0:00:03 > 0:00:04Hello, thanks for joining me

0:00:04 > 0:00:06for this extended look at the weather forecast

0:00:06 > 0:00:08over the next five to ten days or so.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10There is considerable uncertainty in our forecast,

0:00:10 > 0:00:12even in the shorter range, in fact -

0:00:12 > 0:00:16partly down to the fact that we've got a very unusual Ex-Hurricane Alex

0:00:16 > 0:00:19out in the Atlantic. Very unusual for January.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21It won't affect our weather directly,

0:00:21 > 0:00:23it's heading northwards towards Greenland,

0:00:23 > 0:00:26but what it is doing is adding extra energy into the jet stream,

0:00:26 > 0:00:28the driving force of our weather, really.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30And that's meaning more energy in the jet stream,

0:00:30 > 0:00:32more complications for the computer models,

0:00:32 > 0:00:36so there's big disagreement between computer models about exactly

0:00:36 > 0:00:38what is going to happen in our weather over the next ten days or so.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40But we're certainly in the cold air at the moment,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42so a chilly weekend ahead.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45During Saturday, many areas having a crisp, bright day.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Eastern counties of England more prone to seeing some wintry showers

0:00:48 > 0:00:49coming in from the North Sea.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53Sleet and snow inland, likely to be rain around the coast.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Temperatures about one to three in the North, further south,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57five, six or seven for most of us.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00But a largely dry, very pleasant day to come, despite the fact

0:01:00 > 0:01:02that temperatures are certainly on the chilly side.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Then later on, Saturday night into Sunday,

0:01:05 > 0:01:07we see a period of rain, sleet and snow

0:01:07 > 0:01:09across the north-west of the country.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10The detail is still quite uncertain

0:01:10 > 0:01:12on exactly where we'll see any wintry flurry,

0:01:12 > 0:01:15so keep tuned to the forecast over the next few days.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Certainly a very chilly start to Sunday morning.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Now, through the day on Sunday,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23we have got high pressure out towards the south and the east of the UK.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25A frontal system here in the Atlantic,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27trying to nudge its way in from the west,

0:01:27 > 0:01:29but it bumps into that high pressure,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32so most places yet again on Sunday, we will see a largely dry day.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Likely to be some sleet and snow flurries across parts of Wales,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38perhaps into the Midlands, up towards western Scotland.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Eastern areas likely to stay dry, crisp and bright.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Two or three degrees here.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45But you'll notice that those temperatures from the south-west

0:01:45 > 0:01:47just starting to nudge up by a few degrees.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Then late on Sunday, and on into Monday,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52this front starts to head into western areas.

0:01:52 > 0:01:53Looks like perhaps it may stall

0:01:53 > 0:01:57and many eastern areas keeping under the influence of higher pressure,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00so likely on Monday that we'll see crisp, dry conditions

0:02:00 > 0:02:02continuing in the East, just two or three degrees.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Whereas further west, some rain, some sleet and some snow.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08And a similar story into Tuesday,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11as this frontal system tries to edge in from the west or the south-west.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Things will turn milder and wetter,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16but as that sleet and rain bumps into the colder air, we could see,

0:02:16 > 0:02:20through the middle part of the week, some disruptive snowfall.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Again, the details are very uncertain,

0:02:22 > 0:02:23but through the middle of the week,

0:02:23 > 0:02:27we could well see a period of sleet and some potentially heavy snow,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29before it likely turns back to rain again.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31So, this is the middle part of the week.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Wednesday, we're likely to see this frontal system probably fizzling out,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37dying a death through the middle portion of the country.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40But before it does, some sleet and some potentially heavy snow possible

0:02:40 > 0:02:43as it moves its way gradually northwards and eastwards,

0:02:43 > 0:02:44but temperatures recovering

0:02:44 > 0:02:47by the time we get to Wednesday and on into Thursday.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49So, late next week now - it's likely

0:02:49 > 0:02:52that we're going to be having an area of high pressure once again,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55starting to build towards the east of the country,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58keeping things fairly quiet and fairly dry too.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Also keeping these frontal systems at bay out in the Atlantic,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02So high pressure probably in charge,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04particularly for many eastern, north-eastern areas

0:03:04 > 0:03:06through the latter part of next week.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09But eventually, when we move on to next weekend,

0:03:09 > 0:03:12It looks likely that high pressure edges away towards the east,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15so that will open the doors for fronts to head in from the Atlantic.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17This is a very simplified representation, of course,

0:03:17 > 0:03:20of the fronts coming in from the Atlantic.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22But the outlook through the next six to ten days or so -

0:03:22 > 0:03:26a cold start to the period, a risk of some disruptive snow,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28turning milder and more unsettled

0:03:28 > 0:03:31as we head towards the end of the period. Bye-bye.
