0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello. Before I look ahead, it's worth remembering that a week

0:00:05 > 0:00:07or so back we had some really cold,

0:00:07 > 0:00:09wintry weather with hard frosts and some snow around.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Seems a distant memory now, doesn't it?

0:00:11 > 0:00:14And the prospects through the rest of this week are for further

0:00:14 > 0:00:16quite wet and windy weather at times.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20I'll show you a satellite sequence for the entirety of the last week,

0:00:20 > 0:00:23and it just goes to reinforce the fact that it's been

0:00:23 > 0:00:26so disturbed, with bands of wet and windy weather

0:00:26 > 0:00:30charging in off the Atlantic on a very strong jet stream.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33And with plenty more of this stuff to come through the rest of this

0:00:33 > 0:00:35week, concerns about flooding will be high,

0:00:35 > 0:00:38and we'll keep a very close eye on things through the rest

0:00:38 > 0:00:41of this week in conjunction, of course, with the Environment Agency.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Certainly a pretty wet scene across southern areas

0:00:43 > 0:00:46on Wednesday, some bouts of quite heavy rain, some strong winds, too,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48which could cause some problems.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Further north, in contrast, it'll tend to dry out,

0:00:50 > 0:00:52lighter winds, so there will be wintry showers

0:00:52 > 0:00:54feeding into the Highlands of Scotland.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Quite a contrast in temperatures,

0:00:56 > 0:01:0011 to 13 degrees across the south despite the wind and the rain.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Despite the sunshine further north, it'll be a lot colder,

0:01:02 > 0:01:05five or six degrees typical through the afternoon

0:01:05 > 0:01:07for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09As we head into the evening and night, so these fronts clear away.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11They take the rain with them.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Behind that, a ridge of high pressure, clear skies for many.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17In fact, by Thursday morning this could be the scene quite

0:01:17 > 0:01:21widely up and down the UK, a frosty start to a bright

0:01:21 > 0:01:24and crisp morning, actually, for many of us, probably one of the best

0:01:24 > 0:01:27days of the week, in fact, certainly for England and Wales.

0:01:27 > 0:01:28Lighter winds, plenty of sunshine.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Already, though, signs of change to the north-west,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33with the next weather system powering in, bringing wind

0:01:33 > 0:01:37and rain again to Northern Ireland and Scotland. A chilly-feeling day.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39We might just scrape ten degrees in London,

0:01:39 > 0:01:42but more typically around about six to eight degrees.

0:01:42 > 0:01:43So, looking further ahead, then,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46Thursday night into Friday, it's business as usual,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49with further active frontal systems coming off the Atlantic,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51strong winds and some pretty heavy rain,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54and for the likes of Snowdonia, the Cumbrian fells,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56the Southern Uplands quite a lot of rain expected.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59There are already warnings in force from the Met Office,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02with the risk of flooding for sure.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Eventually drying up to the north-west,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07and the rain taking all day to reach the more southern areas.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10But as we look from Friday into Saturday, the rain will arrive here.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Behind that, though, it turns clearer

0:02:13 > 0:02:16and colder again on Saturday, quite a chilly wind

0:02:16 > 0:02:19developing across Scotland and Northern Ireland in particular.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21That wind will give some wintry showers.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Quite a lot of snow over the Highlands of Scotland.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Those weather fronts perhaps lingering

0:02:25 > 0:02:27across the far south-east well into the day.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29But it will be chillier-feeling for most places,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31particularly in the north.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Into Sunday, perhaps a frosty start, and then guess what?

0:02:33 > 0:02:36The next set of fronts comes in from the west,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39providing a pretty wet and windy end to the weekend across western

0:02:39 > 0:02:42areas, that rain eventually spreading its way further eastwards

0:02:42 > 0:02:45but introducing higher temperatures.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48And the temperatures flip-flopping all the way through the week

0:02:48 > 0:02:49and, indeed, beyond.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52We get bouts of warmer air followed by bouts of chillier air,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56and then the next system comes in and it's warm and cold again.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00But with westerly winds, that cold air is never particularly cold.

0:03:00 > 0:03:01As I mentioned yesterday,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03it's modified by the relatively warm Atlantic.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07And with a very strong jet stream driving those weather systems,

0:03:07 > 0:03:11expect more of the same for the next week and, indeed, perhaps beyond.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14So, looking into February, plenty more wind and rain, for sure,

0:03:14 > 0:03:16with those westerly winds dominant.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19It could well be, as we head towards the middle of the month,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22that changes around the globe, including, would you believe,

0:03:22 > 0:03:24changes in the stratosphere, may change

0:03:24 > 0:03:29the behaviour of the jet stream, and it might start to turn colder.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30Louise Lear will update you again tomorrow.
