:01:40. > :01:49.but, as statements of intent go, it is a serious one.

:02:46. > :02:52.Volunteers at the Bude Lifeboat station have been taking advantage

:02:53. > :02:54.of the sea conditions to build up the essential skills required

:02:55. > :03:03.These are perfect conditions for what this training

:03:04. > :03:08.Lifeboat crew have to be good in surf like this

:03:09. > :03:16.if they are to operate on the north coast.

:03:17. > :03:19.These training boats have regular crew members working their way up

:03:20. > :03:21.to helmsman and also some of the RNLI's newest recruits.

:03:22. > :03:23.It's a really good training opportunity.

:03:24. > :03:29.The first time, it's quite tough, holding on for dear life but then

:03:30. > :03:33.they show you the right manoeuvres to do and it's all good.

:03:34. > :03:36.It takes about a year before a trainee goes on a proper shout.

:03:37. > :03:41.Three years before they can be considered properly qualified.

:03:42. > :03:43.When lives at stake, trust amongst the crew

:03:44. > :03:53.There's only a handful of lifeboat stations around

:03:54. > :03:55.the country that are like this, which launch from the beach.

:03:56. > :03:59.Right around the country, the sea can be dangerously

:04:00. > :04:01.unpredictable but in North Cornwall, we would say that our surf

:04:02. > :04:05.It's a beautiful place to be, but you have

:04:06. > :04:09.Our lifeboat crew have to learn how to operate small boats

:04:10. > :04:17.It's not something that they can do safely at all times,

:04:18. > :04:25.so we've laid on today to allow the newer people to learn

:04:26. > :04:28.from the more experienced crew here and gradually throughout

:04:29. > :04:32.While all this has been going on, the regular crew was ready

:04:33. > :04:37.and waiting just in case there was a real shout.
