0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello there. The weather here in the UK is feeling a lot less wintry
0:00:05 > 0:00:07than it did earlier on in the week.
0:00:07 > 0:00:10The same can't be said for the other side of the Atlantic.
0:00:10 > 0:00:11Across eastern parts of the US,
0:00:11 > 0:00:13we've got a major winter storm,
0:00:13 > 0:00:15which is pushing its way northwards and eastwards,
0:00:15 > 0:00:18bringing exceptionally heavy snowfall
0:00:18 > 0:00:20combined with freezing rain,
0:00:20 > 0:00:21very strong gusty winds too
0:00:21 > 0:00:23so blizzard conditions developing
0:00:23 > 0:00:25over the next 24 hours or so.
0:00:25 > 0:00:29We could see up to around 45-60cm of snow,
0:00:29 > 0:00:31more than 2ft of snow in some areas,
0:00:31 > 0:00:34including Washington DC and for New York, too,
0:00:34 > 0:00:37some outbreaks of heavy snow on the cards.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Severe travel disruption quite likely
0:00:39 > 0:00:41over the next 24-36 hours or so.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43If we move across the Atlantic,
0:00:43 > 0:00:44you can see that cold plunge of air
0:00:44 > 0:00:46that's across the north-east states,
0:00:46 > 0:00:49but, across the UK, warm air piling in from the south
0:00:49 > 0:00:51so a mild weekend ahead, particularly during
0:00:51 > 0:00:53the second half of the weekend.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55Saturday dawns on a dry note for most of us.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57Some mist, fog and low cloud developing
0:00:57 > 0:00:59across some southern areas for a time
0:00:59 > 0:01:00and, later in the day,
0:01:00 > 0:01:02we'll see rain pushing in across parts
0:01:02 > 0:01:04of Northern Ireland, Wales and the south-west.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06Ahead of that, temperatures typically
0:01:06 > 0:01:07around about nine or ten degrees
0:01:07 > 0:01:08so it should feel pleasant enough
0:01:08 > 0:01:10with light winds some sunny spells.
0:01:10 > 0:01:11Later on Saturday
0:01:11 > 0:01:13and overnight into Sunday,
0:01:13 > 0:01:14we're going to see an area of rain
0:01:14 > 0:01:15making its way west to east
0:01:15 > 0:01:17across the country, not particularly heavy,
0:01:17 > 0:01:20but it will be a murky start to Sunday -
0:01:20 > 0:01:22a lot of cloud around and some outbreaks of rain
0:01:22 > 0:01:25and things will be turning exceptionally mild through
0:01:25 > 0:01:27the course of Sunday, the air drawn in
0:01:27 > 0:01:29from the south and the south-west.
0:01:29 > 0:01:30So it will be a grey start to the day,
0:01:30 > 0:01:33a cloudy day compared to Saturday for most,
0:01:33 > 0:01:34some hill fog and outbreaks
0:01:34 > 0:01:36of light rain and drizzle,
0:01:36 > 0:01:37particularly around coasts and hills
0:01:37 > 0:01:38in the north and the west.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40Eastern areas, that's where we're likely to see
0:01:40 > 0:01:42the best in the breaks in that cloud
0:01:42 > 0:01:43and where we see sunshine
0:01:43 > 0:01:45pushing through the clouds,
0:01:45 > 0:01:47we could see temperatures of 13-15 degrees,
0:01:47 > 0:01:49well above average for the time of year.
0:01:49 > 0:01:50On into Monday,
0:01:50 > 0:01:52some uncertainty about this system,
0:01:52 > 0:01:53but it does look like we'll see
0:01:53 > 0:01:55an area of low pressure
0:01:55 > 0:01:56bringing heavy rain to western areas,
0:01:56 > 0:01:58particularly on the hills
0:01:58 > 0:02:00and strong gusty winds for a time too.
0:02:00 > 0:02:01So, a wet and windy day on Monday.
0:02:01 > 0:02:03Tuesday starts off drier,
0:02:03 > 0:02:04but this low pressure system,
0:02:04 > 0:02:07this is the remnants of the storm in the US
0:02:07 > 0:02:09that brought all that heavy snowfall
0:02:09 > 0:02:10and blizzard conditions.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12It will move across the Atlantic
0:02:12 > 0:02:14so it won't be falling as snow by the time
0:02:14 > 0:02:15it gets to our shores on Tuesday,
0:02:15 > 0:02:16it'll be falling as rain,
0:02:16 > 0:02:18but we've still got some strong gusty winds
0:02:18 > 0:02:20associated with this storm system
0:02:20 > 0:02:22and it could bring some localised flooding
0:02:22 > 0:02:24in areas where we've already got saturated ground
0:02:24 > 0:02:26towards the north and the west.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28Through the middle part of the week for Wednesday,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30we've got another low pressure system
0:02:30 > 0:02:32heading in from the Atlantic.
0:02:32 > 0:02:35So, a breezy day across England and Wales,
0:02:35 > 0:02:37perhaps parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland
0:02:37 > 0:02:39could also see some brisk winds
0:02:39 > 0:02:40and some outbreaks of rain too.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43Still pretty mild at around 13 degrees,
0:02:43 > 0:02:44but, throughout the course of the week,
0:02:44 > 0:02:46we'll see fluctuating temperatures.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49This is a simplified representation of what the jet stream's doing
0:02:49 > 0:02:52in the upper atmosphere through the middle to the end of next week.
0:02:52 > 0:02:54You can see sometimes we're to the north of the jet stream,
0:02:54 > 0:02:56bringing cooler conditions.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59At other times, the UK lies to the south of the jet stream,
0:02:59 > 0:03:01bringing a milder spell of weather
0:03:01 > 0:03:03and that jet stream will deliver outbreaks of rain
0:03:03 > 0:03:05and wind with low pressure systems
0:03:05 > 0:03:07moving their way across the country at times as well,
0:03:07 > 0:03:11interspersed with fresher, cooler and quieter spells of weather.
0:03:11 > 0:03:12So, as we look ahead
0:03:12 > 0:03:14through the course of next week,
0:03:14 > 0:03:16things are looking changeable,
0:03:16 > 0:03:17fairly unsettled.
0:03:17 > 0:03:18At times, there'll be spells
0:03:18 > 0:03:19of wind and rain,
0:03:19 > 0:03:22interspersed with drier, clearer conditions
0:03:22 > 0:03:24with a chance of frost and ice overnight
0:03:24 > 0:03:25and there could be a return
0:03:25 > 0:03:27to some hill snow in the north and the west.
0:03:27 > 0:03:30We'll keep you up to date right here. Bye-bye.
