:00:27. > :00:29.one party which won't be appearing on the ballot paper is the Cornish
:00:30. > :00:37.Approaching 70 years in business, back in its early days as a pressure
:00:38. > :00:39.group signing up to Mebyon Kernow was apparently seen as the thing
:00:40. > :00:45.to do, attracting names like Daphne du Maurier.
:00:46. > :00:48.With a key message of a national assembly for Cornwall,
:00:49. > :00:53.any electoral success has only been at local council level.
:00:54. > :00:55.Since the 1970s the party for Cornwall has been fielding
:00:56. > :01:01.But not this time, a decision based on the snap election,
:01:02. > :01:07.It is extremely frustrating, we want to put our message out
:01:08. > :01:10.there for the people of Cornwall but do it in a fair way
:01:11. > :01:13.and when we are told when the election will be
:01:14. > :01:16.and when it is suddenly moved forward three years with no notice,
:01:17. > :01:29.it makes a nonsense of democracy for smaller parties.
:01:30. > :01:33.This is the heart of Cornwall's clay country where Mebyon Kernow won
:01:34. > :01:35.the popular vote at the local elections and returned two out
:01:36. > :01:38.of its four Cornwall councillors, But at the general election it has
:01:39. > :01:42.It fielded a full slate of six candidates that lost
:01:43. > :01:53.What is the point in standing in the general election anyway?
:01:54. > :01:56.Just because people don't vote for us at general elections does not
:01:57. > :02:00.mean they do not like what we stand for, but this time it just wasn't
:02:01. > :02:03.practical for us to put forward a really strong campaign in such
:02:04. > :02:13.It is not just Mebyon Kernow stepping away, here in Cornwall UKIP
:02:14. > :02:15.are only fielding one candidate and that is in Truro
:02:16. > :02:17.and Falmouth where there was a Remain Conservative MP
:02:18. > :02:21.and the Greens are only fielding in some places, and not in St Ives
:02:22. > :02:23.where it is the most marginal seat in the battle between
:02:24. > :02:32.What do voters think about having less choice at the ballot box?
:02:33. > :02:35.It is good to have a strong opposition and the only way to get
:02:36. > :02:37.the strong opposition is if it is one of the major parties
:02:38. > :02:40.and I don't think that the major parties should lose votes
:02:41. > :02:47.There are a lot of important issues at stake, so it is better just
:02:48. > :02:56.It is a pity that some people had fought for the people
:02:57. > :03:00.Mebyon Kernow's leader said it is not the end of the party
:03:01. > :03:02.contesting seats in general elections and the aim
:03:03. > :03:08.is to keep the other parties on their toes in the meantime.
:03:09. > :03:13.Well, our political editor Martyn Oates joins me now.
:03:14. > :03:16.A surprise to see Mebyon Kernow bowing out of this general
:03:17. > :03:22.Yes, and as Tamsin said, in the last two elections they stood
:03:23. > :03:25.in every seat in Cornwall, which they hadn't previously done,
:03:26. > :03:28.so to go from six seats to zero is a bit of a shock
:03:29. > :03:30.and it is probably a little-known fact that although,
:03:31. > :03:33.as Tamsin has pointed out, their track record in general
:03:34. > :03:35.elections isn't great, that MK members have actually
:03:36. > :03:37.in the past been elected to Parliament and that is
:03:38. > :03:40.because in the early days, and we saw some memorabilia there
:03:41. > :03:43.from the start of the movement, it was a very broad-based
:03:44. > :03:48.It was possible for instance to be a prominent Conservative or Liberal
:03:49. > :03:56.politician and also a member of MK and people were.
:03:57. > :03:58.Interesting to see other parties making the strategic withdrawals
:03:59. > :04:09.Yes, this has emerged I think as one of the big stories
:04:10. > :04:12.of the campaign so far and it began here in the South West.
:04:13. > :04:15.Just to come back to MK, they have been clear that
:04:16. > :04:17.in an outstanding candidates they are not thereby endorsing
:04:18. > :04:21.The opposite is the case when it comes to UKIP and the Greens.
:04:22. > :04:23.In UKIP's case they are deciding clearly quits strategically
:04:24. > :04:26.they won't oppose conservative candidates whom they consider to be
:04:27. > :04:34.sound enough Brexiteers, people who campaigned to leave
:04:35. > :04:37.the EU during the referendum, campaigned last year and as some
:04:38. > :04:40.of these people in UKIP have pointed out campaigned alongside some
:04:41. > :04:42.of the people who might otherwise have been their opponents
:04:43. > :04:50.They are of those standing against Conservatives who campaigned
:04:51. > :04:58.The Greens are doing a very similar thing from the opposite side
:04:59. > :05:01.They are targeting constituencies like St Ive's where the conservative
:05:02. > :05:04.candidate won by a narrow margin and by not standing in the Greens
:05:05. > :05:07.are hoping to reduce the otherwise fractured opposition to the Tory
:05:08. > :05:12.to try to remove him or her at this election.
:05:13. > :05:14.That's what the parties want the electorate to do.
:05:15. > :05:24.Whether they will of course is the different question.
:05:25. > :05:27.And what we do know, if we look at UKIP for instance,
:05:28. > :05:31.that it is a very lazy and false assumption to say that the UKIP vote
:05:32. > :05:33.always comes from the Tories and goes back to the Tories.
:05:34. > :05:36.And in fact one Conservative candidate said he hopes that UKIP do
:05:37. > :05:39.stand in his constituency, because if they don't he is worried
:05:40. > :05:45.that those votes will go back to the Lib Dems.
