0:00:03 > 0:00:04Thanks for joining me.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06It's time to get a check on the weather for the next week or so
0:00:06 > 0:00:08and the forecast hasn't actually changed,
0:00:08 > 0:00:09if you were watching yesterday.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12It will remain very unsettled for the rest of this week,
0:00:12 > 0:00:15further blustery showers on the way for tomorrow after what has been
0:00:15 > 0:00:17a brief spell of better weather
0:00:17 > 0:00:19during the course of Tuesday.
0:00:19 > 0:00:21The changes are already starting to take shape
0:00:21 > 0:00:23across the North Atlantic.
0:00:23 > 0:00:25These are showers here which are gathering.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28They are also coming in on a cold, north-westerly wind.
0:00:28 > 0:00:30That's going to be in place across the UK
0:00:30 > 0:00:31during the course of Wednesday,
0:00:31 > 0:00:33so a really chilly day on the way for some of us,
0:00:33 > 0:00:35particularly in those blustery showers.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38This is what it looks like through the course of tonight,
0:00:38 > 0:00:39so the weather front,
0:00:39 > 0:00:41which actually is the leading edge
0:00:41 > 0:00:44of this colder air coming in off the North Atlantic,
0:00:44 > 0:00:45you can see where it starts to rain
0:00:45 > 0:00:47across Northern Ireland, Scotland,
0:00:47 > 0:00:49even a bit of winteriness here.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52Does look as though it will stay dry all through the night
0:00:52 > 0:00:53across East Anglia and the south-east.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56Here's the morning - those winds keep on strengthening.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58In fact, they'll get stronger and stronger
0:00:58 > 0:01:00through the course of the day,
0:01:00 > 0:01:03up to gale-force and a real what we call rash of showers,
0:01:03 > 0:01:04so lots of them,
0:01:04 > 0:01:06hit and miss, on and off from hour to hour
0:01:06 > 0:01:08with sunshine in between.
0:01:08 > 0:01:09This is round about lunchtime -
0:01:09 > 0:01:11you can see a good chance
0:01:11 > 0:01:13of catching these showers across most of Scotland,
0:01:13 > 0:01:15plenty of them through the Lowlands,
0:01:15 > 0:01:17down into the south-west of Scotland,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19Northern Ireland catching quite a few here,
0:01:19 > 0:01:21into the north-west of England as well
0:01:21 > 0:01:24and one or two across parts of East Anglia and the south-east,
0:01:24 > 0:01:25at least at this stage.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28Notice fewer showers for Wales,
0:01:28 > 0:01:30the bulk of the Midlands
0:01:30 > 0:01:32and south-western parts of England,
0:01:32 > 0:01:33but I wouldn't be surprised
0:01:33 > 0:01:35if one or two of us get caught out
0:01:35 > 0:01:36in a heavier one even here.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39Temperatures will hover around 7 to 9 degrees but, of course,
0:01:39 > 0:01:40because it's a lot stronger,
0:01:40 > 0:01:42you don't need to be a meteorologist to figure out
0:01:42 > 0:01:45that it's certainly going to feel quite a bit colder,
0:01:45 > 0:01:47so perhaps the apparent temperature,
0:01:47 > 0:01:49the "feels like" temperature
0:01:49 > 0:01:51may be around 2 or 3 degrees above freezing.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53Thursday, copycat conditions for some of us.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56Still cold, north-westerly winds. If anything,
0:01:56 > 0:01:58it may actually be worse across the south of the country.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00There might be more cloud
0:02:00 > 0:02:02and more frequent spells of rain
0:02:02 > 0:02:04and again, it's going to feel pretty chilly
0:02:04 > 0:02:05in those strong winds.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08Come Friday, there's another weather front coming our way,
0:02:08 > 0:02:11further rain expected across western areas,
0:02:11 > 0:02:13initially reaching Northern Ireland,
0:02:13 > 0:02:14parts of Wales,
0:02:14 > 0:02:17down into the south-west early in the day, we think.
0:02:17 > 0:02:18Perhaps later in the afternoon,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21that rain will sweep across other parts of the country,
0:02:21 > 0:02:22so you're starting to get that message
0:02:22 > 0:02:25that it is going to be raining pretty much every day,
0:02:25 > 0:02:28but not everywhere for the rest of this week.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31And the weekend - low pressure parks itself across
0:02:31 > 0:02:32this portion of the country.
0:02:32 > 0:02:35Quite often, lows sweep in from west to east.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37This one is just going to meander
0:02:37 > 0:02:39across this part of the Atlantic
0:02:39 > 0:02:41and the UK and just keep sending
0:02:41 > 0:02:42weather fronts in our direction.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45One of the reasons why it's stuck across this part
0:02:45 > 0:02:47of the world is the shape of the jet stream
0:02:47 > 0:02:49and if you know your Greek alphabet,
0:02:49 > 0:02:51you might know the letter omega
0:02:51 > 0:02:53and this is exactly what we are seeing here,
0:02:53 > 0:02:54and omega shape to the jet stream.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57It actually looks a bit more like an octopus, to be honest,
0:02:57 > 0:03:00but the physics are such that when we get this sort of pattern,
0:03:00 > 0:03:01the atmosphere grinds to a halt
0:03:01 > 0:03:04and we don't get these weather systems moving
0:03:04 > 0:03:06so much from west to east.
0:03:06 > 0:03:07They kind of stay where they are,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09so this area of low pressure is going
0:03:09 > 0:03:11to hang around across this part of the Atlantic
0:03:11 > 0:03:13and the UK through the weekend into next week,
0:03:13 > 0:03:15which basically means the weather
0:03:15 > 0:03:17isn't going to change an awful lot.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20Rain showers to sunshine, back to rain showers again.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22And at night, when the sky is clear
0:03:22 > 0:03:23it is going to be pretty chilly,
0:03:23 > 0:03:26so the unsettled theme looks as though
0:03:26 > 0:03:28it is set to continue into next week
0:03:28 > 0:03:30and that's your omega block lesson.
