:00:12. > :00:14.Police are treating a huge fire which ripped through a 16th-century

:00:15. > :00:19.stately home in Dorset early this morning as suspicious.

:00:20. > :00:24.No-one is thought to have been inside Parnham House

:00:25. > :00:28.near Beaminster, but the building, which is described as of exceptional

:00:29. > :00:30.historic importance, has been severely damaged.

:00:31. > :00:32.Today one of its famous former owners has been

:00:33. > :00:34.speaking to Clare Woodling, who's just sent this

:00:35. > :00:41.Hundreds of years of history, up in flames.

:00:42. > :00:46.The alarm was raised at 4:10 this morning.

:00:47. > :00:49.20 fire engines were sent to the scene, half a mile

:00:50. > :00:53.They described it as an extensive blaze.

:00:54. > :01:04.Of course we were terrified of fire because houses like that

:01:05. > :01:07.have so often suffered in that way, and we did have a small chimney fire

:01:08. > :01:10.and that in itself was dreadful, but of course the scale of this

:01:11. > :01:13.It was heart-stoppingly beautiful and it's just utterly

:01:14. > :01:17.I mean, it seems very sad that somebody who made it

:01:18. > :01:19.into a beautiful private home could have suffered such tragedy.

:01:20. > :01:22.Crews were still battling the fire at lunchtime.

:01:23. > :01:25.By the mid-afternoon they were damping down.

:01:26. > :01:28.Onlookers gathered to find out what remains of the building

:01:29. > :01:30.but there was little to see, only the smell of smoke.

:01:31. > :01:35.I had my wedding reception there and it was the gardens,

:01:36. > :01:38.it was an outside wedding and it was all in the gardens

:01:39. > :01:41.How do you feel finding out about the fire?

:01:42. > :01:44.Terribly sad and terribly sad for the owners.

:01:45. > :01:46.I don't know the owners but it's devastating.

:01:47. > :01:52.There's no access into the grounds at Parnham House except

:01:53. > :02:06.Police say the fire is suspicious and investigations are under way.

:02:07. > :02:09.Tourism leaders believe ?200 million will be spent in the South West
