0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. High pressure in control and, for most of us, this dry

0:00:05 > 0:00:08spell of weather will last well into next week, but we will eventually

0:00:08 > 0:00:12start to see some changes, some subtle changes in the big picture.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14Right now, though, it's all about the small changes

0:00:14 > 0:00:16in where we see the cloud, because

0:00:16 > 0:00:18it does make such a difference, the sunshine at this time of year.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20We are close, of course, to the equinox.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23Beautiful day in Western Scotland. In the sunshine, 16 degrees.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26In Eastern England, in the gloom and the mist,

0:00:26 > 0:00:28it was just 5-6 Celsius.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32Now, we'll keep big contrasts with the weather over the next few days

0:00:32 > 0:00:36but the areas that we see the cloud and the sun, they will be varying.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Take Wednesday for example.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41A brighter feel eventually across the Midlands, Wales.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42Southern England brightening up, too.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Further North, there will be more cloud but I still fancy, with

0:00:45 > 0:00:48a bit of sunshine, parts of the Highlands could reach 16 Celsius.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Elsewhere, again, the East coast generally chilly,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53just 5-6 and quite gloomy.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56A bit of sunshine and other areas could reach 10-11 Celsius.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00There's the area of high pressure dominating things across the UK.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Only slowly starting to move.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Across the South, there will still be a brisk breeze on Thursday.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08If anything, here there should be a bit more sunshine.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Further North, it will be quite a cloudy day and, again,

0:01:11 > 0:01:14look at the temperatures. Responding to the sunshine, 10, 11, 12 Celsius.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Where it's gloomy, we're just at 6-7 degrees.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Now, the high-pressure still keeping the weather fronts at bay

0:01:20 > 0:01:21through Thursday and Friday

0:01:21 > 0:01:26but it is just very slowly wobbling its way into the Western Atlantic.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30A subtle shift bringing subtle changes in the wind direction,

0:01:30 > 0:01:32which has a big impact on where we see the cloud.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Brightest weather on Friday

0:01:34 > 0:01:37likely to be South Wales, South-west England.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Quite a lot of clouds and a brisk breeze on the East coast.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Again, where it's gloomy, we're only looking at 6-7 Celsius.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Now, the high continues to shift down towards

0:01:45 > 0:01:46Ireland during Saturday,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49which means the wind's coming around the top of that high,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51from a cool direction, from the North,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53and also bringing more moisture with them.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55So, again, a lot of cloud on Saturday.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Not much brightness and, as a result,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00temperatures just 6-7 Celsius.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03If we see some sunshine, we could get into double figures.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06The high is still with us on Sunday so, again, it is a largely dry theme

0:02:06 > 0:02:09but again, just subtly shifting a little further South,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12with a breeze coming round the top of that high bringing moisture

0:02:12 > 0:02:15from the Atlantic, it is going to be predominantly cloudy

0:02:15 > 0:02:16through this weekend.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19There will be some holes here and there and, with a bit of sun,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21we'll see temperatures jumping

0:02:21 > 0:02:24but, for most, it's grey and chilly at just 6-7 Celsius.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27But, for most, the winds will be light.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28So gradual changes between this week and next.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31At the moment we've got this blocking pattern.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34This is the jet stream, that fast-moving ribbon high up,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37driving to the North of the UK and meaning the low-pressure systems

0:02:37 > 0:02:41are largely in the Mediterranean or in the Atlantic, and allowing this

0:02:41 > 0:02:45big area of high pressure just to sit across us, keeping things dry.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Fast forward to next week, it's the same pattern.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50We've got that big loop in the jet stream,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53but it's all shifted a little bit further West.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55We call this retrogression.

0:02:55 > 0:02:56Now, one of the reasons for this

0:02:56 > 0:02:59is what's going on in the United States.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01We'll have more on that this time tomorrow.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04But, for the moment, we need to focus on the high pressure just

0:03:04 > 0:03:08shifting a little bit further, which will introduce more of a breeze,

0:03:08 > 0:03:13more isobars on the charts as we go into next week, and a continuation

0:03:13 > 0:03:16introducing more moisture, so the potential for a little bit of rain,

0:03:16 > 0:03:19particularly away from the high across the Northern parts of the UK.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22With the winds coming from the North-west, it'll stay chilly.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24There will be some showers, with the driest of the weather

0:03:24 > 0:03:28hanging on across the South and South-west. Goodbye.
