0:00:03 > 0:00:06After a record-breaking mild but wet December,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09we've become accustomed to seeing spring bulbs in the garden,
0:00:09 > 0:00:11but all that warmth brought the moisture
0:00:11 > 0:00:14and the record-breaking floods as well,
0:00:14 > 0:00:16but I suspect any lying water still in the fields
0:00:16 > 0:00:18may freeze over over the next coming days.
0:00:18 > 0:00:21It's all change and, unfortunately,
0:00:21 > 0:00:24our spring bulbs may well get shrouded
0:00:24 > 0:00:25in some light snow for a time.
0:00:25 > 0:00:29More on that in just a moment, but let's move back to the here and now.
0:00:29 > 0:00:32Low pressure still in the driving seat
0:00:32 > 0:00:35and producing outbreaks of rain for Monday,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37the most heavy and persistent,
0:00:37 > 0:00:39perhaps, across the Peaks and Pennines
0:00:39 > 0:00:42with some hill snow here into north-east England
0:00:42 > 0:00:43and south-east Scotland.
0:00:43 > 0:00:45Elsewhere, it's a case of sunny spells
0:00:45 > 0:00:46and scattered showers,
0:00:46 > 0:00:48but some of those showers
0:00:48 > 0:00:49still a bit of a nuisance.
0:00:49 > 0:00:51Frequent ones into the Northern
0:00:51 > 0:00:52and Western Isles, in particular.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54It's going to feel quite cool
0:00:54 > 0:00:55here into the afternoon
0:00:55 > 0:00:57with a strong wind, four or five degrees,
0:00:57 > 0:00:58but some drier weather
0:00:58 > 0:00:59through the bulk of Scotland
0:00:59 > 0:01:01through the day. Sunny spells
0:01:01 > 0:01:02and showers into Northern Ireland.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05There's our rain I've already mentioned.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07Elsewhere, there will be some showers around,
0:01:07 > 0:01:09hopefully some brightness from time to time,
0:01:09 > 0:01:11but some of those showers pretty organised
0:01:11 > 0:01:13south of the M4 corridor
0:01:13 > 0:01:15with highs of six to nine degrees.
0:01:15 > 0:01:17The low does drift off into the North Sea
0:01:17 > 0:01:19Monday night into Tuesday,
0:01:19 > 0:01:21allowing the isobars to swing round
0:01:21 > 0:01:22to more of a northerly direction,
0:01:22 > 0:01:24and allowing the first signs
0:01:24 > 0:01:26of the icy blast to arrive.
0:01:26 > 0:01:28It's going to be a subtle transition,
0:01:28 > 0:01:30but it will feel colder through Tuesday
0:01:30 > 0:01:32and with each day this week as well.
0:01:32 > 0:01:34So, as we move into Tuesday,
0:01:34 > 0:01:36there'll be plenty of showers around.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38The winds coming from a northerly direction,
0:01:38 > 0:01:39pretty blustery,
0:01:39 > 0:01:41so it will take the edge off the feel of things,
0:01:41 > 0:01:43particularly in those showers -
0:01:43 > 0:01:46four to eight degrees the overall high.
0:01:46 > 0:01:47As we move into Tuesday night,
0:01:47 > 0:01:52this nose of high pressure starts to build.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55The isobars open out, the winds fall light,
0:01:55 > 0:01:57skies clear and, at this time of year,
0:01:57 > 0:01:59that can only mean one thing -
0:01:59 > 0:02:01those temperatures plummeting
0:02:01 > 0:02:02and we'll see minus five
0:02:02 > 0:02:03to minus nine degrees
0:02:03 > 0:02:05first thing on Wednesday morning.
0:02:05 > 0:02:07A real widespread hard frost
0:02:07 > 0:02:09not out of the question.
0:02:09 > 0:02:11At least there should be some sunshine,
0:02:11 > 0:02:12particularly through central
0:02:12 > 0:02:14and eastern areas on Wednesday.
0:02:14 > 0:02:15However, there is the potential
0:02:15 > 0:02:17for some rain to pull into the south-west
0:02:17 > 0:02:19and, as that bumps into the colder air,
0:02:19 > 0:02:21there is a level of uncertainty
0:02:21 > 0:02:23as to how much snow we could get at lower levels
0:02:23 > 0:02:26and, as that tracks that little bit further south
0:02:26 > 0:02:28and east overnight Wednesday into Thursday,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30we could wake up to a dusting of snow
0:02:30 > 0:02:33to the higher ground, maybe, to the Chilterns
0:02:33 > 0:02:34and across the south-east corner,
0:02:34 > 0:02:36but high pressure is starting to build
0:02:36 > 0:02:38and hopefully quieten things down
0:02:38 > 0:02:40as we move into the weekend.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42One thing's for certain this week -
0:02:42 > 0:02:43that cold, icy blast
0:02:43 > 0:02:46will start to dominate the weather story
0:02:46 > 0:02:48and that will be a shock to the system.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50I don't want you complaining about it.
0:02:50 > 0:02:51We've had that mild, wet weather
0:02:51 > 0:02:53that we've been desperate to get rid of.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55But there is uncertainty into the weekend.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57If the low pressure nudges
0:02:57 > 0:02:58a little bit further west,
0:02:58 > 0:03:00it'll keep enhancing the showers.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02If the high pressure builds,
0:03:02 > 0:03:04that should quieten things down
0:03:04 > 0:03:05for the weekend.
0:03:05 > 0:03:06It still stays cold,
0:03:06 > 0:03:08but frost will be more of an issue.
0:03:08 > 0:03:09But I suspect
0:03:09 > 0:03:10into the six to ten day period,
0:03:10 > 0:03:12it looks as though the cold weather
0:03:12 > 0:03:13is set to stay with us
0:03:13 > 0:03:15so sights like this with early morning frost
0:03:15 > 0:03:18is going to be quite widespread.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21It will feel colder in the outlook,
0:03:21 > 0:03:22frost and ice certainly an issue
0:03:22 > 0:03:24and any showers that we get
0:03:24 > 0:03:25could be of a wintry nature,
0:03:25 > 0:03:27even at lower levels for a time.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29It's getting pretty exciting
0:03:29 > 0:03:31and chilly with it. Take care.
0:03:32 > 0:03:32Well, there's a surprise.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35And it's DAME Judi, by the way.
0:03:35 > 0:03:36Halt!
