0:00:03 > 0:00:06With recent temperatures more typical of mid-May than mid-December,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09we're going to have to go some if it's a white Christmas you're after.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11We are going to see changes through this week.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12We start off on a pretty mild note.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Then we're going to see a lot of rain and wind, which could

0:00:15 > 0:00:19have its impact and then turning a bit chillier towards Christmas.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Will it be cold enough for snow?

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Well, not much snow on the charts for Sunday.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25These are rain showers rattling across the country.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28They'll tend to clear away for the more Southern and Eastern areas,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30so plenty of sunshine developing here.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32A lot more showers to come, further North and West,

0:00:32 > 0:00:33particularly for Western Scotland.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Some fairly prolonged wet weather here.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39Not AS mild as it has been, but still not remotely cold,

0:00:39 > 0:00:43somewhere between 9 and 14 degrees, North-West to South-East.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Now, showers will keep going, across the West of Scotland

0:00:46 > 0:00:48in particular overnight. Elsewhere, they'll tend to fade away.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51It could be quite chilly as we head towards dawn. Some early brightness.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54That won't last. The next set of fronts whistles in from the West.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58A period of wet and windy weather but, in turn, that won't last either.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01It will brighten up again behind those fronts from the North West.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05Similar temperatures, though. 9 to 13 degrees North to South.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Now, that front is just one of many which'll be crossing

0:01:07 > 0:01:09the country over the next few days

0:01:09 > 0:01:11so brace yourself for further spells of wet and windy weather.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13Tuesday looks particularly wet,

0:01:13 > 0:01:16especially across the high ground of North-West Britain, so South-West

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Scotland, the Cumbrian Fells, Snowdonia, could see a lot of rain.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Warnings are in force.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Quite mild air, just for a time, across the South-East,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27so temperatures could jump up towards the mid-teens.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29That'll be tempered by the strength of the wind.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32It'll brighten up behind those fronts, further North and West.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Those brighter skies will spread across the whole of the country

0:01:34 > 0:01:36come the middle of the week. Some sunshine.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38The wind is not just so strong.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40There will be some blustery showers for the North-West,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42those temperatures just easing down a degree or so.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Now, as we head towards Christmas Eve,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48we're quite concerned about developments of this feature here.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52It could be more intense than this indicates, which could give the risk

0:01:52 > 0:01:55of some very strong winds for the far North of Scotland in particular.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57We'll keep an eye on that, but certainly some very wet weather

0:01:57 > 0:02:00sweeping its way across the country on Christmas Eve,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03so if you're travelling to friends and relatives, watch out for that.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06You'll notice, though, that the low pressure systems

0:02:06 > 0:02:09are taking rather more of a Southerly trajectory

0:02:09 > 0:02:11than we've seen in recent weeks

0:02:11 > 0:02:13and they're following the track of the jet stream, in actual fact.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16The jet stream which for so long has been to the North of us

0:02:16 > 0:02:20is now showing signs of taking a more Southerly path and, of course,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23the jet stream's dividing line between warm air to the South

0:02:23 > 0:02:27and colder air to the North so, for a change, later on this week

0:02:27 > 0:02:31as we approach Christmas, we are going to be in the chillier air.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32Not desperately cold,

0:02:32 > 0:02:36but certainly a contrast compared with what we've had for recent weeks.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39It will feel quite cold and the showers across Northern Britain

0:02:39 > 0:02:42could well be wintry in flavour up over the hills.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45So, what about a white Christmas? What constitutes a white Christmas?

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Just one flake of snow. That's all you need

0:02:47 > 0:02:51and that's happened 38 times over the past 55 years.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55The deepest snow, the most widespread snow recently, 2010.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59For the big day, then, it looks as if it will be a cold start

0:02:59 > 0:03:02and Northern areas will probably stay in that chilly air.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Fronts will try to push in from the South, bringing rain,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07and eventually they'll try to bring in milder air as well.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10There's a lot of uncertainty about the progress of these fronts

0:03:10 > 0:03:12as they push into that colder air.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15And then, next weekend, it looks as if that rain will clear, but before

0:03:15 > 0:03:19that happens, there is the risk of some snow across Northern areas.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Of course, mostly up over the high ground. That'll clear through.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25It turns drier, we think, for a time, at long last,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and probably a touch chillier, but for how long?

0:03:28 > 0:03:29I'll update you again tomorrow.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34# Out there in the dark

0:03:34 > 0:03:36# Out there in the dark

0:03:36 > 0:03:40# There's a beckoning candle, yeah
