0:00:03 > 0:00:06Good evening. This time yesterday, Matt was telling you

0:00:06 > 0:00:10about our first major storm of the season, which has been named Abigail.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12We're naming, this season,

0:00:12 > 0:00:16for those storms which we expect to have a significant impact on the UK.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19And so we're firming up on details and since yesterday

0:00:19 > 0:00:21the warning has been escalated to an amber by the Met Office.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24You can see how ferocious that low pressure looks towards the north

0:00:24 > 0:00:27and west of Scotland - really tightly-packed isobars -

0:00:27 > 0:00:30so the winds are giving us real cause for concern.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31The lack of wind, though, overnight,

0:00:31 > 0:00:34means an unusually chilly start for the glens of Scotland -

0:00:34 > 0:00:36a touch of frost here, some mist and fog elsewhere.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39But actually, the day is shaping up to be quite a decent one

0:00:39 > 0:00:42across central and eastern areas - the calm before the storm.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45These winds that you see in the black discs indicate the gusts of wind,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48already getting up to 50 or 60mph through

0:00:48 > 0:00:50the Irish Sea into the afternoon.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53So gales, or severe gales, starting to develop,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56and coupled with that rain, some pretty miserable conditions

0:00:56 > 0:00:58for a time if you're driving in that spell of rain.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01It should move through quite quickly, giving us

0:01:01 > 0:01:03another 10-20mm of rain for most of us.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07But it's behind that rain band as it's moved out the way that

0:01:07 > 0:01:10the winds escalate further.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Really very strong winds indeed - violent winds, potentially.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Storm force across the far north and west of Scotland,

0:01:16 > 0:01:19hence the amber warning of gusts in excess of 80mph.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23But actually, even the Central Lowlands could have gusts of 60,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25possibly 70mph in the far north of Northern Ireland.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Enough to cause disruption to transport and power lines as well

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and perhaps some structural damage, certainly in the far north.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Then, as it clears away,

0:01:33 > 0:01:37its parting present is a spell of colder weather, just temporarily.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Still blowing a gale on Friday across most of the UK and storm-force winds

0:01:41 > 0:01:45battering the north and bringing with them some really chilly air.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47So it may feel like 7-13 on the thermometer -

0:01:47 > 0:01:49rather, it may say that - but it will feel a lot colder.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52And it will be cold enough for a smattering of snow,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54potentially, on the Pennines in Cumbria.

0:01:54 > 0:01:55It shouldn't stick, though.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Now, behind me we've also got another lump of cloud that we're watching.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01This one here is Abigail, the one behind me

0:02:01 > 0:02:02is Hurricane Kate currently.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06It will weaken significantly before it comes to the shores of the UK but

0:02:06 > 0:02:10that's the next area of low pressure, if you like, that we're watching.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12This is Abigail moving across to Scandinavia.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16As we move into Saturday, we say hello again to low pressure.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Slightly milder conditions again coming in from the south

0:02:19 > 0:02:22and west, those winds, but an awful lot of rain.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Because it's of tropical origin, it will have a lot of moisture

0:02:25 > 0:02:27and energy in there to give us some windy weather,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30but the rain is going to cause real concern.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32It has been so wet this week - we've already had flooding issues,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34river levels are high,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36so we need to really watch that on Saturday and Sunday.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40That's after we've been battered by Abigail and had some rain from that,

0:02:40 > 0:02:44because that weather front is still meandering around again on Sunday.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48It looks like central northern areas will bear the brunt of that rain,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51but obviously open to some uncertainty.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Now, that area of low pressure then moves away again into Monday

0:02:54 > 0:02:56and its trailing weather front moves southwards,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59so temporarily it'll turn just a bit chillier,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02but drier and brighter to the north of that weather front.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06And that's a trend that we're going to see continuing into next week.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09So, by and large it remains unsettled.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11We've got the jet stream,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13those fast-blowing winds in the upper atmosphere which drive

0:03:13 > 0:03:16the weather systems from west to east, generally, sat right above us.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19So we can expect further spells of wet and windy weather,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22but just occasionally some colder air will start to drift

0:03:22 > 0:03:24across the northern half of the country.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28But for most of us, for most of the time, it remains mild.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31There's more details on that storm on the website.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36# These streets are yours You can keep them... #

0:03:36 > 0:03:39You wouldn't have found a doctor down here before.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Or a banker.

0:03:41 > 0:03:47There's no reason this bonus might not be closer to TWO million.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49I think you need me to come and speak to the police

0:03:49 > 0:03:52about those abusive postcards you told me about.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54I don't think anyone would want what I have.
