:01:21. > :01:26.The reason it might be worth it is that tin is worth

:01:27. > :01:30.six times what it was when the mine shut in 1998.

:01:31. > :01:32.All the various attempts to restart mining at Crofty

:01:33. > :01:38.In 19 years of attempts to restart South Crofty,

:01:39. > :01:44.this milestone is the farthest anyone has yet got.

:01:45. > :01:46.It doesn't guarantee the mine will reopen - far from it -

:01:47. > :01:59.but, as statements of intent go, it is a serious one.

:02:00. > :02:01.Work on a ?14 million scheme to protect Dawlish Warren

:02:02. > :02:03.from rising sea levels is now well underway.

:02:04. > :02:06.Many of the existing hard defences have already been removed

:02:07. > :02:08.and new timber groynes are being installed along the beach.

:02:09. > :02:12.The ambitious project aims to protect the Exe Estuary

:02:13. > :02:16.and the nearby main rail line from storms.

:02:17. > :02:19.Meanwhile, lifeboat crew members in North Cornwall have been training

:02:20. > :02:20.in heavy surf this weekend in preparation

:02:21. > :02:27.Volunteers at the Bude Lifeboat station have been taking advantage

:02:28. > :02:30.of the sea conditions to build up the essential skills required

:02:31. > :02:38.These are perfect conditions for what this training

:02:39. > :02:43.Lifeboat crew have to be good in surf like this

:02:44. > :02:45.if they are to operate on the north coast.

:02:46. > :02:48.These training boats have regular crew members working their way up

:02:49. > :02:55.to helmsman, and also some of the RNLI's newest recruits.

:02:56. > :02:56.It's a really good training opportunity.

:02:57. > :03:02.The first time, it's quite tough, holding on for dear life but then

:03:03. > :03:06.they show you the right manoeuvres to do, and it's all good.

:03:07. > :03:09.It takes about a year before a trainee goes on a proper shout.

:03:10. > :03:11.Three years before they can be considered properly qualified.

:03:12. > :03:14.When lives are at stake, trust amongst the crew

:03:15. > :03:17.There's only a handful of lifeboat stations around

:03:18. > :03:22.the country that are like this, which launch from the beach.

:03:23. > :03:24.Our lifeboat crew have to learn how to operate small boats

:03:25. > :03:33.It's not something that they can do safely at all times,

:03:34. > :03:37.so we've laid on today to allow the newer people to learn

:03:38. > :03:38.from the more experienced crew here

:03:39. > :03:42.and gradually, throughout the day, build up their experience.

:03:43. > :03:46.While all this has been going on, the regular crew was ready

:03:47. > :03:54.and waiting, just in case there was a real shout.

:04:07. > :04:10.Low in places, we've got some hill fog, some mist,

:04:11. > :04:13.The odd spot of drizzle, but mainly dry.

:04:14. > :04:16.Some of that low cloud and fog could be quite dense

:04:17. > :04:19.A very mild night, with the temperature values

:04:20. > :04:21.you would expect by day, so overnight tonight,

:04:22. > :04:23.no frost and lows of around eight Celsius.

:04:24. > :04:24.That low cloud could be stubborn to clear,

:04:25. > :04:27.like the last few mornings, and some of it even

:04:28. > :04:30.The odd spot of drizzle, but as the winds pick up

:04:31. > :04:33.during the day, that should break a few holes in the cloud.

:04:34. > :04:36.So I think there will be some brightness, particularly to the east

:04:37. > :04:39.of any higher ground and we're looking at a very mild day

:04:40. > :04:41.with temperatures of around 13 degrees.

:04:42. > :04:43.Mild for the first part of this week but noticeably windier
