0:00:03 > 0:00:06With flooding again ongoing as I speak, I know many of you watching

0:00:06 > 0:00:09will just be hoping that we at the Weather Centre can magically

0:00:09 > 0:00:12turn the taps off and bring some more prolonged dry weather at long last.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16Stay tuned, there may be hope on the horizon, but for the time being,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19it's the familiar story. Low pressure plonked slap bang

0:00:19 > 0:00:21on top of us and along this frontal zone just to the north,

0:00:21 > 0:00:24that is where the most persistent rain has been

0:00:24 > 0:00:27for the last two days across eastern Scotland, and will continue

0:00:27 > 0:00:29to be so for the next 24 hours or so.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Quite a lot of snow up over the high ground,

0:00:31 > 0:00:33but of course the rain is the main concern.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Warnings will continue to be updated hour by hour,

0:00:36 > 0:00:38and the risk of persistent rain extends

0:00:38 > 0:00:40into north-east England as well.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44The feel of the day not helped by that strong easterly wind,

0:00:44 > 0:00:47very rough seas indeed. Cold, bleak, wet and windy here.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Elsewhere, there will be some sharp showers too

0:00:49 > 0:00:52particularly out west with some slow-moving downpours

0:00:52 > 0:00:55across parts of Wales, south-west England as well.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Somebody somewhere will avoid these and have a dry day.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Most likely across south-eastern parts of England and Wales,

0:01:00 > 0:01:02and with light winds it shouldn't feel too bad,

0:01:02 > 0:01:06but colder further north, and particularly raw where it

0:01:06 > 0:01:09stays wet across eastern Scotland and north-east England.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12By Wednesday morning, we've got another concern and that's fog.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15We could see some persistent fog across parts of south-east

0:01:15 > 0:01:18England into Wednesday morning and some of the major airports

0:01:18 > 0:01:22could be affected so watch out for disruption and warnings.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24It could be a murky start across this part of the world

0:01:24 > 0:01:27but by and large actually, Wednesday a better day.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29We'll have lost much of the persistent rain,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32still some wintry showers across the east of Scotland

0:01:32 > 0:01:35where it will feel chilly. The winds won't be as strong though

0:01:35 > 0:01:38and further south light winds and plenty of dry weather.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39It doesn't last though.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42The next frontal system comes charging in off the Atlantic,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45another batch of wet weather just as we don't need it

0:01:45 > 0:01:48and that front then gets hooked up across the north-east

0:01:48 > 0:01:52of Scotland. Again we could see some more prolonged wet weather

0:01:52 > 0:01:54and quite a lot of snow up over the high ground.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57We'll keep an eye on that. For the rest of us,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59it should brighten up once the fronts move through,

0:01:59 > 0:02:03there will be some sunshine but the brisk wind will carry some showers

0:02:03 > 0:02:05and it will feel quite chilly, 4-5 degrees in the north,

0:02:05 > 0:02:08but milder in the south. As we end the week,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11that front still not really clear of the far north-east

0:02:11 > 0:02:13so we will have to keep a very close eye on that,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15and that cold air is still there, but further south,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17some sunshine, some showers,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20and it won't be as cold further south,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23and then as we end the week, low pressure still in control,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26and we're going to have to monitor this set of fronts

0:02:26 > 0:02:29snaking up from the south-west, which gives the potential

0:02:29 > 0:02:31for another batch of wet and windy weather,

0:02:31 > 0:02:35initially across the south-west, moving its way north-eastwards

0:02:35 > 0:02:38and then as that encounters the cold air, we could see some

0:02:38 > 0:02:41snow up over the high ground of northern Britain,

0:02:41 > 0:02:43but let's take a step back and give you the reason

0:02:43 > 0:02:44for my tentative optimism.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47We've got some unusually high pressure

0:02:47 > 0:02:51building across the North Pole, and what that serves to do is

0:02:51 > 0:02:55to push out cold air, a bit like dense treacle.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58It gets squeezed out by the high in various directions.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01We've had a cold plunge across Europe in recent days

0:03:01 > 0:03:04and as we head into next week, we could well see

0:03:04 > 0:03:07a cold plunge further west coming down across the Atlantic

0:03:07 > 0:03:09in our direction.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12It is a long way off but the computer models are beginning to agree

0:03:12 > 0:03:15that we are going to see something of a significant change,

0:03:15 > 0:03:19turning notably colder with widespread frost,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22some wintry showers, but the most important thing perhaps

0:03:22 > 0:03:26is it looks like turning significantly drier

0:03:26 > 0:03:28than for some considerable time.

0:03:28 > 0:03:29I'll update you again tomorrow.
