0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello. Thanks for tuning in.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08Quite a bit happening on the weather front over the next few days

0:00:08 > 0:00:10and also a fair bit of uncertainty for the start of next week.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13In the short term, we're fairly confident

0:00:13 > 0:00:15this weekend is just going to be pretty cloudy for most of us,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19quite windy, too, and there's some rain in the forecast as well.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Now, this is the big view across the Atlantic.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25There's a big ribbon of cloud stretching across the ocean here

0:00:25 > 0:00:28and for us it means a pretty overcast weekend

0:00:28 > 0:00:30with bits and pieces of rain.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32Now, there's a weather front draped across the Atlantic,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34looks a bit like bunting stretching from the UK

0:00:34 > 0:00:38right across the North Atlantic to just south of Newfoundland here.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40And this weather front separates two air masses.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42We've got the colder air mass to the north,

0:00:42 > 0:00:45coming all the way from Iceland and Greenland,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48and we've got the slightly milder air - quite a bit milder, in fact -

0:00:48 > 0:00:50coming all the way from the Azores.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52And the UK is going to be on that border

0:00:52 > 0:00:56between the cold and the mild air, and it means what it means.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59So that means that across Scotland and Northern England

0:00:59 > 0:01:01we'll have chilly conditions, there'll be some snow showers,

0:01:01 > 0:01:04whereas in the south, significantly milder,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06and on top of that you can see a lot of cloud

0:01:06 > 0:01:09and bits and pieces of rain. Most of this rain

0:01:09 > 0:01:12is actually going to be relatively light and fleeting in the wind.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16The rain will be particularly heavy I think across the hills of Wales

0:01:16 > 0:01:18and perhaps the north-west of England,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21so this area here actually, through the course of Saturday and Sunday,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23could even get a bit of local flooding.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25The rain won't be heavy all the time,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27it'll just keep falling in the same place,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30because this weather pattern actually isn't shifting much.

0:01:30 > 0:01:31It keeps coming in from the west,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33and if you remember that imaginary line here -

0:01:33 > 0:01:36the cold to the north, the mild to the south -

0:01:36 > 0:01:38and here's that weather front here.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42So that rain keeps falling on the same place over and over again,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44hence there's that chance of a bit of flooding.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47To the south it's cloudy and drizzly, 14 degrees,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50maybe a bit of brightness, if we're lucky. To the north,

0:01:50 > 0:01:52we keep that colder air, with around 5 or 6 degrees.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Now, early next week, the winds are going to shift in direction

0:01:56 > 0:01:59and we'll get a shot of colder air coming in from the north.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Colder and drier air. So what does that mean?

0:02:01 > 0:02:04For most of us, it means that we'll certainly feel the chill,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07particularly on the North Sea coast with those cold northerly winds,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10and cold enough for some wintry showers,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12particularly across the Scottish hills

0:02:12 > 0:02:13but also as far south as the Pennines.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16So here's Monday. The temperatures may not look particularly low,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19but because it's dry air, quite a strong wind,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22it is going to feel cold. Now, here comes the uncertainty.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25By the time we get to Tuesday,

0:02:25 > 0:02:28we're looking at an area of low pressure approaching the UK,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31and this is going to be a player for midweek weather.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Now, it looks like the area of low pressure

0:02:33 > 0:02:36is going to go to the south. When it goes to the south,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39we'll get weather that we'll have a look at in just a second.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43But if it goes to the north, we'll get different weather altogether.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Let's have a look at this more likely track,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48so the low decides to go towards the south.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51What that means is it opens up colder air from the north,

0:02:51 > 0:02:55and there is a chance of some snow across parts of the Midlands.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59Now, if this low were to go a little bit further north,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02we probably won't see any snow, it'll be milder.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04But this is the more likely scenario.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06And then once that low pressure's out of the way,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09it does look as though eventually that milder air

0:03:09 > 0:03:11is going to once again win and come in off the Atlantic.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13So we're going to go a little bit up and down the hill

0:03:13 > 0:03:15for the start of next week.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Let's summarise all that, cos a lot's happening.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Here's Monday's weather - pretty chilly, maybe some snow showers.

0:03:20 > 0:03:21Then that risk of snow midweek

0:03:21 > 0:03:24depending on where that area of low pressure goes,

0:03:24 > 0:03:27and then by Friday, it does look as though things are going to turn,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30once again, a little bit milder. Thanks for watching.
