0:00:03 > 0:00:05The coldest weather of the winter so far is on its way.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07Exactly when it arrives is still open to a bit of doubt,

0:00:07 > 0:00:10but it will arrive come next week. Quite a shock to the system!

0:00:10 > 0:00:13Before that, there's a risk I'll sound like a broken record, with yet

0:00:13 > 0:00:16more wet weather sweeping across the country from an active frontal

0:00:16 > 0:00:18system charging in off the Atlantic,

0:00:18 > 0:00:21as we've seen for week after week after week.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23So, that wet weather pushing its way north-eastwards

0:00:23 > 0:00:26in the direction of Scotland, exactly where we don't want it.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28For the rest of the UK, things will brighten up,

0:00:28 > 0:00:31with plenty of sunshine through the afternoon and just a few showers.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34But let's concentrate on that rain across Scotland.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37Not just rain, of course, a lot of snow up over the high ground,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39but it's the rain of most concern.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42I'm afraid we could well be seeing scenes like these again,

0:00:42 > 0:00:45sent in from Weather Watchers over the last couple of days.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47A very real probability of further flooding, an amber

0:00:47 > 0:00:51warning in force from the Met Office for parts of eastern Scotland.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Be prepared for further disruption. Cold and bleak.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Further south, yes, some sunshine,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Northern Ireland, England and Wales having a bright afternoon.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02It'll be chilly in that wind, a few showers scudding across,

0:01:02 > 0:01:03but a bit of sunshine

0:01:03 > 0:01:06makes all the difference, doesn't it? We haven't seen much recently.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Temperatures at sixes and sevens,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11so definitely a bit of an edge to that wind.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14As we go into the evening and night, as temperatures fall away, I think

0:01:14 > 0:01:17ice could be an issue, particularly across central and northern areas.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Further wet weather across the north-east of Scotland.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23The weather front just stalls there. Further snow up over the high ground.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25We're going to see clusters of showers moving across

0:01:25 > 0:01:27the country during Friday.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Cold enough for snow over high ground

0:01:29 > 0:01:31in northern England and Northern Ireland.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35Most places will see some sunshine away from the far north-east.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Cold in the north, milder in the south.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Now, as we approach the weekend, low pressure remains in control,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44and that means further rain

0:01:44 > 0:01:48and the very real probability of further ongoing flooding issues.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52The detail of the weekend's weather is pretty elusive, I have to say,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55but we will see further rain at times, the risk of more flooding

0:01:55 > 0:01:58and then that change I mentioned,

0:01:58 > 0:02:02because we are going to see cold air surging southwards.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05How quickly it happens is, well, a little bit open to doubt,

0:02:05 > 0:02:09but it will arrive in the end come the early part of next week.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Winter as we used to know it. It is going to be a dramatic change,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15a dramatic change for nature, as well, because of course

0:02:15 > 0:02:18we've seen spring bulbs across the country.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20It's been that warm through December.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24I think some of those bulbs might look a bit miserable come next week,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27with some snowfall in the forecast.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Of course, it's been so wet, we've had all the flooding,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32many fields covered in water.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Well, some of those fields might transform themselves

0:02:35 > 0:02:37into ice rinks come next week,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40because temperatures are going to take something of a nose dive.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Well, colder weather flooding south,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45behind the jet stream, which is also going to head southwards.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47At least with the jet to the south of us,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49the jet carrying the rain-bearing weather fronts,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52it does look like being drier, much drier than it has been recently,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54though there will be some wintry showers.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56But the jet stream is incredibly contorted,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59twists and turns in the jet all the way round the northern hemisphere.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03This sort of blocked pattern means that if you're stuck in a cold

0:03:03 > 0:03:06area, it's likely to stay cold for some considerable time,

0:03:06 > 0:03:10if you're stuck in a warm area, it'll stay warm for some considerable time.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13But it does look as if we're going to be on the cold side

0:03:13 > 0:03:17of the jet, so through next week cold and probably staying cold,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19widespread frost, wintry showers, too.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22But, yes, I must stress, it will be drier than it has been recently.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24How long does that last?

0:03:24 > 0:03:28Well, Helen Willetts will update you on all the details again tomorrow.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Your mum really needs to come in and see Doctor

0:03:34 > 0:03:36so we can give her a free prescription.
