0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello there. We'll sneak a peek at the weather patterns

0:00:05 > 0:00:07for Christmas time in just a moment.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10Right now, though, we've got some extremely mild air across the UK.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Night-time temperatures

0:00:12 > 0:00:1310 degrees above normal

0:00:13 > 0:00:15means it's a very mild-looking picture

0:00:15 > 0:00:18for Saturday, but there's some rain around

0:00:18 > 0:00:20and this rain is quite slow moving.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22It's stuck in the same sort of area all day.

0:00:22 > 0:00:23So rain keeps going

0:00:23 > 0:00:25across south-west England

0:00:25 > 0:00:26and particularly Wales.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Heavy rain all mounting up there

0:00:28 > 0:00:30over the hills of South Wales.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32Much of the Midlands towards the south-east

0:00:32 > 0:00:34will be dry, brightening up, a little sunshine.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37Temperatures could hit 16 degrees,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39extremely mild to the east of the Pennines.

0:00:39 > 0:00:40Not much rain here, a bit wetter

0:00:40 > 0:00:42over into the west of the Pennines

0:00:42 > 0:00:44and across Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46a little sunshine at times

0:00:46 > 0:00:47and a scattering of showers too.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49This rain band, though,

0:00:49 > 0:00:50still producing some rain

0:00:50 > 0:00:51into the night-time,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53and pushing back northwards again.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54The rain turning heavier too.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56It may edge its way into Northern Ireland

0:00:56 > 0:00:58and Scotland for a while,

0:00:58 > 0:00:59but tending to clear away

0:00:59 > 0:01:00out into the North Sea

0:01:00 > 0:01:02right at the end of the night.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04Another very mild night because of the cloud,

0:01:04 > 0:01:05because of the wind

0:01:05 > 0:01:07and also because of the rain.

0:01:07 > 0:01:08That weather front, though,

0:01:08 > 0:01:09clearing away on Sunday.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11We're left with an area of low pressure

0:01:11 > 0:01:12to the north of the UK

0:01:12 > 0:01:15and its feeding around a showery airflow.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17There'll be some sunshine around as well,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19particularly across England and Wales,

0:01:19 > 0:01:20a scattering of showers.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21The showers much more frequent

0:01:21 > 0:01:23for Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:01:23 > 0:01:24could be quite heavy as well.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26There'll be a strong and blustery wind.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28It'll be a bit cooler, I think,

0:01:28 > 0:01:29for Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32still some higher temperatures further south,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34but all those numbers are above average

0:01:34 > 0:01:36for the time of year.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Still very changeable weather, though,

0:01:38 > 0:01:40as we head to the run-up to Christmas.

0:01:40 > 0:01:41Zooming in from the Atlantic,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44this next weather front will be packing

0:01:44 > 0:01:46some strong to gale-force winds,

0:01:46 > 0:01:47maybe even some severe gales

0:01:47 > 0:01:49as well around coasts

0:01:49 > 0:01:50and hills in the west.

0:01:50 > 0:01:51Now, this rain could be heavy

0:01:51 > 0:01:53especially over western hills

0:01:53 > 0:01:54and there may well be

0:01:54 > 0:01:56increasing river levels, I think,

0:01:56 > 0:01:57by the end of the day.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59The rain moves through fairly quickly

0:01:59 > 0:02:00for most of us, except in the south

0:02:00 > 0:02:02where it never really clears away.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03Then it starts to push back

0:02:03 > 0:02:05northwards again overnight

0:02:05 > 0:02:06and into Tuesday.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Again, lots of isobars on the chart,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10again, it's going to be very windy,

0:02:10 > 0:02:11but for the most part,

0:02:11 > 0:02:12it's a very mild wind.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14The rain from overnight

0:02:14 > 0:02:15does tend to clear away,

0:02:15 > 0:02:16last of all from the south-east

0:02:16 > 0:02:17of England in the afternoon

0:02:17 > 0:02:20and then showers follow on behind.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Those temperatures, nine in the north

0:02:22 > 0:02:24to 14 in the south.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26And then Tuesday into Wednesday,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28we've still got low pressure

0:02:28 > 0:02:29sitting to the north of the UK,

0:02:29 > 0:02:30but we're back into

0:02:30 > 0:02:32this showery airstream as well.

0:02:32 > 0:02:33The weather fronts focusing

0:02:33 > 0:02:35some bands of showers,

0:02:35 > 0:02:36could be quite heavy as well,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38little sunshine at times,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40maybe a touch of wintriness over the hills

0:02:40 > 0:02:41and mountains of Scotland

0:02:41 > 0:02:43as temperatures here a little bit lower,

0:02:43 > 0:02:44about seven degrees or so, which is

0:02:44 > 0:02:48about normal for this time of year, but what we're seeing as we head

0:02:48 > 0:02:53into next week is this milder air sitting across the bulk of the UK.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57There are signs of some colder air coming in from the other side

0:02:57 > 0:03:00of the Atlantic, approaching northern parts of the UK

0:03:00 > 0:03:04just in time for Christmas, all because the jet stream is buckling.

0:03:04 > 0:03:05It's buckling a little bit further south,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07so it's going to allow the colder air

0:03:07 > 0:03:09to push into more northern parts of the UK

0:03:09 > 0:03:12over the time that we looking at the Christmas festivities.

0:03:12 > 0:03:13If there's a white Christmas,

0:03:13 > 0:03:14it'll be over the hills

0:03:14 > 0:03:15across Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17northern England.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18For much of England and Wales,

0:03:18 > 0:03:19it's going to stay in the mild air.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22South of the jet stream, then there could be some heavy rain.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Jet stream after Christmas moves northwards bringing the milder air

0:03:25 > 0:03:27northwards across the country,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29maybe a little bit drier in the south-east.
