0:00:03 > 0:00:04Ten days or so until Christmas
0:00:04 > 0:00:06and all sorts can happen between now and then.
0:00:06 > 0:00:08But for those dreaming of a white one, well,
0:00:08 > 0:00:11temperatures are really heading in the wrong direction at the moment.
0:00:11 > 0:00:13We've got a feed of subtropical air
0:00:13 > 0:00:15coming up from the middle of the Atlantic,
0:00:15 > 0:00:18which does mean that it's going to get even milder
0:00:18 > 0:00:20over the next few days, if that is possible.
0:00:20 > 0:00:24Mid teens quite widely up and down the UK this week.
0:00:24 > 0:00:28Compare that with where we should be this time of year -
0:00:28 > 0:00:30a good 5, 6, 7 degrees milder than normal.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Quite remarkable.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34The price we pay is some rain.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36It's been a pretty wet night in some places
0:00:36 > 0:00:38and still some dribs and drabs left behind.
0:00:38 > 0:00:40Though plenty of dry weather too
0:00:40 > 0:00:41and hopefully where you are
0:00:41 > 0:00:43you'll see a glimpse of brightness through the day.
0:00:43 > 0:00:46Temperatures shooting up into the mid teens
0:00:46 > 0:00:48and a lot milder than it has been
0:00:48 > 0:00:50across the Highlands and Grampians,
0:00:50 > 0:00:53where a thaw continues apace.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55Now, we're a little bit concerned as we go into the night
0:00:55 > 0:00:58and Thursday morning at a weather front coming in from the west
0:00:58 > 0:01:01which will bring some fairly persistent rain to Cumbria.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04And of course with the catchments, well, pretty high
0:01:04 > 0:01:07at the moment, that's something we'll be keeping a very close eye on.
0:01:07 > 0:01:09Weather warnings are in force.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11So rain spreading in from the west.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Ahead of that, some warm winds again from the south.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15And in any sunshine, 15, 16...
0:01:15 > 0:01:18maybe 17 degrees in one or two places.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21But that weather front actually is a cold front.
0:01:21 > 0:01:25Don't get too excited, it's not going to introduce particularly chilly air
0:01:25 > 0:01:28but temperatures won't be just as high as we get in towards Friday.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30We've got some westerly winds for a change
0:01:30 > 0:01:33so a little bit less mild, shall we say.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35And actually, plenty of dry weather for a time
0:01:35 > 0:01:38before the next set of weather fronts comes in to the north-west
0:01:38 > 0:01:41with further wet weather for Northern Ireland, western Scotland
0:01:41 > 0:01:43and some north-western parts of England and Wales, too.
0:01:43 > 0:01:47Again, low to mid teens is above par.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Now, this weather system is going to get hooked up
0:01:49 > 0:01:51across the more northern and western parts of the UK
0:01:51 > 0:01:53as we go from Friday into Saturday.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55And again, we'll be keeping a close eye on that
0:01:55 > 0:01:58because we could see some fairly persistent and heavy rain
0:01:58 > 0:02:00across the high ground of north-west Britain,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03whereas further south and east again, in the sunshine,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05with those southerly winds once more,
0:02:05 > 0:02:06temperatures will be shooting up -
0:02:06 > 0:02:0815, 16, 17 degrees.
0:02:08 > 0:02:09Once again, it's possible.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12We could see some records broken over the next few days.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14That's how mild it's going to be.
0:02:14 > 0:02:15Later on in the weekend,
0:02:15 > 0:02:18again, we see the southerly winds replaced by westerlies,
0:02:18 > 0:02:20so not just as mild.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23More low pressure systems are getting lined up out in the Atlantic,
0:02:23 > 0:02:26getting fed by a strong jet stream.
0:02:26 > 0:02:27And in the dip of that jet,
0:02:27 > 0:02:29we get low pressure systems forming
0:02:29 > 0:02:32and whistling up towards the UK.
0:02:32 > 0:02:33Fairly intense features
0:02:33 > 0:02:36so potentially some further wet and windy weather
0:02:36 > 0:02:39as we go into the start of next week.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41In fact, the jet stream really is wrapped
0:02:41 > 0:02:43all the way around the northern hemisphere
0:02:43 > 0:02:48and it's kind of stuck in this sort of pattern at the moment.
0:02:48 > 0:02:49It has been for so long.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52And the jet stream is the dividing line, of course,
0:02:52 > 0:02:55between cold air in polar regions
0:02:55 > 0:02:57and milder air to the south.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00And with that jet stream kind of stuck at the moment,
0:03:00 > 0:03:03we're most definitely on the mild side of things.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06We'll have brief incursions of chillier air through next week
0:03:06 > 0:03:07but only brief,
0:03:07 > 0:03:10and only really affecting the more northern parts of the UK.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12Further south, well and truly mild.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15So as we approach Christmas Day, generally mild.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18Briefly chilly at times, especially in the north.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21Plenty of rain and wind, not much in the way of snow.
0:03:21 > 0:03:22And we're going to have to watch out
0:03:22 > 0:03:25for potentially stormy conditions at times
0:03:25 > 0:03:27in the run-up to Christmas.
0:03:27 > 0:03:28So a lot going on
0:03:28 > 0:03:29and I'll update you again tomorrow.
