0:00:03 > 0:00:05It's a bit unusual, the weather situation at the moment

0:00:05 > 0:00:08in that we're pretty sure we know what's going to happen

0:00:08 > 0:00:10for the next couple of days and for the start of next week.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13It's what happens in between, particularly so on Friday,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15that there's some uncertainty.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18More on that in a moment, though, because the sure thing at the moment

0:00:18 > 0:00:22is that most having frosty mornings followed by sunny skies by day.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24There are a few showers around on Wednesday

0:00:24 > 0:00:26across northern Scotland and in Northern Ireland,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29but for most, it'll be dry and bright with some winter sunshine.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33And after we start below freezing, well below in some places,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35we're up to 4 to 8 Celsius for most come the afternoon.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Colder across northern Scotland,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40and feeling significantly colder because of that brisk wind

0:00:40 > 0:00:42which continues to bring snow showers

0:00:42 > 0:00:44across northern Scotland on Wednesday evening.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Potentially, it could be icy here.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49A bit more cloud drifting southwards overnight across England and Wales,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52but for most, it's clear and, again, it's going to be cold.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54A widespread hard frost for Thursday morning.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Some mist and fog - that should clear away.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59Again, through the day, a sprinkling of showers,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01chiefly in northern Scotland.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03For most, it's another dry, sunny day.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05And, again, after we start below freezing,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08we're up to 4 to 6 or 7 come the afternoon.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Feeling quite pleasant, actually, in the sunshine, out of the wind.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Friday is again, by and large, a dry, bright day

0:01:14 > 0:01:16with a cold, cold start.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18But there are complications in the west.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Lots more cloud here, and the risk of some wet weather,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22particularly across the south-west.

0:01:22 > 0:01:23It is just a risk at the moment,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25because there's a lot of uncertainty

0:01:25 > 0:01:29about which of these two areas of low pressure develops.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31If it's the one to the south-west, as I say,

0:01:31 > 0:01:32potentially some heavy rain here.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36The reason why there's uncertainty about these areas of low pressure

0:01:36 > 0:01:40is actually tied in to this area of low pressure in North America,

0:01:40 > 0:01:41which is intensifying at the moment.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44It's quite a beast, this, bringing some heavy snow

0:01:44 > 0:01:47and strong winds across the north-east of Canada in particular.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51But for us, the crucial thing is as that low drives northwards,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54it really takes some warm air northwards

0:01:54 > 0:01:56through the mid-Atlantic, up towards Greenland.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59And it's the boundary between the warm and cold air

0:01:59 > 0:02:00that drives the jet stream.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Instead of the jet stream driving straight across the Atlantic,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06it's going north with that warm air,

0:02:06 > 0:02:10before, like a rollercoaster, it drives southwards rapidly

0:02:10 > 0:02:11to the west of the UK,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14picking up those areas of low pressure, possibly,

0:02:14 > 0:02:15and intensifying them.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Uncertainty, then, about Friday, but we are pretty confident

0:02:18 > 0:02:21that by Saturday, as the jet stream drives southwards,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23where we've got this kink,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25the low-pressure system will be sitting in here,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27bringing, potentially, quite a wet weekend

0:02:27 > 0:02:30to parts of southern France and Spain.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34For us, with a low drifting to the south, lots of isobars on the chart.

0:02:34 > 0:02:35It's going to be a windy day,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38and that wind will be coming in from the east,

0:02:38 > 0:02:41feeling bitter, certainly across England and Wales.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43For Scotland and Northern Ireland, the winds are lighter,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45so here it's a similar sort of day on Saturday.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Again, many places dry, some showers in the east.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49But for England and Wales,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52these are the sort of temperatures we're seeing for the next few days,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56but add on the wind, it will feel a lot colder this weekend.

0:02:56 > 0:02:57Into the early part of next week

0:02:57 > 0:03:00and low pressure continues to meander across central Europe.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02High pressure building in across the UK,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04so a dry start to the working week next week.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Notice this bit of blue. It's a weather front

0:03:06 > 0:03:09which will try and topple in against the higher pressure

0:03:09 > 0:03:11and could introduce a bit of rain.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Uncertainty about that, but the overall feeling

0:03:13 > 0:03:17is that higher pressure will then move back to the UK.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19So, for next week, it's staying on the cold side.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21A sunny start. Frosty start, too.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23A brief bit of wet weather around

0:03:23 > 0:03:25before things probably turn drier again

0:03:25 > 0:03:27around the middle part of the week.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Lots going on. We'll, as always, keep you updated.
