0:00:02 > 0:00:05It's pretty fair to say we've seen a return to more changeable,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08fickle weather in recent days with a couple of days of milder weather

0:00:08 > 0:00:10and then a short, sharp colder snap.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12But unfortunately the wet and windy weather

0:00:12 > 0:00:15through yesterday brought some localised flooding,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17as denoted by our weather watcher's picture

0:00:17 > 0:00:18close to the Scottish borders.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21And there's more wet and extremely windy weather to come

0:00:21 > 0:00:23as we move right into the weekend

0:00:23 > 0:00:28with low pressure systems crossing the UK, bringing more rain and wind.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30That will be the story through Thursday.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31Up into the far north-west,

0:00:31 > 0:00:34showers merging together for longer spells of rain.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37But after a chilly start, there will be some sunshine for England

0:00:37 > 0:00:39and Wales, despite the cloud thickening into the afternoon

0:00:39 > 0:00:41the further west you are.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43But the best of the sun, really, across the Midlands

0:00:43 > 0:00:46and the south with temperatures recovering after that cold start

0:00:46 > 0:00:48to highs of 8-10 degrees.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Further north, wetter and windier weather continues.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53In the far north and west, seven or eight the high.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55And the winds remain a feature,

0:00:55 > 0:00:58with severe gales likely to develop through the night.

0:00:58 > 0:00:59And then, as we move into Friday,

0:00:59 > 0:01:03we could see storm-force gusts of wind for a time across the far

0:01:03 > 0:01:05north of Scotland accompanied by some very heavy,

0:01:05 > 0:01:09persistent rain - we'll need to keep a close eye on the localised

0:01:09 > 0:01:13flooding potential across southern Scotland, northern England

0:01:13 > 0:01:14and north Wales.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17But further south it stays windy, cloudy with a few showers,

0:01:17 > 0:01:21brighter but somewhat colder weather conditions perhaps developing

0:01:21 > 0:01:23into the far north and west.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Here, single figures, 12 degrees the overall high.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29As we move out of Friday into Saturday

0:01:29 > 0:01:32we could for a time see some heavy and persistent rain clearing its way

0:01:32 > 0:01:36south and east and the timing of that is a little uncertain.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Behind it the winds swing more round to a north-westerly, so again colder

0:01:40 > 0:01:44and again any showers will fall as snow to the tops of the mountains.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Once that rain has cleared away it will be milder to the south,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49colder to the north.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52But that mild air is set to continue down to the south as we move

0:01:52 > 0:01:54out of Saturday into Sunday.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57A weather front continues to ripple or rollercoaster north

0:01:57 > 0:02:01and south across the country, introducing more wet weather

0:02:01 > 0:02:02and a milder feel here.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06On Sunday, cooler and somewhat showery into the far north and west.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09You can see by the difference in the weather arrows -

0:02:09 > 0:02:11a south-westerly, milder flow down to the south,

0:02:11 > 0:02:15a cooler north-westerly flow perhaps into the far north.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17As we move out of Monday we see a return back to

0:02:17 > 0:02:20more of a south-westerly, generally. Again, a mild theme.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22There will be a fair amount of cloud

0:02:22 > 0:02:25and we continue to see some showers up into the far north and west.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28But things will start to change as we look into

0:02:28 > 0:02:30the six to ten day period.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33We have seen these areas of low pressure crossing the UK,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35dragging in the milder wind,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38but into next week, as the low moves away, it's going to allow

0:02:38 > 0:02:42that cold air to dig just that little bit further south.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45We could repeat the process through the latter stages

0:02:45 > 0:02:48of the ten day period but the cold air set to return.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51And the reason for that is the jet stream is just that little

0:02:51 > 0:02:54bit further south and so each time,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57that's allowing that colder air to dig further south and more of

0:02:57 > 0:03:01the wetter, windier weather continue to push across the near continent.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03So basically, what does that mean for us?

0:03:03 > 0:03:05It means that the start of February looks likely to be

0:03:05 > 0:03:07colder than the end of January.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09There will be some wind and rain around

0:03:09 > 0:03:12but there's a potential of seeing perhaps more of

0:03:12 > 0:03:16a wintry flavour to our showers as that cold air continues to dominate.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19That's how it's looking, I'll be back with further details tomorrow.
