0:00:02 > 0:00:04After a fairly wintry-feeling week,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06we are stepping into the second week of spring,

0:00:06 > 0:00:07meteorologically speaking,

0:00:07 > 0:00:09and things will start to feel a bit more spring-like eventually.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Certainly it is a cold start to this week.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14Quite a wintry feel to things still over the next day or so

0:00:14 > 0:00:17and then we're looking at a spell of pretty wet and windy weather

0:00:17 > 0:00:19through the middle part of the week

0:00:19 > 0:00:22before eventually some milder and more settled weather on the cards.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25But before we get there, back to the here and now.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27A cold start to Tuesday with some iciness in the north,

0:00:27 > 0:00:29a hard frost first thing.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31This band of cloud crosses the country bringing with it some

0:00:31 > 0:00:35splashes of light rain, a little bit of sleet and hill snow around too.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38But that frontal system fizzles out as it heads towards

0:00:38 > 0:00:40the south-east during the afternoon.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Staying pretty cold, just 6 to 8 degrees

0:00:42 > 0:00:45with further wintry showers packing into the north-west.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47And then the weather gets a bit more complicated through

0:00:47 > 0:00:50the middle part of the week, down to this developing area of

0:00:50 > 0:00:53low pressure, you can see fairly tight isobars around that system.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55So we are looking at a spell of wet

0:00:55 > 0:00:57and windy weather as we head through Tuesday night and on into Wednesday.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01But some uncertainty about the exact timing and positioning of the rain.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03It looks like some southern and eastern parts of England,

0:01:03 > 0:01:07in particular, we'll see some heavy rain and some significant snow,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09even to some lower levels perhaps

0:01:09 > 0:01:12on the northern and western edge of this low-pressure system.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Not just the wet weather and snow, but also some strong winds.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17It's likely that the strongest of the winds will be

0:01:17 > 0:01:19across the south-west of England and Wales.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Severe gales possible here.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Further north and west, we're looking at less windy conditions

0:01:24 > 0:01:25and a bit more in the way of sunshine

0:01:25 > 0:01:27for Northern Ireland and for Scotland.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30But certainly, for much of England and Wales, a spell of windy

0:01:30 > 0:01:32and wet weather through the day on Wednesday.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35But things quieten down as we look through Wednesday night

0:01:35 > 0:01:37into Thursday and that's all down to the fact that we've got

0:01:37 > 0:01:40this ridge of higher pressure building in from the Atlantic.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42So that frontal system, that low pressure,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44squeezing away towards the east.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46A warm front heading in, so that's importing with it

0:01:46 > 0:01:49some milder air as we look towards the end of this week.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51On Thursday, we are likely to see

0:01:51 > 0:01:52some further wet and windy conditions

0:01:52 > 0:01:55across parts of Northern Ireland, perhaps into the west of Scotland.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58But for much of the UK, a fairly cloudy, quieter sort of day.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Still a little bit chilly in the east,

0:02:00 > 0:02:04but temperatures further west back into double figures once again.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07So we're going to be eventually waving goodbye to the blue colours,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10the colder air mass and we're seeing the milder weather

0:02:10 > 0:02:14moving in from the Atlantic from a south-westerly direction.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16That means for Friday then, a fairly cloudy story.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18We could still see a front fizzling out

0:02:18 > 0:02:19mainly across much of the country.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22But perhaps some wet and windy weather towards the north-west.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Dryer, brighter conditions likely in the south-east and we could

0:02:25 > 0:02:29see temperatures of 12, perhaps 13 degrees or so to end the week.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32On into Saturday, that high pressure likely to

0:02:32 > 0:02:34establish itself across much of the country.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36The isobars easing out too,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39so a less windy spell of weather as we look towards the weekend.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Still probably a fair amount of cloud and temperatures

0:02:42 > 0:02:45a little bit more typical of the time of year, typically around 12.

0:02:45 > 0:02:46We could see 15 degrees or so

0:02:46 > 0:02:50perhaps in one or two sheltered spots.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Then looking beyond into next week,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55high pressure does look likely to be established across the country.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59But, most likely that it will be out towards the south-east and that

0:02:59 > 0:03:03will lead us to draw in this mild flow of south-westerly air.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06A less likely scenario is that high pressure drifts up

0:03:06 > 0:03:09towards Scandinavia and that would allow a colder feed

0:03:09 > 0:03:12of easterly air to head in across the UK.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14So a couple of different scenarios,

0:03:14 > 0:03:16but it does look like things will eventually quieten down.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20So a wintry start to the week ahead, and after that spell of wet

0:03:20 > 0:03:22and windy weather, things will start to turn milder

0:03:22 > 0:03:26and more settled as we look towards next week.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27So, eventually, a little bit

0:03:27 > 0:03:30of a taste of something more spring-like.
