0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. You don't need me to tell you that over the winter months

0:00:05 > 0:00:08the weather gave us a torrid ride with storm after storm,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10some significant flooding in places, and that sort of weather

0:00:10 > 0:00:13has continued into the first part of meteorological spring -

0:00:13 > 0:00:16these pictures just from last week from Weather Watchers

0:00:16 > 0:00:18across parts of central and eastern England,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20more flooding downpours.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23But the pictures coming in over the weekend have been much quieter,

0:00:23 > 0:00:26much more spring-like - there's the scene from West Yorkshire.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28So clearly something has changed in our weather,

0:00:28 > 0:00:31and the clues, as ever, can be found in the jet stream,

0:00:31 > 0:00:33that through much of the winter

0:00:33 > 0:00:35has been running right across the Atlantic,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37carrying storm after storm.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40It has been almost relentlessly wet and windy.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43But now, look at this. An area of high pressure has arrived.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45A blocking area of high pressure

0:00:45 > 0:00:48that's diverting rain-bearing weather systems to the north of us

0:00:48 > 0:00:51or around us and into the Mediterranean.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53So our weather this week predominantly settled.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55There'll be question marks about cloud amounts,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57temperatures under the cloud, frost and fog,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00but no significant weather systems coming our way,

0:01:00 > 0:01:03no significant rainfall on the horizon,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05and many people may say "long may it last".

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Let's look at things day by day

0:01:07 > 0:01:09because no two days are going to be the same.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12For Monday, England and Wales, early cloud clearing,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Scotland and Northern Ireland a sunnier day.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17We all have long sunny spells into the afternoon.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Still the chilly wind for parts of the east and south

0:01:19 > 0:01:22with single-figure temperatures, but warmest away from that breeze

0:01:22 > 0:01:25in western Scotland - 13, 14 Celsius.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27It will feel pleasantly warm.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Now if we look at the picture going into Tuesday,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32I'm hiding here in the Atlantic a deep area of low pressure,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34but we don't need to worry about that.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Remember I said this was a blocking high pressure -

0:01:36 > 0:01:39it's blocking these weather systems coming our way on the jet stream,

0:01:39 > 0:01:44they ride up over that area of high pressure so we stay settled.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47But again, no two days are the same, so Tuesday is cloudier,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49especially for England and Wales, and along this coastline here,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52north-east England, through Yorkshire, maybe East Anglia,

0:01:52 > 0:01:53risk of some sea fog moving in,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56and there may also be a little bit of drizzle in places as well,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59so not necessarily bone dry this week.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01The picture for Wednesday, a weather front close to the south.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04The only thing that's going to do is actually bring drier air

0:02:04 > 0:02:07to parts of southern England and South Wales

0:02:07 > 0:02:09which means sunnier conditions returning on Wednesday -

0:02:09 > 0:02:12still rather cloudy, eastern Scotland and north-east England

0:02:12 > 0:02:14still perhaps the chance of

0:02:14 > 0:02:16getting a little bit of drizzle in places.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19High pressure, then, still very much in control on Thursday,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22weather systems into the Mediterranean,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24an area of low pressure here so it will be wet,

0:02:24 > 0:02:25potentially stormy in places.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30But for us it's just a mixture of cloud, some sunny spells -

0:02:30 > 0:02:32if anything, that breeze down towards the south of the UK

0:02:32 > 0:02:35begins to ease a little bit and then right at the end of the week,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38still high pressure right across us.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41There may still be a touch of frost overnight

0:02:41 > 0:02:42if you're clear for any period of time.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Again, there could be some fog patches in places to start the day.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48It is likely throughout the week west is best, though,

0:02:48 > 0:02:50for the sunny spells.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Temperatures around 8 to 10 Celsius, as you can see, for Friday.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55And then going into next weekend,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58and it's the weekend of the spring equinox,

0:02:58 > 0:03:00which means after that the days get longer than the nights.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02We've got high pressure still around.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06There's a slim chance that it may start to break down

0:03:06 > 0:03:08with weather systems trying to come in from the west or east,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10but the preferred solution at the moment

0:03:10 > 0:03:12is for that high pressure for the weekend,

0:03:12 > 0:03:14even into the following week to still be close by,

0:03:14 > 0:03:16and that means again most places will be dry.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Some days sunnier, cloudier than others,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21still a risk of frost and perhaps some fog overnight.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23When that area of high pressure

0:03:23 > 0:03:26breaks down and clears and becomes more unsettled

0:03:26 > 0:03:28is the big question, and we'll follow that

0:03:28 > 0:03:29in these broadcasts this week.
