
:09:36. > :09:40.quiet but cold weather over the last few days, it is beginning to change
:09:41. > :09:45.now with slightly more robberies developing tomorrow. Still a cold
:09:46. > :09:49.start some post and some sunshine to enjoy but more of a breeze and it
:09:50. > :09:54.will be a cold wind, too, with areas of low pressure out of the west
:09:55. > :09:59.squeezing those Acer bars. The winds will increase tomorrow afternoon,
:10:00. > :10:02.tomorrow night and into Thursday. Light winds overnight allow that
:10:03. > :10:06.mist and fog to reform other parts of eastern Somerset with the lowest
:10:07. > :10:12.temperatures SmackDown 2-1 and a fast possible elsewhere. Generally
:10:13. > :10:18.more of a breeze so less post than last night, and a better chance to
:10:19. > :10:23.see more sunshine on and off through the day. We should start to see
:10:24. > :10:29.temperatures recover up to maybe nine Celsius, the maximum. Quite a
:10:30. > :10:32.cool breeze developing along the South West coast of Cornwall. It is
:10:33. > :10:37.the South West wind we get on Thursday that brings across the
:10:38. > :10:43.channels on cold air. So quite a cold fuel to the day on Thursday.
:10:44. > :10:48.Daytime temperatures of five Celsius but given the wind chill it will
:10:49. > :10:52.feel more like -2, or minus three. Things to warm up towards the
:10:53. > :10:58.weekend but not without seeing some patchy rain on the way on Friday.
:10:59. > :11:01.Have a good night. That's all from the late team. Sleep well, and we
:11:02. > :11:02.will see you soon.
