0:00:02 > 0:00:06Storm Desmond, the fourth named storm here in the UK and Ireland,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09unleashed severe weather through the first part of the weekend

0:00:09 > 0:00:12with damaging winds and exceptionally heavy rainfall.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14Sunday was a bit of a quieter day.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17But Storm Desmond left scenes a bit like this one

0:00:17 > 0:00:19taken by one of our weather watchers in Whitesands in Dumfries.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22You can see the extent of the flooding there.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Severe flooding is still a problem

0:00:24 > 0:00:26across many parts of northern England.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Flood warnings also issued across southern Scotland.

0:00:29 > 0:00:330345 988 1188 is the Floodline number

0:00:33 > 0:00:35if you're concerned about your region.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37During the course of Monday, it is a bit of a quieter day.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Some more rain on the cards.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41We've got a warm front bringing some spells of rain

0:00:41 > 0:00:44across some northern areas during the early part of the morning.

0:00:44 > 0:00:45Fairly light and patchy.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Much of the UK having a drier interlude with some sunny spells,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51and still very mild, with temperatures 13 or 14 Celsius,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53even a bit higher than that in one or two spots.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56But during Monday afternoon, we've got more rain to come.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59The severe flooding problems aren't going to abate in a hurry.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03We could well see severe disruption to transport and travel for Monday

0:01:03 > 0:01:06across parts of northern England and southern Scotland.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09And later in the day, our attention turns to the west once again.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11This reasonably active front moving its way west to east,

0:01:11 > 0:01:15delivering 20mm to 40mm of rain across the flood-affected regions.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Not a huge amount, but it's falling on very saturated ground,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21high river levels and very sensitive catchments.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23This rain, during the course of Tuesday,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25will start to ease away towards the east.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Still some fairly tight isobars around,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30so we're left with another blustery sort of day.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Some slightly colder air following on behind that main band of rain.

0:01:33 > 0:01:34Through the day on Tuesday,

0:01:34 > 0:01:37some wet weather clearing away towards the east,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39and then a return to fresher, brighter conditions.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Still some scattered showers, as you can see, blown in from the west.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Some of those showers will be a little bit wintry

0:01:44 > 0:01:46on top of the hills of Scotland.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Still fairly mild in general, 10 to 14 Celsius,

0:01:48 > 0:01:52but there will be a dip in the temperatures later on in the day

0:01:52 > 0:01:53following on from the north-west.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Then as we look towards the middle part of the week,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57high pressure not far away,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59particularly from southern parts of the country.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02But much of the country dominated by tight isobars,

0:02:02 > 0:02:03further areas of low pressure,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06and during Wednesday, we could see some further heavy rainfall

0:02:06 > 0:02:09across parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland

0:02:09 > 0:02:10and the north-west of England.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Further south and east, a much drier story.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16But it's, again, falling on areas that have seen heavy rain

0:02:16 > 0:02:18and the flooding through the course of the weekend.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21As that front makes it way southwards during the course of Thursday,

0:02:21 > 0:02:25we could have seen another 60mm to 80mm of rain

0:02:25 > 0:02:28falling across parts of northern England and southern Scotland.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30This front, as it slips further south,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32will start to fizzle out somewhat

0:02:32 > 0:02:34and it marks the boundary between mild air in the south -

0:02:34 > 0:02:3711 or 12 degrees - with slightly colder and fresher conditions

0:02:37 > 0:02:39piling in from the north-west,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42again, with some wintry showers on the hills of Scotland.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Then as we look towards the end of the week, on into Friday,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46a ridge of higher pressure here for a time.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48So, some slightly quieter weather conditions,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51but low pressure lurking out in the Atlantic once again.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Temperatures by Friday a little bit cooler than they have been,

0:02:54 > 0:02:56really, for much of the week.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Further rain heading into the north-west later on in the day.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Things become a little bit more uncertain

0:03:01 > 0:03:03as we head towards next weekend and beyond.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06But it looks at the moment like we're likely to start off the weekend

0:03:06 > 0:03:08between areas of low pressure.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11So, a fairly quiet start to the weekend, all in all.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14But with low pressure likely to head towards the north-west of the UK,

0:03:14 > 0:03:16we could see a return to something more unsettled.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19So, looking toward the six- to ten-day period,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21there will start to be some drier interludes.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Also, we'll return to near-normal temperatures.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27But we're likely to see further rain arriving by the end of the period.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33After 17 years with the Royal Ballet,

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Carlos Acosta is coming home.
