0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hello. Some would say, when high pressure's in charge across the UK,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08it's Easy Street for forecasters.

0:00:08 > 0:00:09Not necessarily true.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13Although high pressure means we don't have to worry about rain,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15cloud is always problematic.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18And it's particularly problematic at this time of year,

0:00:18 > 0:00:22close to the Equinox, when the sun makes such a difference to the day.

0:00:22 > 0:00:23That's what's been happening this week.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25High pressure has been dominating.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27We haven't had to worry about rain,

0:00:27 > 0:00:29but day on day variations have been huge.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Look at Monday, a largely sunny day

0:00:31 > 0:00:33on the satellite image. By Tuesday,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35the cloud is spilling back in from the East.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37By Wednesday, the cloud holes

0:00:37 > 0:00:39were all over the place, and yet by Thursday

0:00:39 > 0:00:42we were back to largely sunny conditions

0:00:42 > 0:00:44though it was pretty grey on some eastern coasts

0:00:44 > 0:00:45and then again on Friday,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48the cloud was back in from the East,

0:00:48 > 0:00:49leaving just western areas

0:00:49 > 0:00:51to bask in the spring sunshine.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53The cloud is going to continue

0:00:53 > 0:00:54to win out through the weekend.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Yes, we'll continue to see some holes,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58particularly across Scotland.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Sunshine in places here.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01But for most, it's cloudy.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03But it is still, under the influence

0:01:03 > 0:01:05of that high pressure, largely dry.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07A little drizzle's likely here and there.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09But again, temperatures really do

0:01:09 > 0:01:11depend on the sunshine.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13Where we see it, double figures or beyond.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14For most of us, with the cloud,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16we're just at 7 or 8 degrees.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Here's the high, continuing to slip

0:01:18 > 0:01:20further south as we go through the weekend.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23We're starting to see weather fronts topple in

0:01:23 > 0:01:25across the north getting closer,

0:01:25 > 0:01:26a sign of change.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28A few more showers in northern Scotland.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30But for most, it's dry and cloudy.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32We'll see more sunshine on Sunday

0:01:32 > 0:01:33across north-east England,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35eastern parts of Scotland.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Again, the sunshine will make a huge difference.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39This is the Azores high,

0:01:39 > 0:01:42it's slipping back to its default position

0:01:42 > 0:01:44over the Azores going into

0:01:44 > 0:01:45the early part of next week.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47But it will be a slow process.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50It's still controlling things on Monday,

0:01:50 > 0:01:51but again, a few more showers

0:01:51 > 0:01:53in western Scotland.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55With the breeze coming in more from the west,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58eastern areas should be more favoured for sunshine.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Tuesday again, a similar picture,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02though the winds become more from the south-west.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04But generally dry and cloudy

0:02:04 > 0:02:07for the first part of next week sums it up.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09By the time we get to Wednesday,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11the weather pattern looks more traditional,

0:02:11 > 0:02:12with these weather fronts

0:02:12 > 0:02:14trying to come in from the Atlantic.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16But there's big question marks

0:02:16 > 0:02:18about when we start to see a proper change.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21It's all tied in with the jetstream.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23For much of the week, we've had this pattern,

0:02:23 > 0:02:24this blocking pattern.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26The jetstream going to the north of the UK,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29high pressure sitting over us keeping things dry.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31The jetstream through the weekend,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33early part of next week, gets a bit of a kick

0:02:33 > 0:02:35and we get this more amplified pattern,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37where the jetstream goes further north

0:02:37 > 0:02:39and come south a little further west.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Hence why the high is starting to retreat.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45And things slowly changing a little through the early part of next week.

0:02:45 > 0:02:46If you think of the jetstream,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48that fast-moving ribbon high up,

0:02:48 > 0:02:49as a river, meandering,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52then the default position for that river,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56it always wants to go back to a more direct route,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59that's Mother Nature's way of keeping things simple.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01We will eventually go back to this jetstream

0:03:01 > 0:03:03coming more in from the Atlantic,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05providing more unsettled conditions.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07But with such a strong block,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10a strong pattern, it's difficult to say

0:03:10 > 0:03:14exactly when we'll get back to that more typical condition

0:03:14 > 0:03:16and the more unsettled weather.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18But it does look as if, through Easter weekend,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20it's likely to stay on the cool side

0:03:20 > 0:03:24and we'll start to see more of that change, turning more showery,

0:03:24 > 0:03:25particularly in the North,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27but still a fair bit of dry weather,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29at least for the first part of the weekend across the South.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Goodbye.
