0:00:02 > 0:00:04Good evening. It's time to bring you up to date with what

0:00:04 > 0:00:07we think is going to happen throughout next week.

0:00:07 > 0:00:09If you were watching Alex yesterday evening little has

0:00:09 > 0:00:11changed but let's put a bit more detail on it.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14First of all we've had this cold weather for much of the week

0:00:14 > 0:00:16and that's going to continue for the next few days.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18We've had some lovely shots from our Weather Watchers through today.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21That mist in Cambria, the sunshine

0:00:21 > 0:00:23in Hampshire through this afternoon.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25The cloud did tend to bubble up a little bit

0:00:25 > 0:00:29more into the afternoon but it will fade a little bit through the night.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30Another chilly start, Friday.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Not as cold or as hard a frost as we've been used to

0:00:33 > 0:00:35because we've got more cloud coming in.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36A little bit of freezing fog

0:00:36 > 0:00:39and still the risk of some icy patches first thing

0:00:39 > 0:00:42because we've got a few showers falling onto frozen surfaces.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45But this area of low pressure will bring more cloud to the

0:00:45 > 0:00:48far south-west of England, western Wales and across Northern Ireland.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Actually giving Northern Ireland quite a few more showers

0:00:50 > 0:00:53compared with what we've had during the day on Thursday.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55But still pleasant enough in eastern areas despite only five or

0:00:55 > 0:00:59six degrees Celsius. It's the light wind regime.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02That low pressure bringing those showers through the day on Friday is

0:01:02 > 0:01:04likely to pull away this weekend

0:01:04 > 0:01:06joining forces with a fairly aggressive area of low

0:01:06 > 0:01:10pressure across Iberia and southern parts of France and into the Alps.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12It looks as if it could be quite destructive, that area of low

0:01:12 > 0:01:15pressure, whilst across our shores the high-pressure will hold on.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18The difference is we pick up that easterly wind. A little bit of

0:01:18 > 0:01:21weather lore for you says that an easterly wind is no good to

0:01:21 > 0:01:24man or beast, and it will feel much colder across the southern

0:01:24 > 0:01:27half of the country despite some good spells of sunshine.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Further north lighter winds, but will feel more pleasant.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32It's that wind-chill factor if you like coming into play this weekend.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36Still a few wintry showers around, a little bit of early-morning frost

0:01:36 > 0:01:38certainly, and fog, but that easterly wind

0:01:38 > 0:01:41will really make it feel much colder again for the bulk of England

0:01:41 > 0:01:43and Wales, particularly near the east coast.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45And look what's starting to head in from the Atlantic

0:01:45 > 0:01:48later in the day, much later in the day, into the new week actually.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50So for the weekend, just to sum up,

0:01:50 > 0:01:52it does look set to stay mainly dry.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54Very useful weather if you want to get out and about.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Yes, it will feel cold, especially in the south,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58because of the wind, which tends to ease on Monday.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02A pretty raw start to the day with a sharp frost, Monday morning.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05But come the end of Monday we've got our next set of weather

0:02:05 > 0:02:08fronts moving in, initially turning to snow and it's the start

0:02:08 > 0:02:10of the change. Early next week we

0:02:10 > 0:02:13change our type. We go from that high-pressure

0:02:13 > 0:02:17back to low-pressure rolling in off the Atlantic.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19For the start of the week, as you saw, it's going to be very cold,

0:02:19 > 0:02:23but eventually by the end of Monday we turn in to the milder regime.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25It's because of the jet stream as Alex explained last night.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27We've had this blocking system set up

0:02:27 > 0:02:29and that strong northerly jet.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33It starts to weaken a little bit later on Sunday and then something

0:02:33 > 0:02:36more usual starts to pull its way in off the Atlantic.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39The jet stream often comes in off the Atlantic,

0:02:39 > 0:02:40a westerly direction

0:02:40 > 0:02:43pulling areas of low pressure in. And it weakens at times.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46That's when we'll see ridges of high pressure, and at times

0:02:46 > 0:02:47we'll see a plunge of north-westerly winds

0:02:47 > 0:02:49so it will get colder as well.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51We'll have some colder snaps during the week ahead

0:02:51 > 0:02:54but also some windier, wetter snaps.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56As you can see, towards the latter part of next week as well

0:02:56 > 0:02:58that next area of low pressure comes in.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Some tightly packed isobars, so some windy weather potentially

0:03:02 > 0:03:05and then behind that again another cold snap of weather.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08So it looks as if it will be more changeable,

0:03:08 > 0:03:09the weather, as we move into the new week,

0:03:09 > 0:03:12from the end of Monday onwards when we'll start to see systems,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15low pressures moving in, bringing the wind and the rain.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Generally windier anyway because we haven't the high-pressure

0:03:18 > 0:03:21and there will be some cold snaps of course in between those

0:03:21 > 0:03:23spells of wet and windier weather.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26But more business as usual as we approach the start of March.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29They do say, "In like a lion, out like a lamb." So stay tuned.
