0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello there. Now that it's finally feels like winter,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06I suppose the next big question is

0:00:06 > 0:00:08how long is this cold snap going to last?

0:00:08 > 0:00:12There are signs of it turning milder again next week.

0:00:12 > 0:00:13More on that in a moment.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14First of all, why so cold?

0:00:14 > 0:00:15Well, it's all tied in

0:00:15 > 0:00:16to the jet stream -

0:00:16 > 0:00:19that fast-moving ribbon of air high up.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21The jet stream is to the south of the UK.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24We are on the cold side of the jet stream.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26That is why it is that much chillier

0:00:26 > 0:00:28and also why the low pressure systems

0:00:28 > 0:00:30that are surrounding us

0:00:30 > 0:00:32aren't particularly active.

0:00:32 > 0:00:33Remember, the jet streams

0:00:33 > 0:00:35drive those low-pressure systems,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37so these ones to the north of the jet stream

0:00:37 > 0:00:39are not especially intense.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42However, they are mixed in with the cold air,

0:00:42 > 0:00:43so they could well bring

0:00:43 > 0:00:45a little bit of sleet and snow.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Maybe some snow mixed in with the rain

0:00:48 > 0:00:49through Northern Ireland

0:00:49 > 0:00:50during Wednesday morning.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Then we'll see showers developing

0:00:52 > 0:00:54across western parts of England and Wales,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56with snow on the hills, potentially,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58of northern England later on on Wednesday.

0:00:58 > 0:00:59It is going to be another cold day.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01We start frosty, and temperatures peaking

0:01:01 > 0:01:03at 3 to maybe 9 Celsius

0:01:03 > 0:01:05in the south-west.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Now, things could get a bit more active snow-wise

0:01:07 > 0:01:09during the course of the evening rush hour

0:01:09 > 0:01:11across central parts of Scotland.

0:01:11 > 0:01:12A big question mark about exactly where

0:01:12 > 0:01:13this weather front sits,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15but it could bring some significant snow

0:01:15 > 0:01:18for a time during the course of the Wednesday evening.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Still on Thursday,

0:01:19 > 0:01:20that low is still around.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21So some snow over the hills

0:01:21 > 0:01:23of northern England and North Wales

0:01:23 > 0:01:24on Thursday morning,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26and possibly a little bit of sleet and snow

0:01:26 > 0:01:28mixed in across eastern England.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31It will be a cold day here and a wet day,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33whereas elsewhere, actually bar a few wintry showers,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35many places dry and bright.

0:01:35 > 0:01:36But, again, it is cold with a frost again

0:01:36 > 0:01:39on Thursday night into Friday morning.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41That's low-pressure system scoots away.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Follow the isobars for Friday -

0:01:43 > 0:01:44they are pointing all the way to Iceland.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47So it's cold air, again, flooding its way southwards,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49bringing some showers where we've got the winds

0:01:49 > 0:01:51coming in from the sea.

0:01:51 > 0:01:52North-west Scotland, North-west England

0:01:52 > 0:01:53and North Wales.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56The showers on Friday could well be of snow,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58even to low levels. For many, though,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00it's a sunny, dry, cold day.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03As will Saturday be. Morning frost, yes.

0:02:03 > 0:02:04There could be some stubborn fog patches

0:02:04 > 0:02:06around on Saturday,

0:02:06 > 0:02:07but for most, it's dry and bright.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08Just a few wintry showers likely.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10More on Saturday across the east

0:02:10 > 0:02:11rather than the west.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13High pressure is building all the while

0:02:13 > 0:02:15through the course of the weekend.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18It's definitely, definitely the dominant feature

0:02:18 > 0:02:19as we go into Sunday.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Again, there could be one or two showers

0:02:21 > 0:02:22coming into parts of the east,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24which could have some sleet and snow.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26But the main themes, after such a wet start to the year,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28is the weekend looks largely dry,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31but it will still be cold with morning frosts

0:02:31 > 0:02:34and temperatures in single figures,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Then into next week,

0:02:37 > 0:02:38for the early part of the week.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40The cold air still in play.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42So it's largely dry with morning frosts

0:02:42 > 0:02:44for Monday and Tuesday.

0:02:44 > 0:02:45Then, the big question marks.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47The high pressure next week

0:02:47 > 0:02:48will finally get pushed away

0:02:48 > 0:02:51by weather systems again returning from the Atlantic.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Back to the norm, if you like.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55But when these changes happen,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57there is always big uncertainties -

0:02:57 > 0:02:59how far in will these weather fronts get

0:02:59 > 0:03:00by the middle of the week?

0:03:00 > 0:03:03As they do arrive, bringing the moisture,

0:03:03 > 0:03:04hitting the cold air,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06could they provide, at least for a time,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08some heavier snowfall?

0:03:08 > 0:03:09So there are big question marks

0:03:09 > 0:03:11about next week.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13The things we definitely know -

0:03:13 > 0:03:15a cold, largely dry, frosty start

0:03:15 > 0:03:17with some sunshine around on Monday,

0:03:17 > 0:03:18but there could be some fog too.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20It will turn milder and wetter

0:03:20 > 0:03:21through the week.

0:03:21 > 0:03:22The timing at this stage,

0:03:22 > 0:03:23rather uncertain.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24We will firm up on the details

0:03:24 > 0:03:26over the next couple of days.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27I'll see you again tomorrow. Goodbye.

0:03:30 > 0:03:31People come to Shetland

0:03:31 > 0:03:35because we're out on a big rock in the middle of the North Sea.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37They think this isn't part of real life.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Tell me whatever it is you know.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45I'm telling you he never got off that ferry.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48There's somebody trying to stop me from doing my job.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51I can get inside your life. I can do a lot of damage.
