0:00:03 > 0:00:04Hello. We're reasonably happy about

0:00:04 > 0:00:07the general weather theme through the next week or so.

0:00:07 > 0:00:09Detail towards the weekend and beyond,

0:00:09 > 0:00:11a little more elusive perhaps.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12But at the moment, this is how

0:00:12 > 0:00:14the pressure pattern's looking.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16Low pressure to the North of the UK,

0:00:16 > 0:00:18high pressure away towards the Southwest -

0:00:18 > 0:00:22not an unusual pattern for the latter part of July.

0:00:22 > 0:00:23But areas of low pressure

0:00:23 > 0:00:25across this part of the world

0:00:25 > 0:00:27steered by the jet stream -

0:00:27 > 0:00:30that high-level river of fast-moving air.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31Up until recently, the jet stream's

0:00:31 > 0:00:33been well to the North of the UK.

0:00:33 > 0:00:34That allowed that very warm air

0:00:34 > 0:00:37to come up from the Mediterranean regions from the South.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Now the jet stream is beginning to sink

0:00:39 > 0:00:43further southwards, that opens the door to cooler Atlantic air

0:00:43 > 0:00:46to move in and for those low-pressure systems to come further South.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48The big question at the moment is just how far South

0:00:48 > 0:00:53the jet is going to go over the next five or six days?

0:00:53 > 0:00:56That has an impact, of course, on the forecast.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57In the shorter term, at lower levels

0:00:57 > 0:00:59the wind's pushing in from the West

0:00:59 > 0:01:02and quite briskly again on Wednesday across Scotland,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04Northern Ireland, Northern parts of England,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06bringing a scattering of showers.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07A little more unstable the air

0:01:07 > 0:01:09as it's closer to that area of low pressure.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Come further South and it's a rather drier story.

0:01:12 > 0:01:13Certainly feeling on the cool side

0:01:13 > 0:01:14in that brisk breeze.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Temperatures 17 degrees at best

0:01:16 > 0:01:17across many parts of Scotland.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Eastern Scotland rather warmer

0:01:19 > 0:01:22with some shelter from that wind to the East of the Grampians.

0:01:22 > 0:01:23Come further South and there will be

0:01:23 > 0:01:26a fair bit of cloud around through the afternoon.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28These sort of temperatures - 18 to 22 -

0:01:28 > 0:01:30about average for this time of year.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Up to 23 or 24 across Southeastern parts.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Not quite as high as recent days

0:01:35 > 0:01:37but still a respectable temperature

0:01:37 > 0:01:39for the latter part of July.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Thursday is a very similar picture.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45Perhaps some heavier showers around across Northern areas.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Again breezy but the stronger winds may be edging a little

0:01:48 > 0:01:50bit further Southwards but very similar temperatures -

0:01:50 > 0:01:53mid to high teens in the North,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55low to mid-20s in the South.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57So what happens beyond that?

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Well, Thursday through into Friday

0:01:59 > 0:02:00you can start to see

0:02:00 > 0:02:03the low-pressure system, not very well formed,

0:02:03 > 0:02:07definitely sinking that bit further Southwards

0:02:07 > 0:02:09as high pressure withdraws into

0:02:09 > 0:02:11the Western parts of the Atlantic.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13So a more unsettled look to things generally.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Detail beginning to get a little tricky by this time.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19We're talking about a mix of sunny intervals

0:02:19 > 0:02:21and scattered showers,

0:02:21 > 0:02:22brisk winds perhaps in the South

0:02:22 > 0:02:23rather than in the North -,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25closer to the centre of that low -

0:02:25 > 0:02:27very similar temperatures.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28Then we go into the weekend.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30The best indication at the moment

0:02:30 > 0:02:32is that, as far as showers are concerned,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Saturday is more likely to see

0:02:34 > 0:02:36rather more in the way of showers.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Still some brightness in-between those

0:02:38 > 0:02:39but if we do catch a shower

0:02:39 > 0:02:41it could be on the heavy side.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43For Sunday, the threat of the showers

0:02:43 > 0:02:44beginning to move away

0:02:44 > 0:02:46to some extent, pushing away towards the East

0:02:46 > 0:02:48allowing more in the way of

0:02:48 > 0:02:49dry and bright weather to develop.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51And again similar temperatures -

0:02:51 > 0:02:5217 to 18 in the North,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54to around the low to mid-20s in the South.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Certainly don't write off summer yet, that has to be the message.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Looking further ahead, through the first week of August,

0:03:00 > 0:03:01cooler than recently.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03We've had some very high temperatures in many places.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Still a bit of sunshine around at times

0:03:05 > 0:03:07but we still have to cater for

0:03:07 > 0:03:11some outbreaks of rain, perhaps more particularly across Northern areas.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12With low pressure in the frame,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15it could be quite breezy at times as well.

0:03:15 > 0:03:16But it will all depend,

0:03:16 > 0:03:17thanks to the jet stream,

0:03:17 > 0:03:18on the exact position of

0:03:18 > 0:03:19these areas of low pressure.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21High pressure to the South.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Just how much that moves North and South

0:03:23 > 0:03:25will have a big influence on

0:03:25 > 0:03:27exactly what sort of weather we can expect.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29So a little bit mixed through the weekend and beyond.
