0:00:02 > 0:00:06Hello. Thanks for tuning in to our outlook for the next ten days.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08We know now that Christmas is going to be very mild,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10particularly across the south of the country,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14but in the short term we're also keeping an eye on this massive

0:00:14 > 0:00:18cloud here coming out of Eastern Canada, out of Newfoundland.

0:00:18 > 0:00:19This is going to be Storm Eva

0:00:19 > 0:00:23and it's going to sweep to the north-west of the United Kingdom and

0:00:23 > 0:00:26it's going to bring a spell of severe gales to north-western Scotland.

0:00:26 > 0:00:27So here it is.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30First thing on Wednesday morning it's still more

0:00:30 > 0:00:33than 1,000 miles to the south-west of us and actually, Wednesday,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36ahead of this storm, it's going to be a pretty good day for most of us.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38There will be some sunshine around.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41We've got showers and more of a breeze across the northern

0:00:41 > 0:00:45half of Scotland, but the bulk of the UK should enjoy a fine day.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Let's see what the middle of the afternoon is going to be like, then.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50And starting in Scotland and Northern Ireland, you can

0:00:50 > 0:00:52see the rain's just about approaching Northern Ireland here.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55A few showers in the Northern Isles.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57A fairly coolish sort of day, around five, six degrees.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Remember, the winds are strengthening so it will feel a little bit

0:01:00 > 0:01:02colder than perhaps the temperature suggests.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05And across the south of the country those highs aren't

0:01:05 > 0:01:08quite as high as what we've been used to in the last few days.

0:01:08 > 0:01:13This is still very, very mild for the time of year, around 12 degrees,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15but we've been used to around 15 or 16.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18So, here's Wednesday afternoon and evening.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20We're starting to approach Christmas Eve

0:01:20 > 0:01:23and Storm Eva moves to the north-west of us.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26We're not anticipating it to be the most ferocious of storms,

0:01:26 > 0:01:28but it's still going to bring a spell of rough weather.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31The worst of it once again I'd like to emphasise will be

0:01:31 > 0:01:33to the north-west of the country,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36but wherever you are in the UK on Christmas Eve, if you're travelling,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39there will be some very gusty conditions about

0:01:39 > 0:01:41and the odd downpour too.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44So, Christmas Eve, first thing in the morning, early hours,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48gusts of 50mph across mainland Scotland, 70-80 for Stornoway there,

0:01:48 > 0:01:52then that storm's going to sweep past Orkney and Shetland.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55So rough weather for us across this part of the country.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Here's the band of rain that will be crossing the UK at the sting,

0:01:58 > 0:01:59the tail of Storm Eva.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02That is going to bring some temporarily gale-force winds

0:02:02 > 0:02:03to some other parts of the UK.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07But later on in the day on Christmas Eve we are actually going to

0:02:07 > 0:02:09get some clearer skies, or dare I say it, even some sunshine.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Mild one - 13 degrees in London but colder there, of course,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15in windswept Scotland - around six or seven degrees Celsius.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19The weather isn't going to change much through Christmas Eve evening -

0:02:19 > 0:02:20it's still going to be blustery

0:02:20 > 0:02:23and we will see some heavy showers about as well.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Now, onto Christmas Day.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27I already spilt the beans at the beginning of the broadcast -

0:02:27 > 0:02:28it's going to be a mild one -

0:02:28 > 0:02:31but that's what we've been forecasting for quite some time now.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34South-westerly winds, temperatures of around 13 degrees

0:02:34 > 0:02:36and outbreaks of rain. Colder weather in Scotland -

0:02:36 > 0:02:39could even be a touch of frost first thing in the morning.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43And this pattern, with low pressure close by and mild south-westerlies

0:02:43 > 0:02:49continues right into Boxing Day, so rain around with mild weather.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Now, beyond that, into early next week,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54look how far north this mild air has reached.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58In fact almost into the Arctic Circle there.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Southern parts of Scandinavia also getting the mild conditions,

0:03:01 > 0:03:05so really the emphasis for early next week is that it is going to

0:03:05 > 0:03:08stay mild and this pattern, the jet stream giving us

0:03:08 > 0:03:12a fetch of mild air from the south-west is not going to budge.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15This jet stream would have to be further southwards

0:03:15 > 0:03:16to get colder weather.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Yesterday we talked a little bit about New Year's Eve.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Still too early to say exactly what weather we're going to get but it

0:03:22 > 0:03:28still does look like it is going to be a relatively mild New Year's Eve.

0:03:28 > 0:03:29Thanks for watching.

0:03:33 > 0:03:38I'm here surrounded by one of nature's greatest wonders,
