0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello. If you watched Jay on Tuesday,

0:00:05 > 0:00:10he talked about 1st December as the start of the meteorological winter.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12So, what has autumn been like?

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Pretty average, really, temperature-wise and rainfall-wise.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18September was particularly cold,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20one of the coldest for about 20 years,

0:00:20 > 0:00:22and the sunshine wasn't exceptional,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25but that was borne out by a pretty mild November,

0:00:25 > 0:00:29so temperatures were average. It was very wet in November,

0:00:29 > 0:00:33but it's been the dullest November on record,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36so how nice it was on Wednesday

0:00:36 > 0:00:39to see some weather watchers' pictures with blue skies.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Not for all, but a lot in the South

0:00:41 > 0:00:44enjoyed some sunshine,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46but that weather front is taking centre stage

0:00:46 > 0:00:48for the next 24 to 36 hours.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50It'll meander across the country,

0:00:50 > 0:00:52throwing in pulses of rain,

0:00:52 > 0:00:55rain that we don't need, on saturated ground.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57It's also the dividing line

0:00:57 > 0:01:00between this mild air and cold, wintery weather to the North,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02which we witnessed earlier in the week.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04A cold start in the North,

0:01:04 > 0:01:08fog as well, but this rain pushes Northwards.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12Winds strengthen, gales or severe gale force winds.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16We could see brightness in Southern and Eastern areas,

0:01:16 > 0:01:17and towards the North,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20but the windows smaller than on Wednesday.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Perhaps some snow for the Southern Uplands

0:01:22 > 0:01:24and the North Pennines.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26That takes away the wind and rain for a time,

0:01:26 > 0:01:29so it looks like a quiet end to the week,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31but by the end of play on Friday,

0:01:31 > 0:01:35more wind and rain arrives in the North and West.

0:01:35 > 0:01:36Friday is a mild day

0:01:36 > 0:01:38so we expect the continuation of

0:01:38 > 0:01:40the snow thaw across Scotland,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43and with flood warnings out already, that is a concern.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46Look at this - the tightly packed lines

0:01:46 > 0:01:48denote some VERY windy weather,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Friday night till the end of Saturday,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54with further fronts bringing in more rain.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Let's put detail on the bones for Saturday.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59We may escape the rain till late in the South and East,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02but we won't escape the winds,

0:02:02 > 0:02:03potentially storm force.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06Very mild air, so a lot of wet weather to come

0:02:06 > 0:02:09in areas where we've already seen too much rain.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11We could have another bout of snow

0:02:11 > 0:02:14as the milder air pushes in

0:02:14 > 0:02:16and meanders South.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19As it clears away, it'll take away the strongest winds,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22but it looks like a very windy weekend,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24perhaps the second half of the weekend

0:02:24 > 0:02:26playing out quite fair.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28That front never really goes away from the South,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31and it combines forces with this next one,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33so we've got a double whammy

0:02:33 > 0:02:35with two weather systems across the UK

0:02:35 > 0:02:37and windy weather again.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Not a pleasant start to the week.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42And so it continues. But why?

0:02:42 > 0:02:45We're stuck in a rut, unfortunately.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47We've got a strong jet stream

0:02:47 > 0:02:48across the country,

0:02:48 > 0:02:50a strong westerly jet stream,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53so it's steering our weather systems,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55those low pressures, right across us.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Midweek, there's a hint it weakens,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00which allows high pressure to build,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02more especially in the South.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04It means a quieter spell of weather,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06a day, possibly more, of drying out.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Some respite, if you like.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10But not for long.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11We return to those strong

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Westerly winds later in the week

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and more of those low pressures

0:03:15 > 0:03:17with wet and windy weather.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19So it remains unsettled,

0:03:19 > 0:03:20it won't be raining all the time,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22but there will be spells of

0:03:22 > 0:03:24VERY windy weather

0:03:24 > 0:03:25and the rain onto saturated ground,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27with high river levels,

0:03:27 > 0:03:28doesn't look good.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30As ever, the weather warnings are on the website.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Christmas Day may be the highlight of the holidays...

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Oh, yes. ..but all that pressure in the kitchen...

0:03:36 > 0:03:39Oh, it's wonderful. ..can definitely put a dampener on your celebrations.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41But don't panic... Great coach.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44..I've got all the recipes you'll need, with some fantastic tips

0:03:44 > 0:03:46to make the day go off without a hitch.
