:02:25. > :02:26.Marine litter and discarded fishing gear has been blamed for killing
:02:27. > :02:32.But now the fishermen are working with charities and other industries
:02:33. > :02:36.to tackle the problem as Eleanor Parkinson reports.

:02:39. > :02:44.They have to sift through their catch to get rid of the rubbish
:02:45. > :02:47.but they're not throwing it back overboard.
:02:48. > :02:50.Instead, they put it in special sacks they've been given
:02:51. > :02:53.and they bring it all back to port to put in a dedicated skip.
:02:54. > :02:57.We bring in about two one-tonne bags every trip.
:02:58. > :03:00.I do a six-day trip and I bring in two one-tonne bags a week.
:03:01. > :03:03.And these are the bags that we give the fishing boats.
:03:04. > :03:06.And if you look through the skip, you can find just about anything.
:03:07. > :03:08.Somebody obviously not needing a kettle.
:03:09. > :03:11.The bags on the boats are provided by a project
:03:12. > :03:17.It's dangerous to be left in the sea, it's not good
:03:18. > :03:19.for the marine environment and they are more than
:03:20. > :03:24.The fishermen are also working hard to prevent ghost gear -
:03:25. > :03:26.broken nets and ropes getting left at sea.
:03:27. > :03:32.They see a bit of ghost gear floating in a water
:03:33. > :03:38.So they swim over it, round it, under it, through it.
:03:39. > :03:40.And it's the through it that gets them into trouble.
:03:41. > :03:43.These nylon nets won't be thrown away.
:03:44. > :03:46.They'll be recycled. They'll be sent to a factory
:03:47. > :03:49.in Eastern Europe, where they'll be turned into nylon carpets.
:03:50. > :03:51.And a Cornish company are using the recycled nylon
:03:52. > :03:58.We make the range of swimwear and rash guards that
:03:59. > :04:01.are particularly aimed at active watersport use, either wearing them
:04:02. > :04:05.under wet suits or jumping around, moving in the water.
:04:06. > :04:08.In the south-west, attitudes to marine litter are changing
:04:09. > :04:12.but the threat still exists from other shores.
:04:13. > :04:15.Ghost gear is often brought up into our seas on the Gulf Stream.
:04:16. > :04:19.For the fishermen and the volunteers, their work continues.
:04:20. > :04:23.Double Olympic gold medal winner Helen Glover from Penzance
