:00:10. > :00:10.Good afternoon. That's all from the BBC news.

:00:11. > :00:14.The police say women from Central and Eastern Europe are being forced

:00:15. > :00:16.into sexual slavery in a rising number of so-called pop-up brothels

:00:17. > :00:24.14 have appeared in one Cornish town alone since last July.

:00:25. > :00:28.From Newquay, Denis Nightingale reports.

:00:29. > :00:35.One evening, a man came knocking at a guesthouse door.

:00:36. > :00:38.Basically asked me how much I charged assuming

:00:39. > :00:43.that I was part of it, and I just told him to go away.

:00:44. > :00:45.And what did you think of that when it happened?

:00:46. > :00:51.It was the first indication Ellen had that there was a brothel

:00:52. > :00:54.where three women were working just two doors down from her.

:00:55. > :01:00.It was one of 14 brothels in the town discovered since last July.

:01:01. > :01:05.I didn't realise it was that number and of course that is 14 too many.

:01:06. > :01:08.As a town, we wouldn't want people to associate Newquay

:01:09. > :01:14.A search of sites on the internet shows many of the pop-ups appear

:01:15. > :01:19.to be staffed by women from Central and Eastern Europe.

:01:20. > :01:22.The police say they treat the women as victims but they say they can't

:01:23. > :01:25.allow the pop-ups across Cornwall and Devon to stay open.

:01:26. > :01:29.We couldn't condone the running of a brothel and a lot of the pop-up

:01:30. > :01:32.brothels are in summer lets and rental apartments

:01:33. > :01:34.and we are duty bound to inform the owner of what's

:01:35. > :01:40.Inspector Meredith says it won't be easy tracking down the international

:01:41. > :01:42.gangs behind the sex trafficking, but he says the police

:01:43. > :01:49.We are safeguarding the women that are in these pop-up brothels.

:01:50. > :01:52.One of our drives is to gather intelligence and from gathering

:01:53. > :01:55.intelligence that would give us, one, a picture to find out what's

:01:56. > :01:57.going on and help us to scope the nature of the problem,

:01:58. > :02:00.but, two, to help formulate the proactive operations

:02:01. > :02:05.against persons that are behind modern slavery and sex trafficking.

:02:06. > :02:09.For Ellen, the local community must be protected.

:02:10. > :02:14.This road has got quite a few children in it.

:02:15. > :02:20.Also, being a guesthouse, I have guests who I feel I have to protect.

:02:21. > :02:29.Campaigners calling for improved rail services and cheaper fares say

:02:30. > :02:33.the region is being treated as the end of the line.

:02:34. > :02:37.The Trades Union backed Action for Rail were at stations today

:02:38. > :02:40.calling on passengers to join their fight.

:02:41. > :02:43.They say fares need to be cut rather than increased.

:02:44. > :02:49.A train coming down the line from London this morning.

:02:50. > :02:53.But for the passengers on it, the prices have gone up.

:02:54. > :02:57.The average rise of more than 2% came into force yesterday.

:02:58. > :02:58.That sees an any-time return from Birmingham

:02:59. > :03:04.And 20 pence has been added to a day-return

:03:05. > :03:09.I think they've always been too expensive in England.

:03:10. > :03:14.I come back every now and then, and it always strikes me how

:03:15. > :03:16.expensive the train fares are in England.

:03:17. > :03:25.It would probably cost me more in car fares, in petrol.

:03:26. > :03:27.Passengers arriving at Exeter St Davids this morning

:03:28. > :03:32.were met by these campaigners who are pushing for a better deal.

:03:33. > :03:37.We need a second route via Oakhampton.

:03:38. > :03:41.We need more work to be done on the Dawlish seawall.

:03:42. > :03:43.We need more investment into Cornwall.

:03:44. > :03:46.We need better infrastructure in the south-west.

:03:47. > :03:53.I checked a few moments ago to see how much it would cost

:03:54. > :04:00.And if you say, what about booking in advance?

:04:01. > :04:03.I checked the same train for a month's time.

:04:04. > :04:08.The government says those fares are funding record investment.

:04:09. > :04:14.Campaigners though are challenging it to show that's

:04:15. > :04:21.Now a round up of other news this lunchtime.

:04:22. > :04:23.Christopher Tester, who was shot in the head during a robbery

:04:24. > :04:26.at his parents' restaurant in Antigua, is back in the UK

:04:27. > :04:31.after a public appeal to raise money to fly him home.

:04:32. > :04:34.The 37-year-old from Torquay landed at Exeter late last night.

:04:35. > :04:37.He is now in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

:04:38. > :04:40.Police have issued this photo of a 76-year-old man who has been

:04:41. > :04:42.missing from Bideford since New Year's Day.

:04:43. > :04:44.They say they are extremely concerned for Clive

:04:45. > :04:49.Officers, police dogs, the force helicopter and coastguards

:04:50. > :04:55.He is thought to be wearing dark clothes and a dark woolly hat.

:04:56. > :04:58.The Somerset-based explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes is setting off

:04:59. > :05:01.to climb the world's second highest mountain.

:05:02. > :05:03.His trek to the top of Mount Aconcagua in Argentina

:05:04. > :05:07.is part of a challenge to become the first person to cross both polar

:05:08. > :05:13.ice caps and climb the highest mountain on each continent.

:05:14. > :05:15.Now the prospect of reopening a old mine in an Area

:05:16. > :05:18.of Outstanding Natural Beauty might not be appealing

:05:19. > :05:21.to many communities, but in East Cornwall the idea

:05:22. > :05:24.appears to have received a surprising reaction.

:05:25. > :05:27.As our business correspondent Neil Gallacher explains,

:05:28. > :05:29.the local mayor says that if the plan doesn't come

:05:30. > :05:36.to fruition, people might even be disappointed.

:05:37. > :05:40.Not much remains of the old Redmoor mine on the edge of Callington

:05:41. > :05:43.but there's a lot of tin here and if tin prices keep

:05:44. > :05:48.rising it may become economic to dig it out.

:05:49. > :05:50.Mining specialists have been consulting on plans

:05:51. > :05:54.First reactions locally have been quite positive.

:05:55. > :05:57.Kelly Bray is crying out for regeneration.

:05:58. > :06:02.It will be wonderful if new jobs were brought in and also new people

:06:03. > :06:05.We all bought knowing that there is mining happening,

:06:06. > :06:08.in the area, or was happening in the area, so it's not

:06:09. > :06:13.Cornwall historically is a mining county.

:06:14. > :06:19.So, from that point of view, very, very positive and obviously

:06:20. > :06:23.people are concerned, as we are.

:06:24. > :06:25.You've still got to take into account residents' concerns

:06:26. > :06:28.and the environmental impact but we've been assured

:06:29. > :06:32.by Cornwall Resources that this will be managed correctly

:06:33. > :06:35.and obviously we will be keeping an eye on that as part

:06:36. > :06:40.Those involved with the scheme say a mine would have less impact

:06:41. > :06:43.on the village of Kelly Bray than was seen at Hemerdon

:06:44. > :06:46.near Plymouth where a tungsten mine restarted.

:06:47. > :06:48.This would be a very different mining operation to Hamerdon.

:06:49. > :06:53.Although the deposit is close to the southern part of Kelly Bray,

:06:54. > :06:56.we would be looking to site any processing plant or waste tips some

:06:57. > :07:03.distance away to minimise the impact on local residents and communities.

:07:04. > :07:10.It would also be tens of millions of pounds to be

:07:11. > :07:27.A bright but cold start to the day. A really cold start, yes. A lovely

:07:28. > :07:34.start, gorgeous start for many of us. We have this lovely photo. Blue

:07:35. > :07:38.skies. This is across true row. With those clear skies overnight, it

:07:39. > :07:46.meant that frosty start to things. Exeter Airport, the coldest spot in

:07:47. > :07:50.the country, minus seven degrees. Tonight, patchy frost but not as

:07:51. > :07:54.cold. It's thanks to the high pressure in charge. It's given us

:07:55. > :07:58.sunshine today but unfortunately, we have a weather front for tomorrow.

:07:59. > :08:03.It is a weak affair but it pushes in more cloud. Through the afternoon,

:08:04. > :08:12.for most of us, lovely and bright. Cloud in Somerset but staying dry

:08:13. > :08:18.food as afternoon, 6-7. The breeze picks up a bit as well. -- this

:08:19. > :08:23.afternoon. Rain across Exmoor and Dartmoor. Hill fog here and there. A

:08:24. > :08:28.touch of frost for tonight. These are typical low temperatures. Not as

:08:29. > :08:34.cold as the night just gone. Wednesday morning, cloudy note, a

:08:35. > :08:38.bit of rain here and there. Largely dry. A few bright spells but they

:08:39. > :08:44.will be in short supply tomorrow. The best chance across Somerset and

:08:45. > :08:47.Dorset later on in the afternoon. Temperatures a shade higher. When

:08:48. > :08:52.you factor in the cloud, it probably won't feel that much milder. For the

:08:53. > :08:57.Channel Islands, a cloudy picture for tomorrow. A little bit of rain

:08:58. > :09:00.in the next, not too much. A breezy day than today, as well, and it's

:09:01. > :09:04.not the most inspiring look to things over the next few days.

:09:05. > :09:07.Mostly dry with rain moving in on Friday afternoon but hopefully

:09:08. > :09:09.turning dryer once again as a move into the weekend. Thank you very

:09:10. > :09:11.much. I'll be back with Victoria Graham

:09:12. > :09:14.in Spotlight tonight at 6.30. But from the lunchtime news,

:09:15. > :09:17.have a very good afternoon. Panorama investigates

:09:18. > :09:50.the deadly terrorist attack and should British tourists

:09:51. > :09:54.have been warned about the risks?
