0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello there. The 1st of December is, of course,

0:00:05 > 0:00:07the first day of meteorological winter

0:00:07 > 0:00:11and, for some of us, we saw some appropriately wintry weather.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12This was the view in the Highlands.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14Thanks to our weather-watcher for sending that in.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17Yes, we saw some snow in some parts of Scotland

0:00:17 > 0:00:19but the snow turned back to rain

0:00:19 > 0:00:20during the day as milder air

0:00:20 > 0:00:23filtered its way north behind this weather front.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25In fact, for the south, with a little bit of sunshine,

0:00:25 > 0:00:27we saw temperatures as high as 15 degrees.

0:00:27 > 0:00:28Very, very mild for the time of year.

0:00:28 > 0:00:29A mild night to follow

0:00:29 > 0:00:31but some wind and rain gets into Scotland

0:00:31 > 0:00:33and Northern Ireland overnight,

0:00:33 > 0:00:34that will drift its way southwards.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37It'll get a bit stuck across Wales and northern England

0:00:37 > 0:00:38through the day but it does leave behind

0:00:38 > 0:00:40a pretty reasonable day across most of Scotland.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Bar the odd shower in the far north,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44most places enjoying some decent spells of sunshine.

0:00:44 > 0:00:467 or 8 degrees and not particularly windy,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48it looks like a good winter's afternoon,

0:00:48 > 0:00:50as it will be across most of Northern Ireland.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Very different though for northern England.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53Lots of cloud and outbreaks of rain,

0:00:53 > 0:00:54mainly in the north-west.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Across Wales, it will be quite cloudy,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58quite wet, some of the rain quite heavy

0:00:58 > 0:00:59and we're going to have to watch

0:00:59 > 0:01:01the rainfall totals here in particular

0:01:01 > 0:01:03because they will be totting up in the next few days.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05It's slightly drier in the Midlands, if rather cloudy,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08and similar conditions across East Anglia, the south-east

0:01:08 > 0:01:09and most of those southern counties,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11very mild again, 12 or 13 degrees.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13Through the evening, that band of rain

0:01:13 > 0:01:14doesn't really move too far too quickly.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17It's still there across Wales, parts of northern England.

0:01:17 > 0:01:18It's mild south of that,

0:01:18 > 0:01:2011, 12 degrees but quite cold further north,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22a touch of frost in parts of Scotland,

0:01:22 > 0:01:23maybe into Northern Ireland as well.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Now, let's look at the big picture for Thursday

0:01:25 > 0:01:27because that weather front

0:01:27 > 0:01:28is still there or thereabouts,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30draped across that central swathe of the UK,

0:01:30 > 0:01:32not really moving too far too quickly

0:01:32 > 0:01:34so it will be another wet day,

0:01:34 > 0:01:35particularly across Wales.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37And some of that rain just creeping away

0:01:37 > 0:01:39from northern England down into the Midlands

0:01:39 > 0:01:42but south of that, again, it stays essentially dry,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44cloudy, breezy and mild once again.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Temperatures here will be around about

0:01:46 > 0:01:4712 or 13 degrees once again.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49To the north of that, we are firmly

0:01:49 > 0:01:51in single figures, 4 or 5 degrees there

0:01:51 > 0:01:53for Glasgow, Belfast and Aberdeen.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Meanwhile, Thursday night into Friday,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57that weather front finally gets a move-on,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59pushes its way towards the near continent.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01It should leave behind a reasonable day

0:02:01 > 0:02:02for many parts of the UK.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Once we get rid of that rain from the south-east,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06there should be some sunshine following along

0:02:06 > 0:02:07behind but maybe not for all.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Quite cloudy through the afternoon,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11I expect, across the far south-east.

0:02:11 > 0:02:12More wind and rain showing its hand

0:02:12 > 0:02:14later in the day across the far north and west.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16And this weather front's got a lot of isobars

0:02:16 > 0:02:19on either side of it so it will be a windy start

0:02:19 > 0:02:21to the weekend and quite a wet one too.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22The rain and the stronger winds

0:02:22 > 0:02:24moving their way southwards and eastwards

0:02:24 > 0:02:26all the while with something a bit drier

0:02:26 > 0:02:28and brighter following on behind

0:02:28 > 0:02:30but the next batch of rain already pushing into Scotland.

0:02:30 > 0:02:31Some of that may turn

0:02:31 > 0:02:33to a little bit of snow over higher ground.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34Second part of the weekend,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36yet another area of low pressure heads our way.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Lots of isobars again so it's going

0:02:38 > 0:02:40to be quite windy for the second part of the weekend

0:02:40 > 0:02:42as well and quite wet as well.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44And again, some of that rain turns to snow

0:02:44 > 0:02:46over the higher ground of Scotland.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47But in the south, out of the rain,

0:02:47 > 0:02:50it's relatively mild once again, 13 or 14 degrees.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53And it's all being driven by a very strong jet stream

0:02:53 > 0:02:56which will still be with us into the early part of next week,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59a series of low pressure systems running along that.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02At its core, the strength of winds probably 170mph or maybe more,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05that should just ease off a little bit Tuesday-Wednesday which

0:03:05 > 0:03:07will allow the jet stream to meander which allows high pressure to

0:03:07 > 0:03:10build in from the south and that should settle things down

0:03:10 > 0:03:13at least temporarily but it really doesn't last very long at all.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16By Thursday or so, we're pretty much back to square one with

0:03:16 > 0:03:20a powerful jet bringing further spells of wind and rain.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22So the outlook, generally speaking, pretty unsettled.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26It'll be windy or very windy with some rain at times

0:03:26 > 0:03:29but as that temporary ridge of high pressure builds in,

0:03:29 > 0:03:30we might just see a touch of frost.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Christmas Day may be the highlight of the holidays...

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Oh, yes. ..but all that pressure in the kitchen...
