0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hello there. Well, many of us are being battered

0:00:06 > 0:00:07by cold, wet and windy weather.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10A lot of us are crying out for some spring sunshine and a settled spell.

0:00:10 > 0:00:16Well, I have some optimism for you, on the horizon, it has to be said.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Southern parts of the UK over the next 24 hours or so

0:00:18 > 0:00:19are going to see a lot of rain

0:00:19 > 0:00:23and various computer models indicating a very wet spell

0:00:23 > 0:00:27during the course of Wednesday, but then look at that dry signal

0:00:27 > 0:00:30which extends for some 10 days ahead.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Further north across the country, it might take a little bit longer

0:00:33 > 0:00:36to settle down, so again we've run the various computer models.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40They are indicating some spells of rain over the next few days,

0:00:40 > 0:00:41the lines of blue here,

0:00:41 > 0:00:44but then again it's a dry signal for next week.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46I'll talk about the reasons

0:00:46 > 0:00:48why in a moment,

0:00:48 > 0:00:49but we've got to get there first

0:00:49 > 0:00:50and it's a very wet picture

0:00:50 > 0:00:52through Wednesday, particularly

0:00:52 > 0:00:53across the more central

0:00:53 > 0:00:54and eastern areas,

0:00:54 > 0:00:55some hill snow thrown in

0:00:55 > 0:00:56for good measure

0:00:56 > 0:00:58and a cold blustery wind as well.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00The best of the sunshine

0:01:00 > 0:01:02across the more western parts

0:01:02 > 0:01:03of the UK - nowhere is it

0:01:03 > 0:01:04particularly warm

0:01:04 > 0:01:06but where it stays wet all day long,

0:01:06 > 0:01:07the temperatures will struggle

0:01:07 > 0:01:08to get much higher than

0:01:08 > 0:01:09four or five degrees.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11The culprit, low pressure,

0:01:11 > 0:01:12just slipping away

0:01:12 > 0:01:14into the continent overnight

0:01:14 > 0:01:15and into Thursday,

0:01:15 > 0:01:17a more optimistic picture.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Some early rain across eastern counties,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21but a little ridge of high pressure

0:01:21 > 0:01:22building in for most places,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24so a lot of dry weather,

0:01:24 > 0:01:25lighter winds, more sunshine.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28It will feel rather more like early March.

0:01:28 > 0:01:29What happens next?

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Does the dry weather hold on?

0:01:31 > 0:01:32Well, for the many of us

0:01:32 > 0:01:33it does, as we look towards the end

0:01:33 > 0:01:35of this week with a ridge of high pressure

0:01:35 > 0:01:36building in, not for all,

0:01:36 > 0:01:37as I indicated earlier on,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40further pulses of rain across Northern Ireland

0:01:40 > 0:01:41and Scotland in particular,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43courtesy of these trailing weather fronts.

0:01:43 > 0:01:44So a bit of a north-west,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46south-east split on Friday.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47The best of the sunshine

0:01:47 > 0:01:49across more southern and eastern areas.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Temperatures, well, not as chilly

0:01:51 > 0:01:52as they have been.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54Some places getting up into double figures.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56As we look towards the weekend,

0:01:56 > 0:01:57even the fronts across

0:01:57 > 0:01:58the more north-western areas

0:01:58 > 0:02:00will tend to push away northwards

0:02:00 > 0:02:02and that high pressure

0:02:02 > 0:02:03beginning to assert itself

0:02:03 > 0:02:05across many parts of the country

0:02:05 > 0:02:08and as I mentioned, it won't be as cold as it has been.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Milder air filtering in off the Atlantic,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13most felt across the more western areas.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15That chilly air slow to lose

0:02:15 > 0:02:17its grip across south-eastern parts

0:02:17 > 0:02:19of England in particular.

0:02:19 > 0:02:20But this is the picture for Saturday.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Still some pulses of rain for a time

0:02:22 > 0:02:25across parts of western Scotland in particular,

0:02:25 > 0:02:26but a lot of dry weather

0:02:26 > 0:02:28and with some sunshine and lighter winds

0:02:28 > 0:02:29further south and east,

0:02:29 > 0:02:30it shouldn't feel too bad.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32And again on Sunday, a lot of dry weather,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34that high pressure pushing

0:02:34 > 0:02:35those fronts away northwards.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Cloud amounts will be quite variable

0:02:37 > 0:02:39across the country but hopefully

0:02:39 > 0:02:41we'll see some sunshine in many places,

0:02:41 > 0:02:42as you can see,

0:02:42 > 0:02:43up into double figures.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Now, through next week,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48it does look as if high pressure will stay in control.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51High pressure at ground level, with the winds

0:02:51 > 0:02:55circulating in a clockwise fashion, but it's not just at ground level,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58we think, where we're going to see high pressure dominating.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Further up through the atmosphere,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03we're also going to see a large area of high pressure

0:03:03 > 0:03:04plonked across the UK

0:03:04 > 0:03:07and when you've got high pressure at the surface

0:03:07 > 0:03:09and high pressure way up in the atmosphere,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13then that high pressure tends to be much more stubborn.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17It sticks around for much longer and brings a more prolonged dry spell.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19So, to sum up, through next week,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21a dry spell of weather which is going to last some time,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25hopefully some spring sunshine, but where the skies clear overnight,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28still the possibility of some chilly, and possibly

0:03:28 > 0:03:29frosty, mornings.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31I'll update you again tomorrow.
