0:00:03 > 0:00:05Yesterday I mentioned what a fascinating week we have

0:00:05 > 0:00:08ahead of us as the weather goes from one distinct mode to another.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11It felt like early spring across some parts of the UK through

0:00:11 > 0:00:22this weekend with some sunshine and temperatures

0:00:22 > 0:00:24I know we are approaching March,

0:00:24 > 0:00:28but some of the coldest air over the winter so far through this week.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31There will be some sunshine - that's good news -

0:00:31 > 0:00:33but there will be some widespread frosts at night

0:00:33 > 0:00:35and a few wintry showers thrown in for good measure.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38In fact, we start Monday with some wintry showers across the

0:00:38 > 0:00:41heart of Scotland, staying mostly up over the high ground.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44A wet, dismal start to the day across southern counties

0:00:44 > 0:00:46and that rain lingering on and off for much of the day,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48particularly down towards the south coast.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51The brightest of the weather will be further north but it will be

0:00:51 > 0:00:53chilly and those temperatures really knocked on the head

0:00:53 > 0:00:56across the more central and southern areas compared with the weekend.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Six or seven degrees will be typical.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01As we go through Monday night into Tuesday morning, that weather front

0:01:01 > 0:01:04is still lurking with intent across southern coastal areas,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07so further rain, maybe a bit of sleet up over the high ground.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09A band of wintry showers pushing down across the north

0:01:09 > 0:01:13of Scotland, but actually in between a lot of sunshine,

0:01:13 > 0:01:17bright and crisp and sunny for the most part but feeling chilly, yes.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Five, six, seven degrees again will be typical.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23That rain finally clearing away from the south coast.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25On into Wednesday, another little band of wintry showers is

0:01:25 > 0:01:28pushing down across the country. There could be some snowfall

0:01:28 > 0:01:31over the high ground but it shouldn't amount to a great deal.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33The vast majority of us will stay dry with plenty of sunshine,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35but that nagging northerly breeze will knock

0:01:35 > 0:01:37the temperatures on the head for sure.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39What you will notice through the middle part of this week is

0:01:39 > 0:01:41some very cold nights.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44The blues take over, indicating some particularly sharp frosts

0:01:44 > 0:01:48through the middle part of this week with clear skies and light winds.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50In fact, across the snowfields of Scotland

0:01:50 > 0:01:53we could get as low as -10 degrees.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55And then we start to look to the west,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57with this weather front pushing in off the Atlantic.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59It's not there yet and for most of us

0:01:59 > 0:02:02on Thursday it will be another largely dry day.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Still, a brisk wind across eastern coastal areas

0:02:04 > 0:02:06could carry one or two wintry showers,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09but once more many of us will have fine weather.

0:02:09 > 0:02:09If you wear a few layers

0:02:09 > 0:02:12and get out of that breeze it shouldn't feel too bad.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14There's no doubt about it, it will be chilly, particularly

0:02:14 > 0:02:16when those wintry showers come along.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20By Friday, those fronts trying to push in from the west

0:02:20 > 0:02:22but slow progress and many places

0:02:22 > 0:02:25probably again ending the week on a dry note.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Will be a chilly one after a frosty start.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32You would expect these fronts usually to continue to come

0:02:32 > 0:02:36in from the west but that's not the case on this occasion.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38And the reason for that is the jet stream.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43Just watch how it takes a huge diversion northwards towards

0:02:43 > 0:02:47Greenland, and that means downstream it dips southwards and takes

0:02:47 > 0:02:51that area of low pressure and fronts down towards France and Spain.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54This is where we think it will be next weekend.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Now, there is a small chance that this low pressure could be

0:02:57 > 0:03:00closer towards us and as it bumps into the cold air

0:03:00 > 0:03:03that would give some significant snowfall, but at this stage

0:03:03 > 0:03:07we think next weekend that low will be to the south of us

0:03:07 > 0:03:11and what we will have is a run of brisk easterly winds,

0:03:11 > 0:03:14and really chilly winds as well with that cold air in place.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17And that theme, we think, continues into March.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20There are developments elsewhere in the atmosphere which indicate

0:03:20 > 0:03:23that this cold spell could last some significant time

0:03:23 > 0:03:26with the hard frosts at night and the risk of some snowfall.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29We will keep you posted and update you again tomorrow.
