0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello there. Now, of course, it's a leap year this year,
0:00:05 > 0:00:08so we get one extra day of winter, but meteorological spring
0:00:08 > 0:00:10just around the corner, starts on 1st March. Well, looking back
0:00:10 > 0:00:13at the winter, it will go down as a warm one and a wet one
0:00:13 > 0:00:15and there's more on those statistics
0:00:15 > 0:00:16online on the BBC Weather website.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18A cold start to the day on Monday
0:00:18 > 0:00:19across England and Wales
0:00:19 > 0:00:21in particular. Minus four, minus five
0:00:21 > 0:00:22in some rural spots.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24No problems with the frost in the west
0:00:24 > 0:00:25because here we've got more
0:00:25 > 0:00:26of a breeze from the south,
0:00:26 > 0:00:28some cloud and mostly light and patchy rain
0:00:28 > 0:00:29which will slowly drift
0:00:29 > 0:00:30its way across the Irish Sea.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Patchy rain gets into the western side of Wales
0:00:32 > 0:00:34and the far south-west of England
0:00:34 > 0:00:35by the middle of the afternoon.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Much of Wales and the eastern side of England
0:00:37 > 0:00:39doing well with some hazy sunshine,
0:00:39 > 0:00:41eight or nine degrees, the top temperatures.
0:00:41 > 0:00:42It's really through Monday evening
0:00:42 > 0:00:44when that rain starts to push its way
0:00:44 > 0:00:45across most of the UK.
0:00:45 > 0:00:46The winds will be picking up,
0:00:46 > 0:00:48lots of isobars on the charts.
0:00:48 > 0:00:49It will be quite wet, quite windy
0:00:49 > 0:00:51to start the day on Tuesday.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53That rain makes steady progress ever eastwards
0:00:53 > 0:00:55with not a very pleasant start
0:00:55 > 0:00:56to the day on Tuesday
0:00:56 > 0:00:59with wind and rain across much of the UK.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01It'll last longest across
0:01:01 > 0:01:02more eastern parts of England,
0:01:02 > 0:01:03but behind it there is something
0:01:03 > 0:01:05a bit drier following on behind,
0:01:05 > 0:01:06but also quite a few showers.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Some of us may see double-figure temperatures
0:01:09 > 0:01:11on Tuesday, but, of course, you have
0:01:11 > 0:01:13to factor in that wind which will be quite keen.
0:01:13 > 0:01:14It stays pretty windy
0:01:14 > 0:01:16and very unsettled
0:01:16 > 0:01:17into the middle part of the week.
0:01:17 > 0:01:19The low pressure to the north of the UK
0:01:19 > 0:01:20dragging in the air from the long way north.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23There's some cold air coming down through the UK
0:01:23 > 0:01:24and this little feature looks like it
0:01:24 > 0:01:26could bring some pretty blustery winds with it.
0:01:26 > 0:01:27It's a very windy day.
0:01:27 > 0:01:29You could see some gales round the coasts,
0:01:29 > 0:01:31to the north, the west and in the south.
0:01:31 > 0:01:32And it's quite an unsettled day,
0:01:32 > 0:01:34lots of showers around,
0:01:34 > 0:01:35some of those will be heavy, thundery,
0:01:35 > 0:01:37a real mixture of rain, hail, sleet,
0:01:37 > 0:01:38a little bit of snow
0:01:38 > 0:01:40over the hills of northern England.
0:01:40 > 0:01:41In fact, across northern parts of the UK,
0:01:41 > 0:01:43some of that snow might
0:01:43 > 0:01:44get down to the lower levels.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46On into Thursday, and we've got low pressure
0:01:46 > 0:01:49to west of the UK and out towards the east.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51In between, we've still got this cold air
0:01:51 > 0:01:53coming down from the north.
0:01:53 > 0:01:54That bit drier, I suspect,
0:01:54 > 0:01:55for many places on Thursday,
0:01:55 > 0:01:57particularly along the south coast,
0:01:57 > 0:01:58but not completely dry
0:01:58 > 0:02:00cos there will be a few showers
0:02:00 > 0:02:01towards the North Sea coast,
0:02:01 > 0:02:02northern Scotland and later on
0:02:02 > 0:02:03we start to see some rain just
0:02:03 > 0:02:06nudging its way into the far south and west.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08That is due to an area of low pressure
0:02:08 > 0:02:09which is driven along
0:02:09 > 0:02:12by the jet stream. So let's take a look at the jet stream later on
0:02:12 > 0:02:15this coming week and it will be a key feature of things
0:02:15 > 0:02:18because it looks like it'll be pushing its way on long way north
0:02:18 > 0:02:20up towards Greenland but then arcing quite a long way south
0:02:20 > 0:02:23and as it does so, it continues to pull in cold air.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25And we are also going to see low-pressure systems
0:02:25 > 0:02:28developing in this trough which develops towards the start
0:02:28 > 0:02:32of the coming weekend, so into next weekend and it looks
0:02:32 > 0:02:35like we're going to stay pretty unsettled with low pressure
0:02:35 > 0:02:36pretty much on top of the UK.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38This is at least for the first part of the coming weekend.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41The isobars, you can trace them back to a long way north,
0:02:41 > 0:02:44so, again, cold air filtering down across the United Kingdom.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46So quite an unsettled look to things,
0:02:46 > 0:02:48further heavy showers in the forecast
0:02:48 > 0:02:50for the start of the weekend. The second part of the weekend,
0:02:50 > 0:02:53things might just begin to settle down from the west
0:02:53 > 0:02:57as this area of high pressure drifts its way in from the Atlantic.
0:02:57 > 0:02:59So we've still got low-pressure to the east of the UK
0:02:59 > 0:03:02and in between the two, well, the resultant winds are coming down
0:03:02 > 0:03:06from the north, so yet more cold air filtering down across the UK.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09Not quite done with that wintry feel to things.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11So into next weekend and beyond,
0:03:11 > 0:03:13it looks as if we're going to stay quite cold,
0:03:13 > 0:03:16daytime temperatures will be struggling a little bit,
0:03:16 > 0:03:18still some night-time frost
0:03:18 > 0:03:19and it looks quite unsettled
0:03:19 > 0:03:21with further wintry showers to be
0:03:21 > 0:03:23had on into the following week
0:03:23 > 0:03:24but at least there will
0:03:24 > 0:03:26be some spells of sunshine.
0:03:26 > 0:03:27There's a lot going on
0:03:27 > 0:03:28in the next few days -
0:03:28 > 0:03:30you can keep up-to-date with all of it online.
