0:00:03 > 0:00:04There's a bit of a complication

0:00:04 > 0:00:06towards the end of this week and into the weekend,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08but the main themes for the rest of February

0:00:08 > 0:00:10and into the first part of March are cold.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12In fact, it could potentially be

0:00:12 > 0:00:14the longest spell of cold weather for quite some time.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17Quite a bit of sunshine by day, widespread night-time frost

0:00:17 > 0:00:19and, yes, some wintry showers.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Certainly snow showers across northern Scotland during Tuesday.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24A bit of snow in the showers over the hills

0:00:24 > 0:00:25across north-east England.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Mostly rain showers at lower levels through the day here.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30A bit of cloud across parts of the south,

0:00:30 > 0:00:33but overall, a much brighter day here compared to Monday,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35and with some sunshine, we could get to 9 Celsius.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37More typically 5 to 7 degrees,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39feeling colder with a bit of wind across northern Scotland

0:00:39 > 0:00:41that continues to blow

0:00:41 > 0:00:44and continues to bring snow showers here on Tuesday evening.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46So, potentially, it could be icy.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Look at the map changing colour. It's going blue widely.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Hard frost likely during Tuesday night and Wednesday morning,

0:00:52 > 0:00:54temperatures widely below freezing.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Maybe as low as -10

0:00:56 > 0:00:59where there's snow on the ground across northern Scotland.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00And we'll keep snow showers here.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02There'll be some wintriness,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04some sleet and snow mixed in to the showers,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07over north-west England, North Wales and Northern Ireland during the day.

0:01:07 > 0:01:08But the showers will be scattered

0:01:08 > 0:01:10and for many, it's another dry, bright day,

0:01:10 > 0:01:14and after we start with that frost, we're up to 4 to 7 or 8 degrees.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Still a lot colder in northern Scotland.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Frosty start again on Thursday. It's a similar day -

0:01:18 > 0:01:21dry and bright for many, sunny spells, a few showers.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23And then the complication that I talked about earlier.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26This band of blue, a band of rain, a weather front,

0:01:26 > 0:01:27trying to push in.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30There's always uncertainty after a cold spell

0:01:30 > 0:01:33about when these weather fronts will push away the cold air.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36And it's all to do with this area of low pressure,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39where and by how much will that intensify.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41With the cold air in place,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43there is the likelihood of some snow as the wet weather arrives.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46At the moment, Wales potentially seeing a little bit

0:01:46 > 0:01:48during the course of Friday.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50But we need to firm up on the details

0:01:50 > 0:01:53because of the complications to do with that low pressure.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56It is still with us as we go into the weekend.

0:01:56 > 0:01:57Why the uncertainty?

0:01:57 > 0:02:01Well, again, we have to look high up in the atmosphere at the jet stream.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04We are used to the jet stream driving across the Atlantic

0:02:04 > 0:02:06and across the UK from west to east.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10But as we go into the weekend, it's in a slightly strange position.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14The jet stream is driving south to the west of the UK.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17That means it could pick up that low pressure over Ireland,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19or it could develop it across the Bay of Biscay.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21It's actually all tied in

0:02:21 > 0:02:22with what's going on in the United States,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25which is actually causing a bit of a ripple, if you like,

0:02:25 > 0:02:28in the rope that is the jet stream, pushing it north

0:02:28 > 0:02:33and then driving it southwards with some intensity, some vigour.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36So, I say, uncertainty about where that low pressure develops,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39but we end up through the weekend, into the earlier part of next week,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42with low pressure sitting over Spain and Portugal.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Could be quite a wet weekend here.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47For us, we're on the northern side of this area of low pressure,

0:02:47 > 0:02:50which means the winds start coming in from the east,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53something we have not seen much of so far this winter.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Easterly winds are never warm.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Cold winds look like dominating through the weekend

0:02:59 > 0:03:01and into the earlier part of next week.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Generally quite dry when the wind's coming from the north-east,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06but they always pick up some moisture over the North Sea,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09which means eastern areas will be favoured

0:03:09 > 0:03:12for seeing the showers from those winds.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14Some sleet and snow potentially mixed in.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17So, definitely as we head into March, it'll feel like winter,

0:03:17 > 0:03:22with the cold winds, hard frost and some wintry showers,

0:03:22 > 0:03:24particularly in the east.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27As always, we'll be firming up on the details over the next few days.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28Goodbye.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43MUSIC: Low Rider by War

0:03:43 > 0:03:47So here we are at the starting line of this year's Sport Relief games.
