:00:24. > :00:26.The Ministry of Defence is reported to be considering reducing

:00:27. > :00:29.the overall number of Marines, and removing the frontline role

:00:30. > :00:31.of one of its commando units, in response to a multi-billion pound

:00:32. > :00:34.Well, earlier this evening, Neil Gallacher was at

:00:35. > :00:39.Well, this latest concern has emerged in the form of the lead

:00:40. > :00:41.story in today's Times, which said the Armed Forces

:00:42. > :00:43.require further budget cuts to balance the books.

:00:44. > :00:47.It said at the brunt of those budget cuts are likely to be felt

:00:48. > :00:51.And the Royal Marines base that is likely to see the most

:00:52. > :00:55.significant change appears to be this a place, which is likely

:00:56. > :00:59.to lose its operational front line status and will instead become

:01:00. > :01:02.a support base, so doing things such as training and in the process,

:01:03. > :01:05.losing maybe 200 of its 600-700 Royal Marines personnel.

:01:06. > :01:10.Well, the Defence Secretary was given ample opportunity to deny

:01:11. > :01:21.It is noticeable that you are not saying that the size

:01:22. > :01:23.of the Royal Marines will not be cut.

:01:24. > :01:26.What I am saying to you is we have 7,000 Royal Marines

:01:27. > :01:29.and it is for the First Sea Lord, who runs the Royal Navy to look

:01:30. > :01:32.all the time at the balance of Marines and sailors,

:01:33. > :01:35.and I have not agreed any cut in in the size of the Royal Marines.

:01:36. > :01:39.Do we think this really is another serious cut on the way?

:01:40. > :01:42.We put that question to a Plymouth -based defence expert.

:01:43. > :01:49.It's like Christmas comes once a year and so does this story

:01:50. > :01:59.Possibly, this is it and they will take a hit and it

:02:00. > :02:02.will have no logic and it will damage the UK's defences,

:02:03. > :02:05.This has become an era of more or less continual change

:02:06. > :02:09.for the Armed Services and it seems as though the only thing we can say

:02:10. > :02:15.tonight with any certainty is that that change isn't over yet.

:03:11. > :03:14.The Trust says concerns over the high number of agency nurses,

:03:20. > :03:21.This weekend is the 30th anniversary of Cornwall's air ambulance.

:03:22. > :03:24.The charity has just announced plans to fund-raise for a new,

:03:25. > :03:28.The air ambulance is called out to around 700 emergencies per year.

:03:29. > :03:32.The Cornwall Air Ambulance's radio callsign has always

:03:33. > :03:35.been Heli-Med Zero One because it was the first air

:03:36. > :03:38.Today, the charity which runs it has two aircraft.

:03:39. > :03:40.They're paid for through charity donations from

:03:41. > :03:49.Today, there are 20 air Ambulance Services in Britain,

:03:50. > :03:55.In fact, Cornwall's was known as the first air ambulance.

:03:56. > :03:58.The service started on April 1st, 1987, the first ever call out

:03:59. > :04:05.Porthcurno Beach, a young lady had jumped off rocks, spinal injury.

:04:06. > :04:07.And from far West Cornwall, the air ambulance was able

:04:08. > :04:12.As we landed, she said this is a marvellous service,

:04:13. > :04:19.And Nigel, my colleague looked at his watch and said

:04:20. > :04:23.Since that first launch in 1987 Heli-Med Zero One have carried

:04:24. > :04:26.out 26,373 missions, saving lives and bringing help to

:04:27. > :04:46.A car stopped in the road in front of me and without any warning

:04:47. > :04:49.he crossed the road, hit me, ran over me, literally.

:04:50. > :04:51.The next thing I know, I'm being airlifted.

:04:52. > :04:55.If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be here.

:04:56. > :04:59.The focus for the charity now is to replace this aircraft

:05:00. > :05:20.with new ones that are bigger, faster, and can operate at night.

:05:21. > :05:27.Disability groups say new parking charges due to come in in Plymouth

:05:28. > :05:34.will put people's life in -- safety at risk. The local authority says it

:05:35. > :05:37.has carried out a full public consultation on the plans but there

:05:38. > :05:40.are concerns that the council has rushed through the changes without

:05:41. > :05:41.ensuring all meters are safe to access.

:05:42. > :05:43.An 11-year-old Devon schoolboy completed his

:05:44. > :05:46.unique charity challenge at Newton Abbot racecourse tonight.

:05:47. > :05:49.James Clarkson has spent all week running around every National Hunt

:05:50. > :05:55.That's 34 courses and about 50 miles in distance on challenging ground.

:05:56. > :06:04.So far he's raised ?10,000 for the Injured Jockeys Fund.

:06:27. > :06:30.One weather front giving us rain tonight will move away and we're

:06:31. > :06:35.left with an area of low pressure, which means plenty of showers

:06:36. > :06:38.to come as we move through the day on Saturday tomorrow.

:06:39. > :06:41.By the time we get to Sunday all of that will have

:06:42. > :06:44.But some this rain this evening could turn out to be

:06:45. > :06:47.quite heavy in places, moving pretty fast and eventually it

:06:48. > :06:51.What will be left is a scattering of showers, some clear skies

:06:52. > :06:53.and temperatures no lower than between seven and 9 degrees.

:06:54. > :06:55.Tomorrow we should get some sunshine, especially around

:06:56. > :06:58.the coast and for the islands, but I think inland the showers

:06:59. > :07:01.could well be heavy, with the risk of hail and thunder.

:07:02. > :07:08.11 or 12 degrees will be the maximum temperature with the winds

:07:09. > :07:13.As we move into Sunday it is a completely different story.

:07:14. > :07:16.Sunday should be a fine and dry day with light winds

:07:17. > :07:21.The outlook as we move into next week is for some settled weather

:07:22. > :07:24.and just a bit of patchy rain Monday night and into Tuesday.
