0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hello. At this time of the year we're starting to see

0:00:06 > 0:00:08light at the end of the tunnel from those winter months.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11But this week we're also likely to see all faces of winter.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14It wasn't a bad start, really, with a frost, as you can see

0:00:14 > 0:00:17from these Weather Watchers pictures sent in from Somerset.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21Clear blue skies and sunshine, though, in parts of Gloucestershire,

0:00:21 > 0:00:24but there were some frequent showers running down the North Sea coast

0:00:24 > 0:00:27and they actually brought a wintry mix,

0:00:27 > 0:00:29a light dusting of snow in Sunderland.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Thanks for the Weather Watchers photos that we've been sent in.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Now for Tuesday, after a frosty start, some sparkling sunshine

0:00:35 > 0:00:37across much of England and Wales.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40A different story further north and west

0:00:40 > 0:00:43with the wind strengthening, cloud and rain gathering here,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46some snow across the mountains, and we're likely to see gales

0:00:46 > 0:00:48and some pretty persistent rain for a time.

0:00:48 > 0:00:49Highs of 5 to 8 degrees.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53Now, that weather front could produce a bit of a headache

0:00:53 > 0:00:56as it continues to slowly drift its way south and east,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58bumping into the cold air ahead of it,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01but also there's some cold air behind,

0:01:01 > 0:01:04and that mix may well mean that we could see some snow,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06chiefly to the higher ground - across the Southern Uplands,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08through the Pennines and into North Wales.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11But maybe for a time at lower levels as well -

0:01:11 > 0:01:13certainly one to keep an eye on.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15But underneath that cloud, rain or snow,

0:01:15 > 0:01:17it's going to be a pretty miserable feel to the day.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19To the south-east, somewhat drier and brighter,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21same too to the north and west.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24That weather front clears away first thing on Thursday morning,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27brighter conditions following on behind -

0:01:27 > 0:01:30not a bad day in prospect, largely fine and dry,

0:01:30 > 0:01:34but again on the colder side, 5 to 7 or 8 degrees the high.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36As we move out of Thursday into Friday

0:01:36 > 0:01:38we start to see a change developing -

0:01:38 > 0:01:41not a bad start to the day after some early frost,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45some sunshine coming through, cloud and rain gathering out to the west.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47But the wind starting to swing round

0:01:47 > 0:01:49to more of a west or a south-westerly direction,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51introducing milder air,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54and that's going to bring some air across Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58and west-facing coasts, eventually pushing its way south and east.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02But milder - temperatures sitting at about 10 degrees in the south-east.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05So that means a change as we move into the weekend.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Another weather front follows on behind.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Westerly winds take over.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Pretty windy day, perhaps, for the start of the weekend,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14and some outbreaks of rain to come.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17It starts off dry in eastern areas, rain pushing in from the west

0:02:17 > 0:02:20somewhat erratically from west to east,

0:02:20 > 0:02:21but a milder feel to the day.

0:02:21 > 0:02:26Temperatures around 11 or 13 degrees across much of England and Wales.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30But to look further ahead, we have to look further afield,

0:02:30 > 0:02:31and if you haven't already heard,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34it's been bitterly cold across eastern parts of the US.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Signs of milder air starting to push in,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40and this milder air is going to reignite the jet stream,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43re-intensify the jet stream as it pushes out of the US

0:02:43 > 0:02:45across the Atlantic.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47So we'll start to see a fast-moving jet

0:02:47 > 0:02:49channelling its way across the Atlantic,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52driving towards the UK.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Centring perhaps towards the north, and that means we will see

0:02:55 > 0:02:58more unsettled weather across the far north.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01But more importantly, it's going to continue to introduce

0:03:01 > 0:03:03milder air across the country,

0:03:03 > 0:03:07with occasional dips in that see-saw variation that we've seen recently

0:03:07 > 0:03:10with colder air from time to time.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13But basically, it means that the winds will be a key feature

0:03:13 > 0:03:15as we move towards the end of February.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18And there's going to be some rain, some of it heavy at times.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21We're back to the see-saw, dipping temperatures,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25no two days the same. One day mild, the next day cold.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28So it looks pretty unsettled as we move towards the end of February.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30More from me tomorrow.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47A world full of your favourite Dickens characters.

0:03:51 > 0:03:51Why do you stay with him, Helen?

0:03:51 > 0:03:52If that was my daughter,

0:03:52 > 0:03:53You know, you're quite funny, for a girl.

0:03:53 > 0:03:54One decision...
