0:00:03 > 0:00:07There could be a slightly different look to the weather for the new year.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10We close this year out, though, with yet another storm.

0:00:10 > 0:00:15This area of cloud underwent rapid cyclogenesis, a weather bomb,

0:00:15 > 0:00:20the pressure falling 24 millibars or more in just 24 hours, Storm Frank.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23Because it's a deep area of low pressure, it's being steered

0:00:23 > 0:00:26up towards Iceland, getting the full force of that storm.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30But we've seen the winds picking up and some heavy rain moving in,

0:00:30 > 0:00:32and it's the rain that continues to be the main concern,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35especially for those flood-hit areas already,

0:00:35 > 0:00:38so we have this amber rain warning from the Met Office.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41The warning should expire by the morning across Northern Ireland

0:00:41 > 0:00:43as the rain clears,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45but we'll see those warnings continuing across south-west

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Scotland, north-west England throughout

0:00:48 > 0:00:50the morning as the rain continues.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53The winds will gradually ease as the rain clears slowly towards the east,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56allowing drier weather in the afternoon

0:00:56 > 0:00:59and some showers for Scotland. It'll be drier for Northern Ireland.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01It should eventually turn drier in Wales

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and western parts of England, too.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06That weather front will clear away overnight,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08taking the rain away eventually,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11and then for New Year's Eve we're into something a little different.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13We'll find bands of showers particularly focused on that

0:01:13 > 0:01:15weather front there.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17We start the day generally dry and sunny,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19and eastern areas should have a decent morning.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22We'll see these bands of showers, though, coming into the west,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25sliding across all areas later on in the day.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28The showers are going to be heavy, there'll be some hail and thunder,

0:01:28 > 0:01:29some snow over the hills

0:01:29 > 0:01:33in the north, and here it'll start to feel a little bit colder.

0:01:33 > 0:01:34We've got colder air beginning to

0:01:34 > 0:01:37push in just in time for the clock to strike

0:01:37 > 0:01:39midnight for the start of the new year,

0:01:39 > 0:01:43milder air just getting pushed aside just for a little while.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46But we have another area of low pressure coming our way,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49this one not having the same impact as Storm Frank.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Indeed, it'll probably stay out to the south-west for a while.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55A brief ridge of high pressure means a lot of dry weather

0:01:55 > 0:01:58and some sunshine for New Year's Day,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01the winds picking up out towards the west and the cloud thickening,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04a little rain not far away for Northern Ireland,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07south-west England by the end of the day.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10So, we've got higher pressure towards the east, low pressure in the west.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13This low pressure is going to become quite slow-moving. Around it,

0:02:13 > 0:02:17there'll be some stronger winds and maybe a south-easterly wind

0:02:17 > 0:02:20picking up across many parts of the UK

0:02:20 > 0:02:22and bands of rain pushing up from the south-west.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26But there's not as much warm air in this, so there won't be as much rain.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30The rain won't be quite as heavy, and it's going to be mainly

0:02:30 > 0:02:34focused on that area of low pressure as it runs northwards across the UK.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Behind that, another one comes in.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Notice everything is just a little bit further south.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43The winds are still strong on Sunday, we'll still see some more rain,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46particularly across the south-west of England and South Wales,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48not quite so wet further north.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52So, that's Sunday. Temperatures seven to eleven degrees.

0:02:52 > 0:02:53Throughout most of the week,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55we've had the jet stream in this sort of orientation,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58drawing up some very warm but very wet air on its forward flank,

0:02:58 > 0:03:01which is why we've had so much flooding.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05As we move into the first week of January,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07the jet stream is in a slightly different position.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11It's more zonal, west-east, it's a little bit further south, and

0:03:11 > 0:03:15the jet stream will steer areas of low pressure further south, as well.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Now, we'll get an undercut of colder air.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20It'll feel a bit colder, as it should do at this time of the year.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Pressure's a bit higher in the north, it should be a bit drier.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Most of the rain is nearer the areas of low pressure,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28nearer the southern half of the UK,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31so we're a little different to what we're seeing right now.

0:03:33 > 0:03:34I want futurism,

0:03:34 > 0:03:36but not yesterday's futurism.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38I want today's futurism for tomorrow.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41I want Hollywood glamour and feathers and sequins

0:03:41 > 0:03:42and glitter unicorns!
