0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hello. Storm Gertrude may become yesterday's fish and chip paper,

0:00:06 > 0:00:10but I'm sure residents of Shetland won't forget her in a hurry

0:00:10 > 0:00:14because we had the strongest gusts of wind for 16 years,

0:00:14 > 0:00:16in excess of 100 miles an hour.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19We also had severe gales generally across central-southern Scotland,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Northern Ireland and northern England.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24And there's more wet and windy weather to come.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27On Sunday, we could see more wet weather

0:00:27 > 0:00:29bumping into cold air into the north

0:00:29 > 0:00:30and bringing snow,

0:00:30 > 0:00:32before another significant area

0:00:32 > 0:00:34of low pressure develops on Monday.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36This one may become another named storm.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38If that happens, it'll be Henry.

0:00:38 > 0:00:39That's a long way off.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41For Saturday, it looks like

0:00:41 > 0:00:42we'll see most sunshine

0:00:42 > 0:00:44in central and southern England,

0:00:44 > 0:00:45with wintry showers

0:00:45 > 0:00:48continuing across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50A wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52There'll certainly be lying snow

0:00:52 > 0:00:53as temperatures struggle.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Milder in the sunshine to the south,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57but even so, colder than of late,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59with 6 or 8 degrees,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01the real cold air sitting to the north

0:01:01 > 0:01:03with 3 or 4 as a maximum.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06They'll still be further snow showers for a time

0:01:06 > 0:01:08as we move out of Saturday.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10Ice could be a hazard as well on the roads

0:01:10 > 0:01:13before we start to see more cloud and rain

0:01:13 > 0:01:15gathering into the South and West.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17This will continue to push north and east.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19On the leading edge, for a time

0:01:19 > 0:01:21across northern England and into Scotland,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24there'll be snow before it turns back to rain.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25As the rain clears,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28a legacy of cloud, drab afternoon.

0:01:28 > 0:01:29But a milder afternoon,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31with 11-13 degrees the high.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32Still pretty cold

0:01:32 > 0:01:34in the far north-east of Scotland,

0:01:34 > 0:01:353 or 4 degrees.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Out of Sunday,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39that frontal system drifts away.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41But then that significant area

0:01:41 > 0:01:42of low pressure moves in.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44And just like Gertrude,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47the strongest winds will be centred

0:01:47 > 0:01:48to the southern flank of that low.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Centred across the northern half of the country.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53There'll also be significant rain,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55which may lead to localised flooding.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57Certainly one to keep an eye on.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Another mild but windy day further south,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03with temperatures again into the mid teens.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05As we move out of Monday into Tuesday,

0:02:05 > 0:02:08things get quieter, a bit colder as well,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10with a few wintry showers returning

0:02:10 > 0:02:11into the far North and West.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13But at least there should be

0:02:13 > 0:02:14dry, sunny weather around.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Just a slight question mark

0:02:16 > 0:02:17as to where this rain is sitting

0:02:17 > 0:02:18through the Channel coast

0:02:18 > 0:02:20and whether it will lap on

0:02:20 > 0:02:22to the sudden portion of the UK.

0:02:22 > 0:02:23Let's look further afield.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26We've got that significant area of low pressure on Monday

0:02:26 > 0:02:28which we need to clear out of the way.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Once it does, it allows cold air

0:02:30 > 0:02:32to become more dominant,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34so through the middle of next week

0:02:34 > 0:02:36we could see a more prolonged, lengthier cold snap.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39The question is just when the milder air

0:02:39 > 0:02:42will start to push back in.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44The reason we'll see this lengthier cold snap is

0:02:44 > 0:02:47the jet stream will be sitting south of the UK

0:02:47 > 0:02:51and that would allow cold air to dig that little bit further south.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53But by the middle to the end of next week,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56the jet stream looks likely to push further north again,

0:02:56 > 0:02:58allowing a more mobile flow

0:02:58 > 0:03:01and allowing milder, south-westerly air to come in.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03A lot of uncertainty as to the timings of

0:03:03 > 0:03:05when this is likely to happen.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07So, through the middle of the week,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09we may see some frost through the night,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11but hopefully some lovely spells of sunshine as well.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14By day, it looks quite promising.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16A lovely first week of February.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19However, by the end of the week, things will start to change,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22and once the jet stream moves further north,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25we'll see certainly more in the way cloud

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and the potential for more wet weather to come.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Ugh! Never mind, whatever you're doing, enjoy your weekend.

0:03:33 > 0:03:34Is there any chance at all

0:03:34 > 0:03:35that you might be pregnant?

0:03:37 > 0:03:39You should be ashamed of yourself, you little madam.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42We want to minimise the chance of contamination

0:03:42 > 0:03:44but we should be ready.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47I appear to have won a meal in the West End.
