0:00:03 > 0:00:07Hello. Meteorologically, the end of February is the end of the winter,

0:00:07 > 0:00:09but before we get there we're likely to see

0:00:09 > 0:00:13all faces of winter, and for Tuesday it was a face of contrasting

0:00:13 > 0:00:17conditions with some windy and wet weather out to the north and west.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19After a frosty start,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22we had some beautiful sunshine across much of England and Wales.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25And the Weather Watchers' pictures reflected this beautifully, a

0:00:25 > 0:00:29lovely scene in Kent but a different story further north and west.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Yes, it was a dramatic scene, but unfortunately, there was

0:00:32 > 0:00:36some heavy rain and some big waves in South Lanarkshire.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Now, that wet and windy weather is continuing to push its way

0:00:39 > 0:00:41steadily south and east through Wednesday.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43There'll be some snow to higher ground,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46but as we go through Wednesday evening,

0:00:46 > 0:00:49it does look as though that rain could turn more to a wintry

0:00:49 > 0:00:53mix of sleet and snow even at lower levels through the Midlands

0:00:53 > 0:00:55and eastern England. It will clear away pretty readily.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58And then on Thursday we see a return to some colder, drier,

0:00:58 > 0:01:02sunnier conditions with a scattering of showers out to the north

0:01:02 > 0:01:06and west and highs of around three to seven Celsius.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Now, as we move out of Thursday into Friday,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11we start off in sheltered eastern areas dry with some sunshine,

0:01:11 > 0:01:12clouding over,

0:01:12 > 0:01:16and the winds starting to strengthen ahead of this next area of rain.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19Now, the wind's starting to push in from a south-westerly

0:01:19 > 0:01:21so starting to introduce slightly milder air,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24double figures returning into the south-west.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27And this is the indication as we move into the weekend

0:01:27 > 0:01:30as further wet and windy weather pushes in from the west.

0:01:30 > 0:01:31With that system clearing away,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33the winds swing round to more of a westerly.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35It brings some rain,

0:01:35 > 0:01:37some of it heavy, and we'll need to keep a close

0:01:37 > 0:01:40eye on rainfall total amounts up into the extreme north-west.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42But it's introducing this milder air.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46So a real difference with the feel of the weather on Saturday.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Yes, it's going to be pretty windy and often wet at times,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51particularly further north and west, but look

0:01:51 > 0:01:55at the temperatures, highs of 13 degrees not out of the question.

0:01:55 > 0:01:56Still some pretty wet

0:01:56 > 0:01:59and windy weather to come into the second half of the weekend, but as

0:01:59 > 0:02:02that frontal system starts to clear through,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05the winds will slowly start to swing round to more of a north-westerly

0:02:05 > 0:02:07and eventually, through the second half of the weekend,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10introduce some slightly colder air to the north.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13So we'll start to see blues returning across the northern

0:02:13 > 0:02:14half of the country,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17still the milder yellows down to the south, which basically means

0:02:17 > 0:02:21that those temperatures will still stay at around 11 to 13 degrees.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Still the potential for some heavy spells of rain,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27as well, through the course of Sunday.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Once we've got Sunday out of the way, we start to see a change.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33It's all due to the jet stream. Through the weekend,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36a jet is centred through the spine of the country, driving low

0:02:36 > 0:02:40pressures across us and dragging in this milder south-westerly flow.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43But then we've just started to see things will change. Into the early

0:02:43 > 0:02:46half of next week, the low pressure kinks

0:02:46 > 0:02:49and we start to see this high building out to the south-west.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51That's going to introduce colder air from a northerly

0:02:51 > 0:02:55direction again, but it's not expected to last.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Towards the end of the six-to-ten-day period,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00the jet stream centres itself almost in a parallel

0:03:00 > 0:03:03position across the UK, driving those low pressures in.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06And what does this basically all mean for us?

0:03:06 > 0:03:10Well, it means that we haven't lost the return to that cold weather,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13potentially hard night-time frosts into the early part of next

0:03:13 > 0:03:16week but some beautiful spells of sunshine.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18But it will quickly disappear.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21In the longer ten-day period, we could see a return to some

0:03:21 > 0:03:24milder but wetter and windier weather to come.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27I'll firm up on those details same time, same place tomorrow.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Until then, keep sending in your Weather Watchers' photos.
