0:00:03 > 0:00:05Come the weekend, some of us may be experiencing

0:00:05 > 0:00:06a different side to winter.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08Over the last 24 hours or so,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10it's the wild and windy weather, courtesy of Storm Imogen,

0:00:10 > 0:00:12which has dominated the weather story.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14You weather watchers have sent in

0:00:14 > 0:00:16your pictures - dramatic seas

0:00:16 > 0:00:17crashing onto the coastline.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20Inland, some significant damage -

0:00:20 > 0:00:22felled trees and power cuts.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Compare that with tranquil conditions

0:00:25 > 0:00:26across the heart of Scotland,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29this picture taken from the Trossachs.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31That's because the heart of Scotland

0:00:31 > 0:00:32was in the eye of the storm.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34The strongest winds were to the south.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Imogen is now moving out of the way,

0:00:36 > 0:00:37taking the strongest of the winds with her,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40still quite blustery as we go through Tuesday,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42especially across some south-western areas,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44but not the really strong, damaging winds

0:00:44 > 0:00:46you saw on Monday - good news, isn't it?

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Some sunshine to be had

0:00:48 > 0:00:50with a wetter zone in the middle,

0:00:50 > 0:00:51and some mountain snow.

0:00:51 > 0:00:52Some wintry showers

0:00:52 > 0:00:54across the Highlands of Scotland, too,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56but through the central belt,

0:00:56 > 0:00:57plenty of sunshine, nice day.

0:00:57 > 0:00:58Temperatures 6 or 7 degrees.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00This is 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Rain across Northern Ireland and southern Scotland

0:01:02 > 0:01:04will drift its way southwards,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06through parts of north-west England and Wales.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07Some snow over high ground,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09but shouldn't cause too many issues.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10Some sunshine further south -

0:01:10 > 0:01:12as I said, the winds nothing like

0:01:12 > 0:01:13as strong as they were on Monday.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14Still quite blustery,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16and those winds will carry some showers

0:01:16 > 0:01:18into south-western areas in particular.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Cold in that wind,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21temperatures just 4, 5, 6 degrees.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Chilly start to Wednesday, some frost, some ice around

0:01:23 > 0:01:25across northern areas in particular.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Wednesday actually looks like a nice day.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Many of us will be dry and bright, with some sunshine.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Some wintry showers across the far north-east

0:01:31 > 0:01:34and some showers across the far south-west,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36but in-between, as I say, mostly fine and dry.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38As we look towards the end of the week,

0:01:38 > 0:01:40we look to the west, the next area of low pressure.

0:01:40 > 0:01:41This is no Imogen,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43not the damaging winds which we've seen,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45but still the prospect of a wet end to the week,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48initially across the more south-western areas,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50how quickly that rain progresses across other areas

0:01:50 > 0:01:52is still quite uncertain, but it looks like Friday

0:01:52 > 0:01:55will be a cloudy day with a greater prospect of rain

0:01:55 > 0:01:57compared with Thursday.

0:01:57 > 0:01:58Here's a snapshot for Friday -

0:01:58 > 0:02:00don't take its position too literally.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02It could be further north, it could be further south,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05but it looks like the best chance of staying dry

0:02:05 > 0:02:07is across northern parts of the UK.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08None too warm, mind you -

0:02:08 > 0:02:09a nagging easterly wind developing

0:02:09 > 0:02:12and that will be a theme as we hit the weekend.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14No sooner do we lose one area of low pressure

0:02:14 > 0:02:15that another one looks like coming

0:02:15 > 0:02:16to take its place - again,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18it's the more southern parts of the UK

0:02:18 > 0:02:20most likely to see the persistent rain,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23whereas further north again will be drier

0:02:23 > 0:02:25but once more, that chilly wind.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27That is really the set-up through this weekend.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30We will have low pressure, bringing outbreaks of rain,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32most likely to the southern areas,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35whereas further north will have relatively higher pressure

0:02:35 > 0:02:36and lengthier dry spells.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38It's also the dividing line

0:02:38 > 0:02:40between relatively cold air to the north,

0:02:40 > 0:02:42relatively mild air to the south.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Now, that's important, because at the dividing line,

0:02:45 > 0:02:46we have got a bit of a knife edge.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47Inject moisture into that

0:02:47 > 0:02:50and there is the potential for rain to turn to snow.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52There's a very real possibility

0:02:52 > 0:02:54through this weekend of some snow.

0:02:54 > 0:02:55The question is, where?

0:02:55 > 0:02:57The location of the highest snow risk

0:02:57 > 0:02:59is still unclear, because the computer models

0:02:59 > 0:03:01are toing and froing with this

0:03:01 > 0:03:03and they won't firm up for another couple of days,

0:03:03 > 0:03:04but watch this space.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06As we look into early next week,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08it does look as if cold air will dominate,

0:03:08 > 0:03:09deflecting the jet stream to the south

0:03:09 > 0:03:11and that means taking most of the rain

0:03:11 > 0:03:14and snow-bearing weather systems with it.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17So probably a largely dry start next week,

0:03:17 > 0:03:18some fine, crisp weather,

0:03:18 > 0:03:19some frost around.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22How long it lasts before the jet stream powers through

0:03:22 > 0:03:24and brings a return to mild, wet and windy weather

0:03:24 > 0:03:26from the west is still uncertain.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28I'll hope to shed some more light

0:03:28 > 0:03:30as I see you again tomorrow.
