0:00:03 > 0:00:05Snow. If ever there's a word to gain maximum interest

0:00:05 > 0:00:07at the start of a forecast, it's that one,

0:00:07 > 0:00:10and, given the weather we have had recently,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13snow may not be the first thing you are expecting me to talk about.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16However, this is the forecast that looks further ahead than the others,

0:00:16 > 0:00:20and by next weekend, it looks like we are going to be in air cold enough to

0:00:20 > 0:00:25produce snow and for some of us, the first snow we've seen this season.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29But, until then, it's proper autumn weather still in control.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32More wet and windy weather to come and that's

0:00:32 > 0:00:34because we've got an active jet stream driving in these

0:00:34 > 0:00:37areas of low pressure across the Atlantic towards us.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41One for Monday, one for Tuesday, another for Wednesday

0:00:41 > 0:00:43and one always quite close by to northern Scotland.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46So let's see how this week pans out day by day.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49For Monday, there is a break

0:00:49 > 0:00:52from the incessant rain some of us have had over the weekend.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54There are showers, though, still towards the north-west of the UK.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Hail and thunder possible with these.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Cold enough to be wintery on the tops of the hills at this stage,

0:00:59 > 0:01:03and even stronger winds for a time in northern Scotland producing

0:01:03 > 0:01:08here gusts above 70mph, so there could be some further disruption.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11And more rain to come from a quick-moving weather system towards

0:01:11 > 0:01:14southern parts of the UK Monday night and into Tuesday morning.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Tuesday still very windy across northern Scotland for a time.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Then this low pressure comes in later on Tuesday,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22an it's this that promises more rain for areas

0:01:22 > 0:01:23that don't need it -

0:01:23 > 0:01:26northern England, North Wales, Northern Ireland too.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30Northern extent still uncertain. Scotland stays in fairly chilly air.

0:01:30 > 0:01:31Still mild to the south.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Strengthening winds, though,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35on the southern flank of this area of low pressure.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38That means the risk of disruptive gales to parts of South Wales

0:01:38 > 0:01:41and southern England, in particular.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44So that's something to watch. That's system pulls away on Tuesday night.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47There is a very brief ridge of high pressure coming in.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49So the winds easing going into Wednesday morning,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51especially across northern parts.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Allowing a cold start with a touch of frost.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Bit of a lull, then, first thing Wednesday,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57but then that next area of low pressure coming in.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00That's bringing rain to parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02again with strengthening winds.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Still southern parts of the UK in the unusually mild air with

0:02:06 > 0:02:08temperatures into the mid teens.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11That system then drives rain south-eastwards late

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Wednesday into Thursday morning.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Some heavy bursts, further heavy, squally showers

0:02:16 > 0:02:19following on behind to western parts, in particular, on Thursday.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Maybe merging to give some longer spells of rain in Scotland.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Those winds are strong, near gale,

0:02:24 > 0:02:28if not gale towards western coasts on Thursday.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32Then we begin the gradual transition to colder air right across the UK.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34You can see the isobars lining up to the north.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37That colder air pushing south Thursday into Friday.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39But, as yet, there is some uncertainty about the timing,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42and that comes from this weather front close to southern England

0:02:42 > 0:02:45that could keep some of us still in the mild air on Friday

0:02:45 > 0:02:48and still with some outbreaks of rain.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51But if you're not in the cold air by the end of Friday, you will be going

0:02:51 > 0:02:55into next weekend and that is going to bring those wintery showers,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57those snow showers,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00to ever lower levels across the northern half of Britain, but not

0:03:00 > 0:03:03necessarily just across the northern half of Britain next weekend.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Again, something we need to be keeping a close eye on.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10So, next weekend - cold. Colder still when you factor in the wind.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14So wind chill will be an issue, and again, we have that risk of snow.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16Nothing unusual for the time of year,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18just very unusual compared to what we've had.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21It looks as if going into the following week,

0:03:21 > 0:03:26temperatures come up a little bit, so this may be a short, sharp shock.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30But a reminder that we are getting ever closer to winter. Bye for now.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35In this job, we must always be prepared to take risks.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Strike! Strike!

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Support your fellow officers.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Wait till someone's vulnerable, then knock 'em down.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Good advice, Dad.

0:03:46 > 0:03:47All the pressures of the force.
