0:00:03 > 0:00:04Well, thanks for joining me.

0:00:04 > 0:00:07Let's find out how much longer this cold weather is going to last.

0:00:07 > 0:00:09We'll also have a detailed look at the jet stream

0:00:09 > 0:00:12pattern across the UK a couple of times during the weather report.

0:00:12 > 0:00:13This is the here and now, though.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16So, cold weather across many areas of the UK, it's been a very,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19very frosty couple of nights,

0:00:19 > 0:00:21more to come tomorrow during the course of Wednesday.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Even some freezing fog lingering around,

0:00:23 > 0:00:26for example across the West Midlands, perhaps parts of Wales.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29But for most of us it's going to be a bright,

0:00:29 > 0:00:31crisp day with temperatures around three to four degrees.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35A little bit milder there in Northern Ireland, perhaps seven degrees.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37And then Wednesday night into Thursday,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40another widespread frost across the country,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42some more fog forming, this time across eastern areas,

0:00:42 > 0:00:46and I think that's pretty much it, the following nights will be little

0:00:46 > 0:00:49bit milder, because a change already taking place early Thursday.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Weather fronts and the milder air here in the Atlantic

0:00:52 > 0:00:54is ready to rush our way,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56so that means that across many western areas

0:00:56 > 0:00:59right from the word go on Thursday, at least the thinking is,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02the clouds will increase, we'll have some light outbreaks of rain.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Southerly winds. That means that the temperatures might even get up to

0:01:05 > 0:01:08double figures across one or two areas, for example there in Plymouth.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11But the east of the country still hangs onto

0:01:11 > 0:01:14some of that cold air left over. With some sunshine around as well,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17pretty chilly there in Newcastle at three degrees.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Let's have our first look at the jet stream. For the end of the week.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22You can see it's racing across the Atlantic,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25sending these weather fronts in our direction,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27so the spells of heavy rain, but then it moves towards the north,

0:01:27 > 0:01:29so it's going to deflect most of the wind

0:01:29 > 0:01:32and rain to the north-west of the British Isles.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34But I think all of us, at least on Friday

0:01:34 > 0:01:37while get a dose of some rain from this weather front here.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Let's have a look at this weather front in a little more detail,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43So here it is in the morning it's crossing the country, it's a

0:01:43 > 0:01:46cold front but the air behind it isn't that cold, it's actually

0:01:46 > 0:01:50relatively mild, look at that, temperatures up to 11 in Belfast,

0:01:50 > 0:01:5112 degrees in Plymouth.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55And this mild bulge of air which is coming out of the southern climes

0:01:55 > 0:01:59here, will establish itself across the UK during the course

0:01:59 > 0:02:04of the weekend, shunting that colder, heavier, denser air towards the east.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06So, through Saturday,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08once one weather front is out of the way, we are in between

0:02:08 > 0:02:11weather systems, and actually Saturday doesn't look too bad.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14There will be some sunshine around particularly across eastern areas

0:02:14 > 0:02:17here. It might be a little bit chilly in the morning

0:02:17 > 0:02:19but probably frost-free for most of us.

0:02:19 > 0:02:2111 degrees across the south

0:02:21 > 0:02:24and then by the time we get to Sunday the weather fronts zip

0:02:24 > 0:02:27to the north-west of us, bringing rain, possibly gale-force winds,

0:02:27 > 0:02:31and look at that, we haven't seen that in a little while,

0:02:31 > 0:02:3413 degrees for Belfast, that is going to feel on the mild side.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Now, let's talk about the jet stream later next week.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Because it is a bit of a complicated pattern.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42The basic message is, from a pattern like this,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44and this is the jet stream next week,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47where you see the jet coming from the south, that's where our air is coming

0:02:47 > 0:02:50from, our weather is coming from, this is where the mild air lives.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53But the problem with this jet stream is - it's got quite a sharp dip here

0:02:53 > 0:02:55and then a really enormous ridge there.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59When you get this pattern, the jet stream can sometimes fall apart,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02or at least the pattern falls apart and it can come back on itself

0:03:02 > 0:03:04with the weather coming in from the east.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06So there's just a risk that later next week

0:03:06 > 0:03:09we could see some cold air coming in,

0:03:09 > 0:03:12but it's more likely that the mild air is going to win,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16coming in from the south-west being brought by that jet stream.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19So I think the summary for next week, there'll be some spells of rain

0:03:19 > 0:03:22but also windows of opportunity with some sunshine.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25And generally speaking I think it is going to be frost-free.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29So a change on the way in the next two or three days. Bye-bye.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37It all started with the discovery of one enormous thigh bone.
